In any other year Buller would have groomed and made snow through May, hell they would have opened, and IMO it would have resulted in more snow on the snowmaking runs right now.

Would have been a good year to showcase just how effective snowmaking can be (with very little natural snow having fallen).

Not to mention the fact that the last super cold snap could have been a record snowmaking event with all the extra water available. Could have coated the joint.

If the depth doesn’t improve, it’ll probably be Buller’s worst season on record.

Worse than 2006. At least we really aren’t missing out on much. Next year can only get better.

    So far so bad.

42nd out of 42 seasons (natural). Monday was 41st, 1cm in front of 2001 but that didn't last long.

News just in, Got the generic email from management. Buller will contact me by September 1st regarding early bird season pass for next year and credit towards it. Can’t wait to get 99% credit towards next year cos I live in Melbourne and that’s the right thing to do, isn’t it Dave?

Buller's official cams page seems to not know the difference between snow and fog. The weather description at the top of the page states that it's currently a "Snowy" 2 degrees. Cams clearly show fog.

This has been what has consoled me this wretched "Season of No" for Melbournian skiers. Snow cover is the worst I've ever seen this time of year.

2003 was a good season. Didnt come until mid July, but once it did! Still a metre at the start of October

Yes Hotham BC was still good on Cup Weekend in 2003. But now we’re mid August I think the odds are really against a major recovery. Be great to be wrong! 2003 or 1991 recoveries looking unlikely but 50 cents next week would be nice for anyone actually allowed up the hill.

    Agree.

2003 recovery was on about the 21st-22nd of July, it’s near to a family member’s birthday which was spent in the dark at Buller due to the storm knocking out the power. I don’t really remember the circumstances of 1991 but it did come late and hard.*

2001 came around Aug 22nd and while it was a substantial dump, it was a one hit wonder and I’ve got some aerial pics of late Sept and the snow didn’t really last.

Sadly I think it will take a fair bit now to elevate this year beyond the 1982, 1988, 1993, 98/99 and 2006 certified stinkers.

*EDIT: I think you mean 1990.

1990 wasn't too shabby in July that year and had a great August before a lean September.
1991 progressively built up during the August, and then a cracking mid-Sept before it all melted very quickly in a stinking hot late-Sept/Oct.
1992 was lean until August 8, then several monumental blizzards into September and it stayed cold right through Spring. (Due to Pinatubo the year before)

I recall the Windy Corner building at Falls being virtually buried that September...

As of the time of that post, surely.

But this fall will elevate this season from the all-time stinkers like 1982, 1993 and 2006. If this is it, it might end up a one-hit wonder resembling 2001. But who knows what is to come!

    Yep 26cm is about right.
Skinned up Bourke St and Baldy at 9:30am in the driving mizzle. V wet - must have been a bit of westerly going on.
Skied down Wombat - a few tracks but some heavy fresh to be had.
Wiskey trail back in action. Skinned around and up standard. Standard skied out.
Wet turned to snow about 1/2 way up standard.
Wife was at LBS about 8am and already x3 groups there - gotta be early to get those tracks.
Another 20cm and we'll have a base to play on until 13 sept...

There have been some cases of pipes freezing and then properties flooding, because the
heating is off. If you have property that might be at risk you should have the water turned
off. Water damage due to pipes breaking (the flexible braided pipes have a bad record) is
    affecting insurance on mountain.

Buller has ‘no respect’ for the overall weather systems. So many fronts get wasted - makes one appreciate the good days!

Stirling is a magical wonderland. The longest run from summit back to TBJ, is spectacular. So much changing terrain in one run, and so long. Anyone have an idea on the maximum run length at stirling?

It’s roughly 5 km +/- But depends a little on one starting point.

For a downhill run, Bluff Spur is the only real option (as you know), Stirling has too many ups and flats to count. River Spur might count as ‘downhill’ but not groomed enough (at all) to be practical in my book.

it might be another 0.5 to 1km from the true Summit to Bluff hut so 5 could become about 5.5 - 6.0 km

About the longest groomed ‘downhill’ run in Vic. and would come very close to Thredbo’s longest - Top o’ Karelia to Valley Terminal?

Bluff Spur could be T- B by tomorrow at this rate?
