unrelated question- has anyone seen that run off the side of burnt hut called Little Downhill? off the trail map but signed... unlike many of the trail map runs. Old run? Where does it go?

Snow skied very well today with a few centimetres of fresh on top. No sun, but much better snow than last time I was up a couple of weeks ago, which was a dusting of manmade grain on sheet ice.

Tiny ice crystals fell most of the morning, interspersed with genuine flakes, and a few patches of sleet, so pretty damp conditions. I was grateful for the fresh coating of waterproofing on everything.

It wasn’t easy taking photos this morning as hands got damp very quickly, which made it difficult to put gloves back on!

The wind picked up from the south through the morning. While not a howling gale, it sure had a bite.

After lunch, the day grew colder, the wind picked up, goggles were constantly icing up so headed north for wind and ice protection. Ended up going down all the horsey-named runs through the trees a bunch of times, until my legs had had enough.

Plenty of obstacles and thin cover here, but loads of fun. Dirt patches showing through thin snow even on the groomed run here.

It began to snow properly by early afternoon, just magical!

I don’t think you can see the snowflakes well on my iPhone photos through the trees so I took a couple in the car park with a proper camera.

I’ll come back for seconds tomorrow.
Nice pics. Let me guess, Wombat Bowl area - Powder Keg or similar? ;)

A whiter shade of pale
Foggy and windy on the hill today. The snow was fairly wet and heavy going even at 8.15 this morning. BOM said the 60km/h winds would ease by dawn. They were tricking. It was windier than yesterday.

But YOLO and all that, so I hauled my sorry old backside out there and told it to have fun LOL

Being so cold yesterday, I layered up even more today. You know how you can’t fold a piece of paper in half more than 7 times (go on, try it!), well, my layers were so thick that my limbs felt like the 8th fold! But I did stay warm:D

Even had a couple of patches of sun when riding Horse Hill. I had to be quick that shot!

I began with a few runs down through the trees of Burnt Hut Spur* again, where it was clear and out of the wind. @snowgum those photos from yesterday are from this area.

It looked even prettier today than yesterday, with a coat of snow sticking in the branches. I’m a sucker for snow gum colours and textures.

Up Grimus which stopped several times, the last time was about 2 metres from the off ramp. So close!

When I was able to exit, I did it blind as the wind and mist conspired to coat my goggles completely in ice

Skied down to Family by Braille, then into the Wombat bowl. Several people at the top of Summit were clearly waiting for someone to go first so they could follow. I felt like the Pied Piper!

Wombat bowl was fun, a little obstacled and thin cover at the bottom ahead of the cat track, but out of the wind and pretty much all to myself.

Similar with Yurredla and Men’s areas. Wet snow makes me look like a better skier than icy snow does!

Back to Burnt Hut trees in the afternoon, the wind hadn’t eased. Riding the Burnt Hut* chair, I love the smell of Grimus in the westerlyLOL

*Burnt Hut. Always was, always will be.

The amount of non-skiers all over the run gives me the creeps! Why I tend to never ski Bourke St
Buller needs more of a closed system of gates on lower Bourke Street. More ‘safety officers’ too. Open slather on Bourke doesn’t work.

I note that when I was skiing LB St at 4:30 - heaps of kiddies and bunnies returning to base & showing off new ‘skills’ to the family, I was almost dodging as many non-skiers as skiers.

It’s really not an appropriate environment for walkers, site-see-ers and well-wishes.

Someone is going to get very banged up one day and those involved will be wondering why BSL & the RM didn’t get more proactive.

It’s not easy but they need to do much better - even get Bolshie with managing non-skiers.

Over to you Buller crew…

& the road from Spurs to Village. Almost wiped out a couple taking photos on the downside of the road (heading on to Tyrol). I came over the road and got a little airborne narrowly avoiding a couple completely out of view (Actually on the run). Lucky I landed just before them and was able to turn away, albeit covering them in snow.

By far the worst area is people walking across from the ski school to around ABOM area.

Someone will get killed or seriously injured, not if when.

Not sure if it’s worse this season but I’ve definitely noticed more punters walking outside of their usual habitat - over to up and around koflers and abom, over the Southside areas and yes, across the spurs track which is the worst.

Not good - I saw several walkers up fairly high - btwn the top Tati on of Tyrol and the Holden Chair.
I had to dodge several - they really weren’t planning to look for or (heaven forbid?) avoid skiers coming down the hill or crossing diagonally from Holden to Tyrol/Shakey Knees.

We could as @Dave Clark as tow there to whether there’s any plans in the pipeline to reduced walkers on the lifted area. Ironically, if I decided to go XC, directly up the middle of Bourke St, I’ve no doubt I’s soon be reminded I was contravening ski field regulations.

But walking or standing, perhaps taking pics of my loved ones mid pitch is fine and dandy. Very strange!

Last weekend there were a few guys walking around with a rather large speaker and an eski blasting out some tunes. Both looked very heavy. I saw them in the village and then outside the ski school.

I admire their dedication to providing quality tunes for the masses.

Do not underestimate the determination of people looking to capture that illusive instagrammable moment.

I have less problem with them doing ‘stuff’ in the village, although want to be trying to sleep wit them outside.

But up in the lifted area, especially the more crowded and the higher speed areas, walkers and skiers aren’t a god mix.

One can say let the walkers get injured, yarda…

But we know from road accidents, it’s not always the perpetrator that’s killed or badly injured.

A skier buying a ticket (expensive these days!) expects a certain environment for the buck.

Dodging other skiers / boarders, snowgums and infrastructure is one thing, walkers and revellers is another. My 2 cents. You don’t have litigious-crazy like the US, to crack down on unsafe behaviour.

It seems this is in the too-hard basket for authorities ATM. Perhaps it will take a major accident for them to act?

A for snow walkers, perhaps it’s time for Buller to have a dedicated winter walking track. Well-signposted and on village maps etc…

Mount St Gwinear (nar Baw Baw) has one and so does Lake Mtn. C’mon Buller what do you say?
Even Buffalo had/has them around Lake Catani and the Chalet.

I mean seriously though. This could only be by a skier/boarder not riding in control.

  • Know your ability and always stay in control and be able to stop and avoid other people or objects. It is your responsibility to stay in control on the ground and in the air.

They may be unexpected, but you should be able to stop or avoid any object below you on a run. But, but, but, sure...

Really, really?

What about with a person density of about 1 per 4sqm? Site see-ers stepping backwards into your path?
Young Skiers & boarders more focussed on Mum and Dad than themselves and other riders.

Yes you ski to the person density, but mistakes happen. Most of the skier/non skier interaction is preventable.

On Bourke st a high percentage of beginners may not be in control, and if they are hidden from view or step out in the path of a skier/boarder. Avoidance could be more dangerous for the rider if there are trees around.

Hearing that sightseers are on some of the runs mentioned earlier, it is frightening.

Possibly better promotion of where they can and can't go and more dedicated area's for the non skier/boarder and possibly promotion of Mt Sterling for the snow play may help improve the day tripper experience and make it safer...

Haha, that will upset the Sterling folk!

Thing is sightseers don't just want to see snow, if they did they would just go to Lake Mountain etc. They want to see snow WITH all the resort facilities eg. Chairlifts, restaurants, bars, coffee, etc.

I'm not a legal person but my uneducated guess is that it would be tricky to prohibit walkers from walking on ski runs. What's next? No stopping zones for skiers and boarders? You effectively create an obstacle by stopping on a run... So how's a walker different in that aspect...

Probably a bad time to put forward the concept of discouraging sightseers full stop..

If you’re a fair weather skier, today was your day. First time blue skies were above Buller this week.

Last night’s cold temperatures firmed up the wet and heavy snow into hardpack with just a dusting of powder and manmade on top. Misty cloud lifted early revealing a bright blue skywith an occasional puffy cloud floating though. It only got sunnier as the day progressed which provided views to Hotham and Falls Creek.

Guns were going on Howqua well into the morning. Antarctic wind early on, died down by lunchtime for a clear, calm and stunning afternoon

Uni games saw the hill fairly busy first up but by mid-morning, students were at koflers and wombat hut replenishing energy, which I think must have taken all day as runs were clear and quiet, straight onto lifts, even Wombat.

The lower half of Wombat softened just a little by early afternoon, as did other southerly aspects. Wombat bowl stayed pretty icy though, but clear enough today for pictures. Here’s your snowgums @snowgum. The cover isn’t bad at all here, but a few rocks lurking just below the surface.

A small flock of Black Cockatoos flew over and behind me on the wombat chair. I managed to snap the last three stragglers.

Later afternoon, Shakey Knees was getting heavy and chopped up, the tree trails are thin but you can pick your way through if you pick the right trails.

Fantastic photos! Thanks for sharing. Is there any chance that someone could point out what the different mountains are for the untrained eye? I’ve often wondered what’s what when staring out across the ranges!

Same here! I always wondered if I can see Hotham from Buller, and which direction should I be looking at.

Based on @Timmossy and @CarveMan comments, I guess this zoomed in picture is Hotham. I could be totally wrong though!
