We drove in this morning. Took me all of one minute, probably less, to fill in details for our car load. Will be great when the online system is up and running but really wasn't that bad. It's always the car in front of you that's gonna slow you down as they fumble around and drop the pen between the seats...

Re the total ban on tobogganing in the resort
Legally are the RMB able to stop you from finding a patch a snow away from the snowplay areas and having a slide? I've never copped any grief when hiking closed areas in the past. Generally ski patrol will come and chat and ask about the conditions.
I understand the RMB have closed snowplay as it would be impossible to police as far as covid restrictions, which is fair enough. The toboggan areas at peak times are absolute chaos.

What ramifications are there for skiing or tobogganing within resort boundaries but not on open runs? Has anyone had any first hand experience of getting into "trouble" for off piste closed areas or is it just a request to stop? My understanding is the RMB doesn't actually have the legal power to do anything about it but that's all word of mouth.

I've got no interest in being a wanker about it but if I can take the kids for a sneaky slide away from the crowds then it would make the trip worthwhile.

I can't speak for powers, but my experience with ski patrol is overly positive. If something is closed, it's usually been to stop punters from getting lost or stuck - classic example is southside bowl if only bull run is running. They're more than happy whenever I've asked, provided you know where to go.
Goes both ways too - common sense if something is closed for av danger, regardless of how rare it is, stay away.

Obviously doesn't apply to tobogganing in the village though, no clue on that front.

    I haven't seen a toboggan all week.

You can ski anywhere, its public land, provided you don't do something that would endanger safety or try to get a lift from a running lift (eg trying to get a ride from bottom of Tirol when it's only technically open from midstation).

Tobogganing is banned in technicality, but I'd imagine it's more a deterrence for people who come just for snowplay, rather than those here to ski.

Yeah this was my understanding. Just wanted to make sure it was correct.
As stated I'm planning on being well away the village and others
    Thanks

You will very much struggle to hire a toboggan (if you don't own). You won't get a hire on the mountain.

Isn’t resort at capacity most days ? This would make anyone driving up to snow play potentially turned away at the gate or unable to purchase resort entry online?
I’ve ski toured around Buller on some epic early season days on closed runs and never had a problem, I’d say the same as others if you look like you know what you are doing and not being a dick you are fine.
This may change in the future with more people starting to get into it.

Yeah I've got my own gear. They aren't renting them out. I'll be hiking runs regardless but would be good to give the groms something to do

I've got entry but lift passes were never even released due to season pass holders. Don't see how they can turn us away. As I said I'll be boarding but it won't be on bourke st

Getting a bit edgey for our pre-booked 5 day on the mountain stay for July 26th-30th now with Mrs Bunns 10 day outlook up to July14th for Buller. Lift tix are open now for purchase but obviously with reduced capacity and not much snow coverage atm and not much prospect of much snow before the 13th July - it's a bit of a lotto on whether to buy tix atm or not with a two week window of unknowns weather wise. Have never really had to look into the snow guarantee thingy on the MB website and what it entails for a stay in the last week of July for the last 5 years or so. We've always had 30-70 cents to play on for the last week of July for the last 5 years or so. Probably need another 7 days or so to make a call on it but not sure if we have that time due to limited capacity of lift tix - what to do...........

It'll be interesting to see what they do for people who have booked for a period in the next 6 weeks but can't get there. Accom and lift tickets could be down the drain.

There is a whisper via an email sent out today via a certain snow resort management organisation that Hotham and Falls are most likely to close within 48-72 hours but no mention of Buller - if Buller could manage to stay open for say regional Victoria and local shires then it's continued operation is likely to have far less competition with other resorts / mountains closed. Fridays announcement will be interesting to see which way it falls.........

It’s not a whisper, it’s official, Falls / Hotham closed until Aug 19th.

Nothing official from Buller but have heard from a couple of places I trust that they will soldier on.

I just cancelled my Epic pass and would be looking at Buller if they stay open. Don't know how many others would be in the same boat.

You would hope one major resort remaining open in Vic would be economically viable (even if it's borderline)

I imagine they've looked at everything , but if I was Mt Buller I’d be working out an offering for an early bird season pass for 2021 that starts end of these school holidays. Perhaps an extra $100/$200 or so for the extra six weeks. People who already have a pass have one clearly, so that revenue won’t be cannibalised and they would just repurchase come September if intended, so no loss there.

Anyone outside greater Melbourne who has had their epic pass refunded would be highly likely to snatch one up, and quite probably others who otherwise would not have otherwise spent their $$ at Buller may well do so as well. It would get a not insignificant injection of cash in the bank pretty quickly, sure up some additional market share for next season, and with people spreading their risk over next season as well I’d expect they would be more comfortable parting with their $$ given ongoing uncertainty this season.

Whilst a very different set of circumstances, it reminds me of when Ruapehu cut its season passes to $299 from $1000+ or whatever it was, so as to really drive activity on the mountain after 2 eruptions and 3 lean snow years. Ie, when they needed to get the mountain being used more than it was, and needed some $$ in the bank... For a bit context an article below

Have you thought about the staged restrictions that will be in force again when we come out the other side? Hardly going straight to increasing capacity

Understanding is that many were very positive to staying open for the snow community and the region. There is enormous risk to making this tough decision and I have to applaud all involved for doing so.

Lots of thinking at accommodation, hospitality and retail businesses now!

Kudos to BSL and all involved. I get that it is hard on many levels - and things could change down the track but this means a lot to many people.
Let's hope that the weather cooperates in the coming weeks and Buller can make the most of it during the lock down and afterwards....:skier:

“This year has been incredibly tough on our community through fires and coronavirus (COVID-19) but we remain committed and determined in the face of this latest challenge to support the local people and those in our region who rely on tourism,” she said in a joint statement”

I seriously take my hat off to Buller! it’s nice to see a business putting the people and smaller business first!

If I am ever tempted south of the border it will be to Buller! I hope Victorians remember this and vote with their feet!

Downside is if it snows then the demand on Buller could increase with Hoth and Falls shut leaving less chance of getting in some days for those of us who are regular Buller skiers.

There’s lots of little things that a family owned business will do better than a big corporate, another example is that the SIA organised cheap season passes for all ski retail workers. When Vail took over Falls & Hotham they got canned, but Buller still has them. It’s not much but definitely a perk for me and my staff that we can experience a resort for less outlay and pass on our knowledge to our customers.

After the 6 weeks is up, being mid August and more chance of snow than in the next few weeks.
And while Hotham says it only shut for 6 weeks I cant see how they will pull staff out of thin air even if they do open again.

I think it’s more probable than it will be more than 6 weeks, than not.

I am definitely bracing for the end of my season on Sunday. September skiing at this point will be a bonus the way we are headed.

Realistically Buller will need to deal with a very similar situation, they will be operating with a super skeleton staff so a big ramp-up required when Melbourne’s restrictions end.

Unfortunately they wouldn't have qualified for JobKeeper. $750 per week for seasonal staff would have completely changed the economics of mountain ops.

Gotta say I'm a Hotham skiier but I'm definitely in the boat now of wanting to give my regional VIC dollars to Buller since they've made the big call to stay open. I'd definitely be looking at a refund of Epic pass and to spend those dollars on Buller while I can.
