Webcam is stuck on last week:O Im gonna guess theres about the same amount of snow as ben lomond atm unless anyone else here is in the know?
the web cam was taken down for maintence two weeks ago, apparently the timing was out. haven't heard when it will be back up.
gonna head up Monday.. hope i can get some turns in at the very least the hike up will be good for fitness
heres mawson on sunday thanks to 'Maswon' for this pic, looks like mt wellington is a bit decieving. Youdy do you have any more photos from today
Camera is broken atm I didnt get up there to around 5pm... So I didn't make it to the top of mawson or to rodway unfortunately Too cloudy so I couldn't see far at all had to walk back down in the dark...gee it was pretty though! snow covered trees and heaps of wildlife out Road up has a 5-10cm base! 15-20+ up higher kinda seemed like a cat track its packed down pretty well It started to snow again around 5:30 im thinking another 5cm+ will drop My car had 1 or 2cm when i left(around 6:15) and that was at the carpark This wednesday ill take snowshoes and go for a trek way out the back..hopefully snow stays there!
hope it dumps some more, i got days off coming soon would be nice to have the camera back to know what's going down
I went snowboarding up at MT Wellington yesterday!! not much but enough to build a jump and have some fun!! bring on the snow!!
where could you go on mount wellington even just to build a jump there is no real area unless down near springs but thats way to low to get proper coverage isn't it?
About 10 mins walk to the left of the tall tower there is a area that holds the snow and doesn't have to many rocks. The run is about 50m long just enough for a couple of kickers and there is a good rail that some kind person has placed over there!! you wouldn't really want it to much longer anyway cause you have to walk it!! there is some good little drops up there too you just gotta look around! and sometime you just don't have the time to make the drive up the field or ben!
Went up to mt field today!!! had heaps of fun! the run back down to lake dobson at the end of the day was the best with about 10cm on the track the whole way to the bottom!! It's really packed down as well so you can get some good speed up!! Up top still needs a little more to fill in around those rocks, but there was enough to make a nice kicker and the picnic table was good for a jib!!
http://social.ski.com.au/_Mt-Field-late-October-2008/photo/4510977/39473.html?enlarge=true Here is a shot taken from wombat flats on the drive out!! you can even see our fresh tracks and this was taken after all other aus resorts had closed!!
Sweet, now all we need is a good dump in August, cause that's when the man has given me time for good behaviour.
road has been reduced to 0-5cm with big brown patches!... up top its solid 0-15cm lots of rocks sticking out everywhere and brown patches needs another 15-20cm snow to be skiable
Thanks for the update Youdy, was thinking of heading up Saturday for a look but looks like I won't bother until we get some more snow (next week, following a bit of rain by the looks of it)
went up today. pretty sparse; i reckon mawson needs minimum 20 cm (probably more) before the tows can run. there's a fun, but ridiculously short run (less than 50 metres) just right from the top of mawson if you're desperate. photos (sorry about non-embeddable format) run at top of mawson: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=3005043&l=e4e6a45f73&id=683948972 mawson webcam replacement: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=3005292&l=7cb8f9098c&id=683948972 rodway (forget about it unless we get a metre): http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=3005047&l=e643895067&id=683948972
doesnt look promising paulmcc. apparently the fixed cam went up today so hopefully well have some live photos when it does snow
Why isnt Mawson the main ski resort in Tassie? It seems to have more consistant snow! Not that I have been skiing/boarding for enough years to fully know how the seasons go but the ones I have watched over the last few years it seems to get snow earlier and hold onto it for longer! by the looks of the cam if there were to be a commercial lift company there then we'd be skiing there by now?? Im hanging to get down there for a weekend this year! How do I find out when they open the tows there?
sorry to disappoint you white walls that photo was taken over 2 weeks ago and posted. i think the moderators think its better to look at that than the out of order screen while the cam is getting fixed
haha really? I thought the cam was running again. haha I just looked at the cam and put it next to your photo! So is there any snow up there now then? or has it been suffering the same fate as the ben?
Yea WW i'd say it would be in just as bad shape as Ben. If its cold enough it often gets bigger dumps than ben particularly when its coming from the W/SW. Its lower than ben so doesn;t hold as well but she provides a few nice suprises every now an then. Maybe youself, me and gooru boarder should hit it up some time?
yeah nomad I thought it would have suffered! See how long it hung on last year? it was the last ski field in Aus with snow! hope it does it again this year! Well gooru boarder is always up for a trip so you and I will have to get organised and trek down! I'll be keen!
Can someone please explain how to embed a photo in a post? Got a great photo of rodway going back a few years.
Make a photobucket account, upload the photo's, then copy the html link or whatever it gives you for the photo and paste it into your post.
Cheers Maxcimus, I'm not a total ludite but not far off. http://i918.photobucket.com/albums/ad30/tommo79/Rodwayropetow.jpg Not the best photo actually, but it may have been the last time rodway was operated. It is a shame mt field hasn't had more support, there used to be a commercial operater up there until several years (4?) ago, Tony Butcher, with hire gear and hot food to buy. Field always gets more snow (from SW) than the poor old ben, whose obscure and infrequent weather requirements (NE wrap around)for snow are met less and less these days. When was the last decent season at the ben? 1996? 2001? Not been a great one for a while. And by great one I mean wallabies found frozen solid at the base of the ladder and a channel 5 feet deep cut into the snow to allow t-bars to traverse summit. Moonlight ridge is place well worth a walk in winter if you're got a few days up your sleeve.
This was taken this morning around 8am!! not much up there so i decided to drive up to mt rufus for a sniff and started walking up to gingerbread hut but the weather got there first and i had to turn back but by the looks of it mt rufus is the spot!!!
http://social.ski.com.au/_Mt-Field-23-july-09/photo/4628631/39473.html?enlarge=true Link above is for todays pic of mt field!! we didn't get to much snow last night only 2cm really!! everything was pretty much frozen solid and it was really cold, the road was ice!! but still not enough snow to ride
Hey lads, Me and a few friends went for a raz up there on sunday, not really anything to see. We had to walk right to the peak to find a 50m x 50m patch of snow. Wasnt much, but it was enough to play around on and still hurt our selves setting up toboggan jumps! Ha.
does anyone have any idea what is happening with the camera. would be nice to see what was actually happening up there
ah apparently the camera did go back up but there were more problems, with the phone line or some thing, and its been brought back down again
