actually... given that i'm slightly hungover and it is blowing a gale at sea level, i think i'll leave it til later in the week <img src="https://www.ski.com.au/xf/styles/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="\:\/" title="smirk" height="15" width="15" />
oh well, you'll keep. certain celebrations seemed to be more attractive than going on a 2hr mission for nothing. anyhow, i think the team would've been smart enough to realize how crap it would of been up there today. i'll be up there later in the week now that we actually have snow on the way... then i'll take one for the team
If you play the Mawson Cam images over the last few days, you get this bizarre picture of a messy room. Weird!
went up yesterday... A is for average <img src="https://www.ski.com.au/xf/styles/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="\:\/" title="smirk" height="15" width="15" /> there was a couple of short runs at the top of the mawson tow and one about half way down. worth taking your rock hopper if you have one. i took a couple of pix, will try and up load them later.
Had a trip to Mt Field West this weekend. The total walking time was about 8 hours and only 3 hours were on snow with snow shoes. (mainly along the top of the Rodway Range) The condition of the snow was very poor and melting quickly.
Going on the pic on the cam, there is plenty there. The notice board at Skigia reckoned that the cover is moderate at both Mt Field and Ben and that the tows at Field might be running this weekend. Hopefully the weather will ease to allow for some action to finally occur. Am heading up north to Ben on Saturday though, but will be interested to see what it is like at Field, and especially if someone could post some pics. According to the BOM sites, the weather is likely to ease up next week sometime, so hopefully heaps of snow Well done Hughey.
have a friend heading there today hopefully he gets some pics and if does will post them. 30cm at wombats on report this morning should almost be double that on top
i recon mawson will have more snow than ben this weekend. might make the trip sunday. it would be great if we could get some clearer pictures from mt field CP
Either way at Mawson or Ben it should be Ace. Just need the clouds to lift a little and for the winds to die down. Yeah reckon if 30cm on Wombats there should be sufficient up top, plus for a fang down the jeep track.
Heard there has been substantial snowfalls at Mawson, Parks have called in a Bulldozer to clear the road, the Grader couldn't cope, anecdotally up to 1m fresh at Lake Dobson.
Hi all I'd like to firstly say thanx to the person responsible for the Cam being fixed up - Good Job! "The fat lady took the stage... only to have Hughey pull the lever and watch her fall down a giant trap-door!" Kekeke Looks like we have two weeks worth, even if no more snow drops in to visit next week... It's going to be a heavy walk up, but Not going to miss perhaps the only chances. My calibrated cam analysis says that we will have 807.6mm average depth on the centre run which will pack right down to 405.9mm by the end of the weekend, any more next week and we should have Mawson runs all over the place
--> Beeper "Parks have called in a Bulldozer to clear the road, the Grader couldn't cope," Not to worry, I'm sure CP will be able to tow everyone up to the carpark with his super powers. "By the powers of Hughey!! MUSH!" Don't forget to bring some replacement snow skins CP
wish i had the time to get down there......hopefully will have some pics to post tonight. A friend of mine trying his luck again today, so hopefully he gets up. it feels rather warm here in launceston today.........
I hope they haven't taken the Bulldozer from the Ben.....we need him up there to keep the lifts runing....plus, he doesn't like moving snow
So is all the info you get from parks CP ? Or do you work for ASIO and have real-time satellite imagery... I plan on a Sunday trip up to Mawson, I've got chains, but if a grader couldn't make it up then might have to use a giant trained snow mole and make a tunnel....
yep im with asio for sure......wtf lol. I havent even talked to parks but to a friend of mine who is a mawson regular who keeps my informed thats all.
Been waiting here for a few hours. Road is still closed and not looking promissing. A lot of keen people walking to the top though. 30 more minutes and I'm leaving ;(
mmm mawson today that was interesting, the road had alot of fresh snow on it i made it to the start of wombat moor in a two wheel drive with chains, from what i hear alot of others werent so lucky and got turned around. i had to walk from there to the top but it was well worth it. weather was a bit nasty but the nice clear moments, near empty slopes, and abundance of fresh snow was well worth it. next weekend should be great!!!!! when i left the road had been relatively cleared but the grading job wasnt that great. http://social.ski.com.au/_Mawson-sunday-30th-aug/photo/5054982/39473.html http://social.ski.com.au/_road-to-lake-dobson/photo/5054980/39473.html
lucky you. sweet pics. was going to upload pic of snow that i got to see but it was too depressing (compared to the bliss at the pinnacle). Cannot wait till next week!!
well i drove up today.. nearly made it to the ski car park before getting stuck in snow pretty disappointing conditions would have been great despite the wind tomorrow should be really good hopefully wind stays down will take some pics
really good snow! noone else on the mountain but too much wind for me to hike over the back of rodway... + having to walk an extra 2km since the road wasnt cleared was nice.... must be 2m-3m of snow in some places around mawson some nice powder in trees. made me think i was in japan again hike up was pretty rough low down there was 30-60cm of pow was pretty much whiteout on top...couldnt get any good pix anyone keen for snowshoe action sunday/monday?
<where i had to park my car 2km from the ski car park mawson shelter the chute there looks tempting... just getting out of it would be a bit rough
The frustrating vagaries of the Tasmanian maritime climate!! Was on back on the island for three weeks in August & have seen more snow in every Jan & Feb I've been there!! Walked out to K-Col hut on the 20th August in shorts & t-shirt, while pleasant, not what one wants in mid-winter. Saw the big low with deep southern fetch coming in my last week down there, new that literally the day after I left, a proper winter dumping would begin!!
Finally checked out Mt Mawson today. Heaps of snow but choppy surface. Still worth the visit though. Make the most of the snow. Will be checking out Ben Lomond tomorrow for a comparison.
Is that a decent dumping i see on the Mawson Cam? Looks like enough to run to run the tows if it wasn't for the fact there's no base. This could be the start of a decent base.....maybe....
