The whisper from the mountain is that this starts this week, mostly on the Mawson run. Watch the webcam and see the excavator in action. http://ski.com.au/snowcams/australia/tas/mawson1.html
It's be great to observe the machine heaping up dirt and spreading it around over the past day or so. Thanks in advance to the STSA and even PWS (I will never call them obstructionist again, well... not as much, anyway).
I thought you guys were greenies down in tassy - imagine getting permission to move a bit or dirt and a few rocks so it makes it better for skiers
I would be nice to see a set of before, during and after photos however its a bit hard when they keep covering the camera while they are working.
greg - go to this page: http://ski.com.au/snowcams/australia/tas/mawson1.html Below the image click 48 hr or 1 month history. Gives a good comparison.
I look after the Mawson cam and when it uploads an image it uploads a copy to a history folder. It has every image since the cam has been operating. During the rock works I had the cam set to 15 minute (not hourly) updates so there are quite a few images. I have no idea who was covering the cam up whilst laying down the mesh over the last couple of days, but if everything is above board, which I understand it is, then why attempt to cover it up?
Any chance of ski.com adding the other Mt Mawson cam to it's snow cam gallery? http://www.stsa.webbed.com.au/summitcam.html
It's here, isn't it? I asked them to link this up last year... http://ski.com.au/snowcams/australia/tas/mtmawson-summit.html
Whoops, so it is. It wasn't there last time I checked. Eeehan, thanks for all the work you and the rest of STSA people do at the last Australian club field open to the public. If the Rodway Tow opens this year, I will jump on a plane and part with my $30 for a day ticket. I've always wanted to ski Australia's steepest ski lift, but I've missed out on my visits so far.
Cheers Mate. Actually Rodways was last open two years ago. That was my first time on Rodways too. I must admit, whilst I was up to the challenge of being pulled up that steep slope, the slope down was just a bit too steep for me and my snowboard to confidently cope with... so I went back to Mawson
Does anyone have any info on how extensive the work is planned to be? Great to see some improvements up there.
Yeah would be nice to know, seem a little silly only grooming that little bit at the bottom. Theres still a tree and big rocks just above the bit they groomed, with the diminishing amount of snow we are getting each year you need all the open ground you can get. (for some reason i can't quote a post in this topic, the function works fine in other topics)
My understanding is that the only reason the pile of rocks at the base of Mawson was permitted to be moved was because this pile of rocks was put there as result of slope clearing in the 1950s/60s and is therefore not a part of the original natural environment. Whilst I haven't been up the hill since the works have taken place, I heard that the rocks were moved to the bottom of Mawson Tow (not in view of the camera) to form a retaining wall, and together with some earth works to flatten the area out, it will create a much better loading point at the bottom of Mawson Tow. I don't believe that any further works will be taking place on any of the other slopes.
I can remember the one time I got to go on Rodway. There was a bit of a dip from the loadinging point before you hit the slope proper. I was airborne hanging onto the tow line.
