I’m considering heading from Queensland to the north island of NZ in the second last week of September to have a few days of skiing on Mt Ruapehu instead of mid August days at Thredbo/Perisher etc. These September dates won’t be in the NZ school holidays I believe.
Given things are still up in the air with travel to both locations I’m wondering if it is important to pre book accomodation at Mt Ruapehu for these dates? Or should it be easy to find somewhere to stay on the fly? I would like to stay flexible because I believe weather (wind) can be a factor at Ruapehu.
    Thanks in advance.

There are relatively few accommodation options for Ruapehu, so I'd book, but maybe look for something with workable cancellation policy first. My experience last year was accom was expensive.

I had no trouble getting into Chateau Tongariro just after the NZ school holidays in 2018. It's a bit expensive by NZ standards, but not by Australian standards and an experience in itself - like stepping back into an elegant hotel in the 1920s.

Off the top of my head I can think of 30 places or so in Ohakune. All prices .
Much better spot to stay at than Chateau/Skotel or National Park.
Turoa is a better hill in my opinion.
I put Ohakune as the third biggest ski town in NZ.

Thanks. I have no problems with booking ahead generally but just worried that the border will still be shut. If the weather is nasty and lifts are shut I’m sure we’ll find something to do as we’ll have a car.

Care to comment on the quality of the skiing? Third week of September should still be fine I assume given the extra elevation over most other Oz/NZ hills?

We were there second week of October, and it was a little sticky, but good cover everywhere.

In most years, Spring skiing is the best time at Ruapehu. Some years, they still have lifts running in December.

Great, but different. Big Mtn. Different snow to Aus. Lots of ice, ice layers in the snow, ice pebbles in the snow. And I'm talking blue ice, not crumbly snow chunks. But not boilerplate.

Be careful if whiteouty and you are out wide - SFA to navigate by.

    Addictive, very.

Lots of cliffs too if ya like bombing.

But give yourself plenty of time, expect 20-30% closed days due to weather. Anything less is a bonus.

We ate in the fancy dining room once, but ate at the pub across the road the rest of the time, which was pretty good (actually the best wedges ever).

We stayed at the Hydro Majestic this past weekend. Those cool old places are something else. And yep, the fine dining is expensive, but what price on romance? Fun memories linger longer than the wallet pain.

Such a cool building. There's so much crap built over the years (hello Jindabyne), ti's nice to see something postcard-worthy in holiday spots.

The other cool thing is, if you walk out onto the front terrace, you are looking straight at Mount Doom (Lord of the Rings).

I'd second this. I'd book somewhere in Ohakune where you can cancel if you need. There are some great Holiday Home/bach options in Ohakune as well.

It's an amazing mountain (when the sun comes out) but beware closed days are very common.

This year sadly not all lifts will be running on either field due to COVID-19.

We stayed 4 years 2011 - 2014 at the Powderhorn, Ohakune and highly recommend it.

Here is our 2014 report with a link to 2013 too:
    https://www.ski.com.au/xf/threads/our-2014-trip-to-mt-ruapehu.67992/

The system apparently ate our reports for 2012 & 2011.
