We are heading up to Mt. Stirling on May 20-22nd 2017 to do a hike over to Lake Cobbler and back . It might snow which would be nice.

I was impressed by the new hut at Howqua Gap. The Razorback hut at Mt. Stirling is quite a hut complex too. I am looking forward to July at Mt. Stirling. I wonder how much longer it would take to snow shoe from TBJ to the summit area via either River Spur track or the Howqua Gap Track ?
Late in May is very quiet up there. Even Craig's hut was relatively quiet with no army of 4 WD bogans or anything like that.

You're adding approximately 7km over the way up the Bluff Spur track by going to Howqua Gap first, though on a clear day, the views off the upper part of the Howqua Gap track might be worth it.

......And there are nice secluded camping sites on the upper part of Howqua Gap track.

Returning via the Howqua Gap track has appeal.I went out to Craig's hut and back from The Bluff spur hut in full snow cover last winter. I saw NOBODY out there. It was spooky.

I day tripped up to Buller and Stirling today. I didn't go beyond the circuit road, but Stirling is certainly looking nice.

I would wait until another big dump of snow. Even the upper slopes of Mt FT are looking patchy now and I was on the summit of Mt FT on Monday June 5th 2017 at dawn.

@Mister Tee on snow shoes Does this apply to the eastern facing aspects? I'd think that they should be better off than other faces. Desperately trying to avoid resort skiing this weekend.

The Eastern slopes of Mt. F.T. have too many exposed hazards for safe skiing or snow boarding at present and the cover is icy, patchy and melting. Crampons/Microspikes rather than snow shoes were my plan of attack on the summit at day break . Avalanche gully needs more snow cover for the game to be on. The vaunted winter snow cornice on the Eastern facing summit ridge has not begun to manifest itself clearly. We need more snow. However I saw a photo of Fitzgerald's hut today as it looks now and there is by the look of the current cover enough to XC ski on out near Marum Point . The Summit area of Mt. Bogong would be the best bet, but what with these frosty clear nights my guess would be the snow cover would be icy boiler plate and not much chop for carving any lines on it in skis.
From the top of Mt. F.T. ,I could see the BHP incl. the Fainters, Mt . Hotham and Mt Bogong all have/had some snow cover. The Razorback is a no go . High Knob is still brown!!. ( That is not an "Are you being served" type gag ;-P).In the distance Mt Howitt and Mt Buller had some snow on the top but one doubts it is anything substantial at this early juncture. IMO July is when Mt. Stirling starts kicking goals .

Was up there y'day, 20-30cm at the top, zilch at the car park. Enough snow for a bit of a cruise on the trails higher up but not deep enough in Stanleys / Dugout yet. If you want to get into the bowls the bushes are just covered but when you attempt to go for a turn you just break through into them snagging a rock on the way.

Thanks for the report. I'm considering heading up tomorrow while I have the chance. Is there enough snow to make it worthwhile, and from what point is the snow skiable? Cheers.

Dear Mt. Stirling .I am sorry but you are not delivering the goods in a timely and reliable way and I am going to have to go and get my B.C. snow fix elsewhere very soon. Please don't take it so hard. You know it has not been working out lately so it is best to be honest about this. I usually go to see you twice in July every year but that other mountain , the one with the pointy top , Mt. FeatherTop is going to deliver the goods if nowhere else does and despite the slog on foot to get up there, it is free to access and wild.

If you're looking for the first slide of the season then it will be worth it. It's about a 2km walk up Bluff Spur before you can clip you're skis on, from there you'll be able go all the way around to cricket pitch and a bit beyond before you'll have to unclip. With the showers on Merrijig today I'd assume there will be a bit of fresh too. Just don't go with the expectation of being able to get off the trails up top and putting some solid turns in without hitting a few rocks.

Thanks for that. Unfortunately I crashed my MTB today and still in a bit of pain. So I'll be resting up instead. Hopefully by next week I'll be healed and with any luck more snow will have fallen up there.

I spoke to a ranger today. He said they were skidoo grooming upper trails today. There's a few holes in usual places.

Also said we can roughly ski above green signs but obviously can dodge any rocks easier up than down so you'd be a bit careful (slow) on the wAy down).

As a btw; I'm thinking of heading up Wednesday - should be of the week and seemingly the 'best' day ova very, ordinary start to season if you want a xc day trip from Melbourne.

Might see some of you up there!

(Sorry to hear about the stack/injury Stridercdh!)

Hi all, I'm planning a day trip up to Stirling either Wed 25th or Thurs 26th of July, depending on conditions and commitments. I was wondering if anyone would be interesting in perhaps meeting up for a ski? I can offer a ride from Melbourne outer SE suburbs or somewhere along the way if necessary. Would be a good way to meet fellow XC/touring skiers if anyone is free. Let me know if interested. Cheers.:)

Tempting but I've done my midweek dash for a couple weeks.

Hope you get some good weather - above the tree line - a nice calm day makes all the difference!!

Oh cover looks /sounds pretty good since the 'semi-dump' this week!!

I crashed my Mtn. Bike on a wet bend today ( OUCH! , nothing broken but I am missing quite a bit of skin) but my trip to Mt. Stirling this weekend ,the last weekend of July is a goer. It will go ahead even if I have to strap snow shoes to a wheelchair and have it towed up the hill by a skidoo! ;-P

Why would Explora worry if I have truly knackered /skinned myself by coming off my bike at some velocity?. I can see a quasi day trip to Mt. Stirling forming on Tues. August 8th with a car camp at Carter's road or Sheepyard flat so I don't have to drive home the same day.

Sheepyard flat isn't a bad idea, I used to do day trips to Mt Stirling but it it is just a tad too far. Normally get a motel unit in Mansfield but Sheepyard is very pleasant and free, although a bit of a detour off the highway! Whats Carters like?

Carter's Rd is not flat ,it is on a slight hill , but it is a quick hop off the main road. There is a pit dunny and a fire pit there. There is also a picnic table.Water comes from a short walk to the edge of the Delatite river.
Sheepyard Flat is more of a drive off the main road but much nicer all round.
