    Hi All

Mt Zeil is the highest peak in NT. I intend to climb it in the cooler months, ie late May to early June, next year. Doing my research, it doesn't look like I should be trying to solo climb this one. Is there anyone with good bushwalking / navigation / 4WD skills mad enough to want to come and do this with me ?

    Very interested.

A mate went that way, not sure he ended up making up the hill, I think they got distracted. I think they organised a chopper ride in and out. I'll make some inquiries.

Thought it needed a permit that wasn't easy to get?

Yeah I've made some phone calls to NT National Parks. As it is a tough place to get to they are careful on who they give their route information out to. I've now got their pack, they recommend a 10 hour day to climb / get back. There's no marked trail.

That would be Mount Woodroffe in SA which I also still need to scale for the State 8.

Well that's what a mate who did it reported fwiw.

He encountered cold weather and got close to hypothermic.

I drove past it last year heading to WA on the Kintore/Gary Junction Rd. Spectacular peaks all along there.

Haast Bluff, down the road from Zeil.
    c. 1055m but the plain is c. 450m so like Zeil not as high as it sounds.

i think taking the direct route up the LH corner to overhang, maybe a bit of aid, would definitely increase the risk

OK, plans to finish off the last 2 climbs are coming together nicely.

10-12 May - Mt Woodroffe, highest peak in SA. Flying into Uluru and joining a tour group to do the climb.
24-26 May - Mt Zeil, highest peak in NT. Flying into Alice Springs, getting a 4WD to drive to the trail head.

Time to dust off the walking boots and get a few clicks into the legs. Also I'm very glad there is another person from the forums crazy enough in joining me to do this :)

Hope you dont mind... I wanted to get a more '3D' sense of the elevation of Zeil, how it relates to the plains below... how far it is from the roads to the mountain. And the wild-ness. very remote. :)

Most approaches involve walking along that ridge line. Too much up and down if you go point to point. Also, less spinifex.

I would have said a bit back from the ridge, there are cliffletts in the South draining gullies.

None of the State 8 are particularly technically challenging so long as:
    • you pick the right time of year to do them (ie Bartle Frere in the dry season; Mt Meharry/Mt Zeil/ Mt Woodroffe in the cooler months; Mt Ossa/ Mt Kosciusko/ Mt Bogong/ Mt Bimberi when free of snow and preferably in dry weather)
    • you don't get lost (if you are not careful on Bartle Frere it could take several days to get you out once they find you)
    • the weather on the day is OK
    • you pick the easy way up and down (Mt Ossa has been the most challenging so far)

I once flew in a Caribou from Katherine to Birdsville to Richmond. This trip took a full 2 days. As was normal at the time, I was able to fly the aircraft most of the way once we reached cruising height. There was no auto-pilot, that's what we were for. There's a whole lot of nothing out there unless you are into rolling sand dunes and mars looking landscapes.

In the Nasa image, Mt Zeil features. If you click on the link in that post, it will open a super size image.

This is Zeil, cropped down from that.

Red and blue give away gliimpes of the view (south?) too often prior to summit. IMHO. :D

Yeah, but there's 3 things that add to the character of this walk:
    • Access to the trail head; you need to avoid restricted areas of pastoral leases and local indigenous areas
    • Navigation; you would think the maps would clearly show where the peak of Mt Zeil is, they don't. Look up the Federal Government and NT Governments Geoscience sites if you doubt me...
    • Spinafix; you need to get up out of the low areas and onto a ridge line as soon as you can
From that perspective, the red route is best.

In preparation for Mt Zeil @skifree and I joined the SE IT crew for a stroll up Mt Woodroffe, the highest peak in SA.

The plan was to fly into Ayres Rock airport, drive down to the camp site and hike up the hill.

Very luckily for us a recent bushfire has cleared out most of the undergrowth making things a lot more pleasant on the climb.

On the ascent day we started out just before daybreak.

The views on the way up were spectacular.

After 2 hours of scrambling onwards and upwards we reached the peak.

As the day was still young we hiked over to the secondary eastern peak.

A most enjoyable day with the Woodroffe crew

Strava or it didn’t happen yeah ;)

Only 1 more hill until I’ve finished the State 8 :)

You try controlling an internet based mapping product's pseudo flight simulator...... hippy man. :p

Done another for you. Fussy man. Frame rate on this is crap, from my perspective. (Macbook Laptop, circa 2014). Using Quicktime to record screen.
