    Remote place Heard Island.

You’d need a good boat with an experienced crew to sail the 10 days or so to get down there in some of the wildest sailing around.

Then I assume you’d need a valid reason with the appropriate authority to land on the island.

Then I assume you have to follow some bio code so not as to disturb the ecology.

Then you’d need an experienced crew that can attempt the ascent. Given the weather and nature of the climb you need to be prepared for all possibilities. Very likely you’ll be getting slotted a few times on the way up and you have to pull people out of crevices etc

Then you’d need to safely get home.

    Would be quite an undertaking.

Had planned to be in NT tonight sleeping on a dry river bed, instead it’s a cheap and cheerful hotel room near Sydney Airport.

This time I was let down by the national carrier. I’ve had far, far better success getting out of Canberra on the bus.

This is your Captain speaking. Air Control is saying that it is too foggy to take off. I reckon I can do it, so I am asking your permission to have a crack. Please sign the waiver form in the pocket of the seat in front of you.

    One hill at a time...

Attempting a Zeil summit tomorrow. Weather looks decidedly warmer than on Everest. Probably around 24C. Lovely :)

It was a pretty nice flight up to ASP yesterday. The cloud cleared over Eyre Peninsula and the lakes were very pretty, just a little water in them. Pretty desert like after that and no real hills till the SA / NT border.

this am abc news said 3 had died from "exhaustion" while descending. the heavy traffic was blamed. not sure if this included the 2 in that article, but they did say it brought the total to 7.

There are others? I think you have better odds in defence, on deployment.

But imagine the death rate if these same numbers were having a crack 50 years ago.....

To imagine that you can pay for a nice little holiday, to climb Everest, with little risk, is almost as stupid as what happens when you get a good window, as above. Id feel sorry for them, and in a way i do, but they ask for it too. I wonder what the brochure says about your odds.

State 8 Finale - Mt Zeil

Mt Zeil was the final hill for me to complete the State 8, ie climb the highest peak in every State and Territory in Australia. @skifree agreed to come along for the climb.

The trailhead is ~3 hours drive from Alice Springs. Lots of corrugated dusty roads before our first peak of the climb.

At first light the following day we were ready to start the climb.

    Our starting altitude

This promised to be a tough day and Mt Zeil delivered. No marked trails, some challenging navigation that you had to be on top of, just enough daylight in the day to do the walk, millions of flies, warm conditions, you need to carry all water with you, lots of loose rocks and spinafex and about 1150m of uphill climbing to reach the top.

After 5 1/2 hours we reached the top. Very, very happy to make it.

After a 30 minute break to take in the views and grab a bite for lunch it was time to head back down.

The descent was as tough as the climb up. So much spinafex and no shade. Both of us went through all the water were carrying on us.

5 hours later we arrived back at camp, just as dusk was approaching.

We celebrated around the campfire with some well earned dinner and wine.

Many thanks to @skifree for a most excellent trip.

The blue line is our actual route, the red was the broad brush plan. The track ends prior to the end as fenix5 ran out of battery (started with 100%) before the day was out, just gutless.

You gotta stop calling PDF's images. When you say 'images', I mistakenly think you mean embedded images.

either way, suspect they never went nowhere.
