Hi. During the Long weekend of March 10-12th 2018 a friend and I went off to check out a route up to Mt. Bogong that neither of us have or had walked before.
It was a L O N G drive from Melbourne to the trailhead. I picked up Ann, my co walker from Wodonga.
Once we arrived in Mitta Mitta we were not far from where we wanted to end up.
Following directions that I obtained from Ubi. Steve we headed along in my RAV4 along the Snowy Log road and turned up Mulhauser track.
After about 1 km there was a log across the road. So I put on my safety gear and started the chainsaw. Being a P plater with a chainsaw handling course under my belt I went at the log but lo and behold it became stuck in the log. This was stressful and thankfully Ann was very practical and handy and we worked out a way to get th e bar out of the cut.
Eventually , having lost an hour on that task , we made it to Mulhauser camp . Ubi. Steve pulled up 5 minutes later in the Team Bears mobile.
After a chat we donned our packs and headed for Maddison Hut ruins, making haste before it became dark.
Photo=Day 1.The old sign on Mulhauser spur walking track. I think Ubi. Steve should make a new one for his favourite patch of high country.

As we tonged it along the Long Spur , the sun was sinking and we had to slog it up to Bossiea Hill until we hit the pole line which meant the campsite near the T spur/Long Spur junction was not far off.

Some nice views of Mt. Nelse and Mt. Bogong were on offer as the sun made its final dash for the western horizon.

Day 2. It was busy and sunny at CC Hut. Being a long weekend the Hut area and the summit were swarming with walkers of every description. Camping near the stream at the T spur/Long Spur junction was way better.

Very nice pics...we have no immediate plans to replace Mulhauser sign but perhaps another group with access to wood working tools could whip one up..

Mr T directed that I wave the brush cutter around the Alpine Walking Track Marker which marks the track as it climbs out of micro Saddle on to Mt Mulhauser....Team Bears obliged ...so it is fairly definate which route is the AWT.Table in this little Saddle was deliberately left non whipper snipped with vegetation all around it ...so that it just blends in with the vegetation here.

The views from Bossiea Hill shown by Mr T are impressive and will remain so ...likewise Mt Mulhauser will remain in its pristine state with no man made structures to botch the view and experience.
Again nice trip report.....certainly we where down the quiet side of the Bogong Massive as the summits assaults took place!

We met a nice German girl at the Summit on the way back to our quiet camp site. The crowds of people had all left the summit cairn by then and headed down the Eskdale spur.

On the walk back to the Maddison hut ruins site ,A dip in a very cold pool of water at Howman's Falls was most refreshing.

The cool people in the know stayed away from camping near CC hut esp. when the weather was a good as it was. You don't need a pit loo and a hut in such fine conditions.

Sunrise on Day 3 before we walked back . Was it "like an ad. for butter" as Ann said or "more like an ad. for Christianity", as I said?.
It was possibly "like an ad. for the butter that JC would have endorsed had he been given the chance".;-P

I like these old signs that can be seen even in winter when the snow is almost 2 metres deep.

Extremely nice pics....I have met some folk also that have done a car shuffle between Mt Ck or Camp Ck Gap and Camp Mulhauser ....these warm summer days are best as the Mulhauser approach is dry and easily accessible.

I would scout it out in green season first. We went up there in March. The weather was fab. . I will do this route with snow gear and skis strapped to the pack in the 2019 white season. I would imagine leaving the RAV 4 at the Mulhauser track junction , on the side of Snowy Creek road and trekking up to Camp Mul. and then slogging it up to CC Hut. That would take a solid 6 hours in deep snow, so I would allow a full day with an early start. Camping the night before near Mitta Mitta at either "Lightning Creek" or "The Walnuts" camp sites could be a way to do it. You'd need two nights plus at CC hut to make it all worth it. The bowl at Camp Creek Valley would be nice for BC XC skiing.

About five kms past (when comming from Melb) Mitta Mitta is a Vic Rds Wayside stop....marked in their Blue Vic Rds signs ....this is a good place to stop after driving a long way and you are tired......Team Bears have two picnic tables in there and they seem to have been well received by all ....cis they are out of the way of cars/vans/tents etc.

The two other campsites are also good....they are both popular in summer.

This Eskdale/Mitta approach is very scenic compared to the Ovens or Kiewa Highways.....

Omeo Highway now fully sealed .....just take care till you get used to the country highway which is different to that of the other two listed above.
