Hi all, Planning several nights out touring this weekend from Guthega PS. We know the area fairly well up to Schlink but haven't ventured further than that. Which route is the easiest way up from Valentines or Grey Mare Hut? Would people recommend following the Grey Mare Fire Trail? Would love some insights or tips from the old hands.
The most popular and easiest trip to Jagungal from Guthega is to go to Mawsons Hut via the Kerries, then a day trip from Mawsons to Jagungal. One of the beauties of this is that there are various routes, a bit different in character, but all great. To get to Mawsons from the power station in a day is quite reasonable, depending on conditions.
I should say that following the fire trail from Valentines to Grey Mare is not to be recommended in winter - requires a wade of the Valentines and Geehi Rivers. Go via Strawberry Hill or Mt Strumbo instead.
It’s not marked. You follow the Kerries valley to the broad saddle then bear rightish till you hit the valley of the creek before Mawsons, ski down this then chuck a left half way down and end up at the hut.
If the weather initially is not good it’s easy/sheltered to get to Valentines and then day trip to Jagungal from there or camp a bit further on from valentines.
Another alternative circuit is to go over Gungarten Pass from Schlink Hilton to Tin Hut, then to Mawsons Hut, exploring around The Cup and Saucer enroute. Then either a day trip to Jagungal or continue aroond to Valentines Hut. From there you can do a side trip to the top of Valentines Falls or just head back to Schlink Hilton via Duck Creek.
We ended up doing the following: Friday: Guthega PS to Valentine Hut Saturday: Valentine Hut to Mawson's Hut for lunch then to Schlink Hilton Sunday: Schlink Hilton back to GPS. Awesome trip!
Magnificent. I have hiked from GPS to Valentine's hut in one day in green season. It was quite a distance. It would be faster on skis.
We left GPS at 9.30am and got to Valentine Hut about 5.20pm. Had lunch at White’s on the way. pretty decent ski.
