Dead set. There are some absolutely treacherous gullies if he was to go skiers right of kanko.
    To go there yesterday.....

The Mrs & I will be coming over to Myoko (17-20th Feb) after our Hakuba leg is done. Looking for local suggestions on accommodation that's not too budget/ghetto but not a big hotel, perhaps a good quality Ryokan? Will most likely be riding Kanko & Suginohara the whole time there, is it worth it to pick up discount coupons from Ski shop street in Tokyo when we first arrive or wing it and see what's available when we get to Myoko?

Also, if anyone is keen to ride with/show around a decent non-bogan, non-kook, Aussie by way of NZ couple while we're there i'm keen to say hi! :)

    Budget?

Plenty of coupons here. Cheapest deals are available online. Check the tickets and coupons thread.

I assume that is a typo because you will not find much for Y2000 per night.

Hotel Moc, 2 minute walk to shuttle bus or AKR base. Good food . Not a hotel for ******** bogan FWs. (I hope that never happens in Myoko) Owner Sachiko speaks good english and will forward your gear on the black cat to Narita at the end of your stay If required. Reasonable prices, discount tickets available from the hotel. See hotelmoc.com or myoko.tv
On your dates availability should be ok. Enjoy your stay.

Seconded. Stayed here last week. Rooms are a bit dated but are twice the size of any room that we've had in Japan, the owner was super helpful and the location is great.

Moc is nice, great location, Ken and Sachiko are lovely people BUT not a quality ryokan.Try the Okayama around the corner - just done a great renovation.

For that budget also try the Refre. Nicest place in Akakura IMHO. If you don't mind staying in Ikenotaira try the Gen.

Any problems booking just PM me or check the Myoko booking engine.

In the absence of Bob's big stick, here's mine.

Had to extend it to 5m this morning. It was up to 3.4m and just about to be buried. 380cm up on Akakura Kanko and 450cm at Seki Onsen.

Today was not a wonderful day on slope, bit windy, bit "low vis" and a day to wait it out, really! We did ski a bit in the morning, but it got just too bloody hard to see the terrain and the track. Trip home (to Alp) was full of very forgettable "incidents".
Looking forward to bluebird tomorrow, though!

Just got back from a great trip up to Myoko Kogen staying with Nic at Red Warehouse.
Was an awesome family trip. Kids had a great time at ski school (MSS), wife and I really enjoyed boarding together for the first time in years, and the lodge was comfortable and well setup.
Had a nice mix of fresh deep powder and bluebird conditions.
Quite different to Niseko where we've been a few times previously.
Wasn't anywhere near as cold and very little wind. Much more enjoyable for the kids and no lifts on wind hold. Last trip to Niseko, seemed the mid-upper lifts were on-hold every other day.
Lots of families around and didn't seem to be much going on at night so probably not ideal for a boys trip.
Overall was very enjoyable, and we'll definitely be going back.
And stayed in a 3bdr apartment in Tokyo booked on AirBnB. Was really nice and was about $440 for 3 nights.

Oh, meant to catch up with a few guys from here too.
But you know how things happen, kids get tired, go out for dinner, soak in the onsen, etc etc.
So, sorry fella's, hopefully next time. I'll bring the sake :)

That was my excuse as well. Ski - Beer - Onsen - Dinner - Beer - Sleep and that's the day gone.

M_G, sorry plans for tomorrow have gone a bit pear shaped. Sons mate we think dislocated his thumb today and the local Myoko hospital didn't have a paediatric (?) surgeon on hand so wouldn't see him. His father has now taken him to another emergency hospital about 40 mins away so won't be able to plan tomorrow until he gets back and we know more. Likely I will have to look after his younger son and mine at Akakura Onsen befre they depart at lunch time versus spending the day at Kanko. There's always next year, hopefully :)

Hi all, we're having a cracking week at Moyko- excellent day in the trees at Madarao yesterday and again at MK today... Wondering if anyone has advice on where to ski in and around Myoko as weather warms up these next 2 days? Where is least likely to soften?
So much snow, not complaining, but looking to get the best out of our last 2 days!

No worries Four! My sprog will be hampered by backlogged homework anyway. Next year hopefully. Sorry to hear about son's mate. Guess they've taken him to Chuo or Keinan hospitals. Not much locally unfortunately.

After a trip to see the snow monkeys (and a warning for anyone heading out there, the track is treacherously icy. Snow has been trodden to a sloping ice sheet, so take crampons if you have them!) we stayed down town for dinner at the newly opened "Panorama" restaurant in back of MSS village shop!
If you are around, do yourself a favour and get your ass in there! Book at the shop to be sure of a table!
Great views, food is fantastic, and service exemplary!
They run a coffee shop in there during the day, too, so worth calling in!
Thanks to Matt and the team for last night!

That's the Champion shop Bob. Village shop has 3 level parks right out the front on the main road.

But yeah, I gun it up there. If not I'll get the van bogged. :tany:

Day at Sugi today - not totally clear but could just about imagine a shadow that might have been Fuji-san!
Good snow, but, and not to many bodies on slope. Not sure how many, but covered some km, with at least 3 trips from top to bottom!

Today the rain has stopped but it is white out city. There is a lot of snow about and there is more to come. People are busy on their roofs shoveling away before the snow comes in tonight. With a decent fall tonight and cold temps throughout the week, the base should be quite stable.

Update - It's now snowing nicely

I got all my snow off the roof this morning. Good timing. At present it can't decide whether to sleet, rain or snow. Probably snowing higher up and should get more consistent as the day goes on. Lots of guests having a day off today. Maybe only 20% actually out skiing.

Day off for most was our gain! Ikenotaira was awesome, couldn't see more than 3 metres in front of me but snow was terrific with light dusting coming down all day - had the slopes mostly to ourselves :)

Polished the day off with an onsen & sauna at Landmark Hotel - all in all a terrific day...

Rained overnight and this morning here in Madarao but has been foggy with light snow all afternoon. Stayed in this morning then went for a ski this afternoon. Runs are ok but off piste was a no go, frozen rain crust over the top.

Will be in Myoko staying at the Red from 03/02 - 10/02. Will be at Nozawa beforehand, hopefully this system sets up a nice little period of consistent snow.

I hope this doesn't sound too "latte ish", but can anyone recommend a good coffee in the myoko village? I can do without most western things, but I'm having coffee withdrawals and the cans aren't doing it for me.....

Both Lawson and 7-11 (at least in Hokkaido so I assume everywhere?) have recently installed automatic coffee machines that make pretty good coffee. It's not as good as a proper barista made coffee from a good coffee shop back home but it's fresh ground coffee and it's much better than those cans.

Nearest 7-11 is down on route 18.

Most places have drip filter coffee. We now have a capsules machine as well as drip filter coffee. If that helps and you are desperate drop in but let check with me first to make sure I am in.

Hotel Moc have an espresso machine. If you're not a guest they still serve lunch to the public, it's across the road from the Akakura Gondola. Also I've heard the Cafe next to the gondola do coffee, although I've never had one there myself.
