When is the Kamakura Festival held? The website says it started as NYE event, but says 'festival each February'. Sake in igloo, hmm...:)

Usually mid-Feb but they also have the sake ice bar in there during January.

It is fantastic Sara777. I usually drive right up to the top of the village via the tiny steep street and park near the path entrance. It's then about a 10 minute walk or so.

I'm looking into doing dec - march in Myoko area. Never been to myoko. Do you guys think this area and surrounding mountains will keep 2 experienced riders interested for a few months?

Hmm. I guess you could compare the entirity of the Myoko resorts size wise with Rusutsu but with less ridable trees.
A big downer is the resorts are not connected and have big terrain traps in between them so getting around is a major pain.
Bc is good but not as easy access as niseko, not just a boot pack etc.

Could it keep 2 experienced riders busy for 4 months? Resorts no way.
    Bc possibly.

Nothing is going to give you that in village all mountain linked experience you are looking for like Niseko.
Like I said in the other thread you got to change expectations, or throw a car in the mix and you have heaps of options.

If you have a car for at least some of the time you could still base yourself around Myoko. Lots of other resorts nearby for day trips.

we are considering having a car but we think this would be a difficult thing to do. not sure if renting one is an option, are there car rentals in the area? Would it be too difficult or worth it to buy a car?

We dont expect myoko to be like niseko, but we do like the sound of myoko and its proximity to many other mountains. Our concern is just that we might get bored of the local mountains and end up having to travel around, which comes back to whether we will have a car.

another issue is accommodation, would there even be anything available in the area for a 4 month rental?

You will get bored of the Myoko resorts I guarantee that, luckily though there are some cracking resorts in the area but you are looking at an hours drive each way every day.

As for accom, lol I'll just go and make some popcorn....

Different people have different opinions about staying there that long. I know experienced riders who did 3 months one year and came back the next year. Just be prepared to go beyond the really local resorts and you will be fine. There are lots of resorts relatively nearby that you never hear about from westerners.

Our first year I did 3 months without a car but I would not recommend being quite so dependent on public transport as we were. Problem is you need a visa to buy a car unless someone helps you out. So your options are to plan on hiring for some of the time or finding somewhere to stay that can help you a bit.

And staying for that long you need to get serious about finding somewhere that can accommodate you for the whole period unless you want to move.

And the other issue is that self contained accommodation is very limited in the area.

Yep I run a lodge in the area. Contact me if you want to know what we can offer.

You can rent a car in Nagano or from Joetsumyoko Station. I'd recommend doing that for at least part of the time and it will open up the opportunity for at least another dozen or so resorts. FWIW why not spend a month or so in three different places instead of one? Unless you are looking at season pass costs.

Bob failed to mention he has some accomm in his backyard he might be able to sublet.

Once you look at staying for 4 months you're looking at residential accommodation, not holiday rentals.

Another option could be the Yuzawa region. At least a dozen resorts all within short drive or shuttle bus. This site has a selection of monthly rentals from as low as $250 a month plus utilities, for a small apartment.

Something you will need to factor in is your tourist visa is only good for 90 days I think. this means you have to leave the country and then return for the rest of the time. Nozawaman will be able to shed more light on this

Exactly right ......... I don't like your chances of scoring a rental for that long , even the link that Born2ski put up is for Japanese and doubt very much they would even look at gaijin .Others have been on here before looking to do the same as you with not much luck . The best option might be to get a job with accom .

Re the 90 day visa exempt status, Nozawa man has often said it was easy. But I had not realised how easy till one of my guests from last season went to Seoul overnight to get another 90 days. He did not even leave the airport.

Thanks for the information guys, its a big help!
A few seasons back I did a visa run, just stayed in Seoul for 2 nights. This time I think i'll just get a working visa, but still not work so I can avoid the trip.

There are a number of other sites that do monthly rentals starting from 1 month, some of them are English language websites. :)

Pick your location and then dig around on Google, you'll find a few.

One easy English language website is airbnb.
Here is one apartment in Naeba for $763 a month including utilities, https://www.airbnb.com.au/rooms/7001059?s=S7Y9

And if you find one on airbnb that you really like that doesn't show a monthly rate just send them a message and ask if they would do a monthly rental rate for your dates.

Just read the interview with Aki Kitamura, from Madarao in the snow action mag. Alot of it was about his visit to buller, but there is mention ofa new 1/2 pipe gully snaking for 1km and that Tangaram will open up a tree skiing area.

How would you get a work visa, unless it's a Working Holiday Visa??

But that might be a waste if you are only in Japan 4 months, plus you are supposedly to stay in no one area longer than 3 months.
