We all have armbands. Most ski shops in Japan will sell them normally around 300-600yen. Even Myoko Snowsports sell them.

I'll mention that I'm in town - checked in last night, and skiing till friday. My great record of weather for ski trips continues!

Feeling a bit sick unfortunately, picked up a cold after a few days riding the Tokyo metro. That's twice in 2 trips now, I'll be wearing the facemasks from now on. Early night tonight.

That's too bad! I've been trying to recover from respiratory illness for full two weeks now. Certainly glad I got it now rather than on my trip: only 10 days to go!

Feeling a bit better this morning.

Girlfriend is having a great time though. Really good learner terrain at Akakan and Akakura Onsen, and she's essentially getting 4 days of private lessons with Myoko snowsports as only 1 other person is in her group lesson.

Snowing lightly this morning, supposed to get heavier. Seki tomorrow?

I'm pretty sure I chucked at least one armband in my bc backpack, which is in the snowboard bag that I sent to Skichanger. But you know...I can't be sure!!! ROFL Age and memory - not a good combo! If I stumble across one here in Perth while I'm packing I'll bring it, then in all likelihood I'll have spare.

Reminds me. Need new mitts! There are no gloves in the gear that's there. Must rectify that!!

A friend and his 18yr old son are in town at the moment. They're loving it. Thr wife and mother called me yesterday to say they are having so much fun they'll go back next year and she will join them. Yay Myoko! I'm getting excited now :)

Oh dear. Half of what they said was factually wrong. Should be critical of their accommodation and who ever organized their trip for mis-informing them.

When I first went to Myoko walking up from Kanko to Akakura Onsen, with a baby and a 4yr old, I was surprised that the footpaths weren't cleared, although considering we had 4m of new snow in two weeks I war prepared to let it go, but with relatively low snow this season you would expect some footpath clearing.

I think the 500yen crappy bus service is really pissing a lot of people off including this visitor. And when something really annoys you about a place you then start to see all its faults. Add in a poor snow season which means very little fresh, and lets face it Myoko like most other Japanese resorts is not the place you go to ski groomers. I think the car splashing them with dirty water was just the final slap across the face.

The only way Seki is worth it, is if there's a huge dump and you get there before everyone else. It's very small, and gets tracked out quickly because of its reputation. Suppose to be a westerly today, before turning northerly tonight. Seki doesn't get big snow on a westerly.

The footpath from Kanko to Onsen is cleared this season. I think he is talking about the main street in the village.

The Japanese do not present the area as a "collection" of resorts on one mountain. They present the area as 7 resorts on the one mountain that are independently operated. Tour operators mislead people about this unfortunately.

You can pick up an English trail map for Onsen/Kanko just about anywhere that has trail maps.

All the brochures for the shuttle tell you that you must pre-purchase the tickets. And they tell you where you can purchase them. And your accommodation should be telling you this. Considering you cannot catch buses in most Aus capital cities and pay cash on the bus I don't understand why this is such a revelation to a city person.

I could go on but then I begin to sound just as irrational.

BTW we all know the situation with the shuttles is not good and would change it if we could. But one must tread lightly, slowly and subtly to achieve this sort of change. There is history and politics we are ignorant of behind all these things.

Luckily I've been to Japan before so I know to expect a 'different' snow experience to say the French mega resorts or North America (haven't been there yet though).

If I compared my upcoming trip to Myoko to last year's Euro trip where I skiied Val D, Les Arcs and the Dolomites I'd be setting myself up for disappointment. Then again I know that lift tickets, food on the hill and food and alcohol generally will be cheaper plus there's a certain charm to the slightly rough around the edges Japanese hills :D

Plus, Sandy promised us fresh snow

A lot of US resorts charge for Shuttles! (and parking too!)

    And so do European resorts.

    Its all about managing expectations.

It's from the WSW right now, will turn westerly, so Sugi is right in the firing line.

34, you lucky, lucky bastard.....(monty python not being mean ;)) 40 Sunday, 42 yesterday, 42 today, 42 tomorrow, 40 Thursday - seriously  and no sea breeze - 50+ degree temp swing in less than a week and a half. How I wish I was there, Sugi did the best when I was there.

BTW knee was a minor tear R&R required (doc not impressed) thanks for the pills.....now where to next year savings permitting, surely El Nino only lasts one year followed by biblical snow to backfill the records!

Yes this is the problem.Where to go next year?Current frontrunners are Myoko and then Shiga but will have to study the forum of course over the next eight months. My wife thinks there is something wrong with me.Always on the computer looking at snow stuff. She may be right!Glad to hear your knee is good.I have never been so stuffed as after this trip.To the gym for three months before next year.Hope it gets to below 40 for you soon.We have massive storm about to hit us.Not often we get red on the radar.

Hey if anyone's skiing/riding Akakan tomorrow morning and knows their way around the trees, I'd love to tag along for the morning. PM me if you want.

I'll be by myself while M is in lessons, and shouldn't be skiing off piste without company.

Have shovel beacon probe, and a colour screen gps with japanese topo maps if that helps!

Dumped here this evening. Had to go out twice and each time I had to clear the car, again!

This is much more like what we normally get in winter.

Hi, first post. I'm visiting Madarao in a couple of weeks time and I need to hire ski's/snowboard. Is the resort (Powder Station?) the only hire place, my googling isn't coming up with anything else there. thanks

Great day skinning up Mae-san, the peak was above the clouds in the morning, awesome to climb up into the sun. Pretty crowded up there with a few people making the hike. Excellent run down the north side of the ridge!

Going to Sugi tomorrow so M can try the crazy long green run.

Niigata Nippo is reporting that Niigata is thinking to run for the venue of Winter Olympics 2030:cool:. Hokkaido is also thinking to run for, but Hokkaido has hosted Winter Olympics already before, so it should be Niigata's turn next;)
    http://www.niigata-nippo.co.jp/news/national/20160120229904.html

I hope Niigata will attract more and more international visitors to invest in new faster lifts / gondolas , some more night life options, etc, and I think Myoko has the potential, considering the amazing snowfall, tall mountains, and Japanese culture:)(and rapidly increasing number of Asian middle class people). Korean started investing in Myoko(Ex-Arai resort), so Chinese should invest next;)

Oh please no, we already have enough debt!

You do realise that Nagano suffered the greatest economic slump post WW2 in Japan after the 98 games? And most of the venues are still bleeding red ink every year.

Just spend a small % of that money on more shuttle buses for Myoko, or even better, a connecting lift from Akakan to Suginohara.

M just had to download on the Sugi gondola. The "beginner" connecting trail to Mitahara is as bad as the eagle way at Thredbo!

Do you mean you think it's too flat at the bottom? (Cedar trail.... no need to download)
Or the Mitahara Connection trail, which is easy to screw up?

Ok, warmed up with a few runs on the town double chair and we're on the gondola and trying again.
