After 12 days skiing in Myoko in early Feb we are having 3 days in Nagano city for some rest days before flying home. Now Im thinking if theres anything left in my legs Id like to check out Shiga, for a day to see if we might make it 2019's trip. Any tips, thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

yes, do it. But if you're heading up by bus you might not be able to get up there until mid morning. Which makes me think.....you need time for Shiga....it's BIG

From what i've read in the past about your previous trips I reckon you would really love Shiga.
Maybe next time split your time between Myoko & Shiga?

This year will be our 4th trip to Myoko so thinking trying something different. I have always wanted to try Shiga.
My wife is a big consideration as she is is not as confident, however skiing the same hills has helped improve greatly and enjoying her skiing.
Myoko suits us, buts time to move on after this trip

Dont think wife will ski shiga , shes buggered after 12 days so it will be a solo day if I decide to ski.

I'm saying maybe skip it this year and next year try a week in Shiga and a week at another, such as Nozawa Onsen.
    You will have a ball.

That is def on the cards, been to Nozawa, i get the feeling 10 days in Shiga is too long, so maybe myoko and shiga as you said, we also prefer staying in Pensions for the personal touch.

Another great option is Shiga / Madarao, if you have been to Noz. Easy transport between and great pensions.
Edit: 10 days is not too much in Shiga if you are ok with in house Japanese food for most meals within pension.

    Nagano - Shiga day trip.
Easy with a hire car mid week.
Just leave early before 6.30 to avoid traffic,

Can be a slow trip back last few km's into Nagano in peak hour, so stopping for an onsen and dinner on way back in Yudanaka or Nakano works.

If doing a day trip by bus from Nagano, get off at Hasuike, and ski all the way to Yakebitaiyama and back. You'll get more on snow time.
But you need to make sure you can ski that long and far..... And be able to find your way there and back!

Out of curiosity I had a look at my info from last season, which had the Nagano to Shiga bus timetable.
First bus of the day leaves Nagano East Exit at 8.15am and actually only goes as far as Hasuike arriving at 9.26am.
The next bus doesn't leave Nagano until 9.05am arriving at Hasuike at 10.16am with this one going all the way onto Okushiga Gondola arriving at Hasuike at 10.16 and Okushiga at 10.41.
Returning to Nagano from Hasuike, the bus leaves at 14.35, 15.30, then 17.00 and the last one is 17.50.

The main issue is finding the way there and back if you're on a timetable. I can beat the bus to Prince West Hotel from Hasuike/Maruike skiing (From Maruike, it's 6 lifts including a rope tow!!!). The shuttle bus takes more than 30 min, and I can ski it in about 25min.

Cheers Mate.. I have decided to hire a car for the 3 days, be my first time driving in Japan, will be fine Im sure.
I wonder if its worth just going for a drive there to scope out the place. My heart and mind is up to skiing a extra day just not sure on the body, lets see who wins..

    Just stay flexible.
IMO matsumoto is a more interesting city than Nagano.

Shiga is pretty high (in Japanese terms), so choose your day if you want to have a look (as a first time driver). Those bends!!!!!

If you are a experienced snow driver it's cool up to Shiga. If not...depending on conditions????.
The road goes up and up and has plenty of bends.
Reference: the top of Akakura Kanko is the bottom of Ichinose in Shiga Kogen in altitude.
For the future: you definately don't need a car if your going there for a week or so the following season, as your pretty much ski in / out were ever you book with nearly all the areas lift connected.
You and your wife will love it..............guaranteed!!!!

Shiga Kogen is the highest proper resort in Japan. The lowest point (1330m) is higher than some top elevations in Japan, and the top is 2307m.
The only lifted point for sliders that's higher, is the Senjojiki Cirque, which is 2600m - 2882m. But it's a temporary T-bar.

Probably better to go to a place with an easier drive (depending on the weather)

    You'll be fine driving.
Car will have snow tyres. The road is really good; not difficult and kept well cleared even when it's dumping.

The main thing is taking note of which car park you parked in and remembering how to get back there.
Mark it in your trail map!

Iizuna or Togakushi. Both an easy drive from Nagano 30-40 minutes at most and both mostly off the foreign radar, particularly Iizuna.

Yes agree, both are great for a days skiing from Nagano.

But the op wants to scope out Shiga Kogen as a possibility for his 2019 trip
and wants to know if it's feasible to do so as a day trip from Nagano.
It definitely is... ( as a Victorian used to day trips to Buller it's a soda)

Thanks Guys, you have me excited, firstly, first driving in Japan and trying out shiga. Shiga was one of the first places I planned on visiting, just got hooked up with good people and good location , being Myoko.
I lived In Eltham Vic, for a while and would drive up to Buller for a day, I was working weekends so had days off Tues and Wed. So would head to buller, small crowds and by memory 2.5 hrs clip on.
Spoke to wife she happy to spend the day shopping, def had enough skiing by then. So could be a solo day trip out there.

Spent many years driving the back roads of the NT, so I have some idea on varying conditions, but not much snow driving. should be fine.

Yes. Standard. You'll only need a small car. Between 4000/6000 yen per day.

A number of rental places directly opposite or near the main Nagano JR train station. Use the website above to book. Simple.

I got a Honda Vitz/jazz for 4480 yen a day. Via a campaign. Nissan is generally the other cheap option.
