Sure feels like it @Vinny !

Apparent temp at nearby Applethorpe is currently -3.6C at 9:20am. Meanwhile the standard temp is 4C.

The winds have already brought some trees down (saw a couple earlier this morning beside the road and Sandbank informed me there’s another one on the New England Highway (thanks Sandban

Anyway above is a slow-mo video I took of the snowflakes here this morning. They were frustratingly hard to capture well on video because there were only occasionally light flurries and the rest was dominated by tiny snow grains, rain, and sleet.
Not the best snowfall for here but hey, still officially counts as a snow day.
Tony Auden has given you a plug.

Hey Ken, your name also showed up here….

They would’ve gotten what I said from some other source and mashed it together with comments from other people into the same article @WarwickEye2Sky (I’d say their original source was the ABC as far as my comments go because they were who I used those words with from memory).

I’ve never even heard of that Electroverse mob, let alone talked to them before.

Yup, it’s amazing how quickly information is shared/spread and sometimes misquoted in today’s world. Just thought you would be interested.

From later in the morning the temperature became cool while the temperature rose slowly to the maximum temperature in the mid afternoon. After the temperature was cool early tonight it eased to slightly cool as the temperature fell a little slowly. Dew point have been moderately low from the mid morning that fell slowly from the mid morning becoming stable tonight. Relative humidity was slightly below average that fell slowly from the mid morning before rising from the mid afternoon with the relative humidity moderately low from early tonight that was briefly slightly below average late tonight. Light W to SW winds in the morning of increasing speed with moderate winds in the late morning, then light W to SW in the afternoon, light WNW to WSW winds tonight while easing with some NW winds.

Darwin on 17.9 deg , they'll be freezing too haha.

Also 6 deg on my patio south facing and 17.8 deg inside warmest side west facing . 16 east facing back inside.

Sounds pleasant :)

So far this morning down this way, -4.1 at Wellcamp Airport, -3.9 at Oakey, and -3.7 at Applethorpe. A bit of a breeze has kept min temps from dropping too much in some places but some of those figures may well still drop a bit further before the early morning's out.

Yeah i don't mind it, we went walking the dog near the harbour this morning, felt icy and dry but as we were walking briskly it almost felt too warm coming back (guess moving fast keeps you warm)

Got home and my dad had to put the ducted air con on for 20mins at 26 deg ! but then switched it off after 20mins got too warm said it takes the chill out of the air. Luckily it will warm up to 18 deg today (better not be 16 deg !)

I see it has risen to about 19 deg inside on the warmest side of the house.

I think we get acclimatised to such warm weather here when you have a winter like last which i swear was warmer it sort of takes a bit to get used to .

Here's the weirdest thing. Last year (image below) July averaged colder mins about 12.3 deg Yet the month is not out and it's averaging 13.3 deg lol

1626900062881.png

I had a look back and June last year average mins were warmer averaged about 15.2 (average is 13.6 deg) May mins were slightly below.May last year day time was a degree below average (had a 13 deg day last year NW cloudband? possibly)

This year May was bang on average all over and June last month 0.3 deg below for days and +0.3 for mins.

So yeah i guess you could say it has "felt " colder this year because the first month of winter here was colder overnight than last year and so far the average maximum (month is not yet out i know ) is actually slightly higher than last year but could drop to similar to last year depending.

If that makes sense.. probably should do a comparison table of numbers .

Weatherzone (not sure if BOM has any different records ) says
Lowest On Record min Yeppoon
-0.1°C
25th July 1995

That is pretty impressive for up here. Would like to have experienced that up this far north.

Yep @Vinny -0.1C is indeed the lowest there. Set on the 25th July 1995.

Yesterday's max temps on the Downs and SEQ (not official yet because we have to wait for the 9am cutoff time):
8.1 - Applethorpe.
10.1 - Toowoomba.
17.1 - Brisbane.

Obviously with the strong windchill factor, feels-like temps were far lower than those.

Some patchy rain may move across here again tomorrow but not expecting a great deal in terms of rainfall accumulations.

You can see not all of QLD has winter only restricted to nights/early mornings, although it was still very decently cold yesterday by local standards.

Not as cold as expected here at home (Kin Kin), temp got down to 5.8c where nearby Gympie was 0.4c. Even the airport right on the coast got cooler. I did notice a slight breeze here this morning though so maybe it was quite localised with most other places being quite still?

I finally got around to uploading a short timelapse video i have been working on for the past few months. Show's a few of the more impressive storms here on the coast earlier in the year plus more! Only goes for the 3 minutes so check it out if you have a spare minute on your hands!

10.30am and struggling to hit 15 deg around 14.7 deg, vs yesterday here about the same time 18.5 deg

It seems crazy it will be pushing 27 deg (above average) with higher dew points in 48hrs.

15.5 deg @ 10.50am... wind has gone easterly so straight off the ocean, now what i don't get is wind is coming off the ocean so should be more humidity or warmth but nope .

Wow @GBerg that was fantastic! I loved the rainforest creek with the sunbeams sliding across, so beautiful and of course the storms bubbling away! Great work.

I am somewhat envious of those min temps. Your min temp warmer, but anomaly probably simliar.
Early this morning I felt the Ipswich dark before, upon sunrise, and after sunrise early morning temps.
The nearest weather station Amberley got below 273 Kelvin but the difference between Amberley and Ipswich temps is something I am yet to learn about.
anyway…..geez it was cold, I am hoping that is the coldest we feel this winter because otherwise the brass monkeys may get too much Ego.

I thought with the sun out today no clouds and being this far north it would feel warm today but it did not. Feels like temp didn't go past 13.
We are about a month after the winter solstice. I generally think about now or anytime around a fortnight before or after this time of the solar year is when I expect the coldest time.

Hey guys, just lookin for some insight into tomorrow's potential around Brisbane and southern coast. Things we need to know when you work in earth moving. Much appreciated. DD
@DDstorm I have only caught up on this thread and saw your post.
I think tomorrow looks like WTF (wet this Friday).
This outlook with recent obs make this a PWTF (persistent wet this Friday)
i am hoping we see less frequent WTFs in the near future whether they be forecasted and preferably less frequent actual WTFs :blb:

Some brilliant time lapse, really enjoyed it!! Music was very fitting. Thanks for sharing.

You must be pretty patient to get all the individual photos and then create the time lapse footage.

Temperature eventually dropped 8.6 deg (forecast said 11 deg) this morning and 5.3 deg in Rockhampton (forecast said 8 deg)

Still cool this morning but you can feel the difference . 6.30am this morning nearly 11 deg vs yesterday just under 5

Apparently the 4.5 deg was the coldest in 6 years in Yeppoon.

Can't believe it is going to be 24 deg today and 27 deg tomorrow with 17 minimum lol goes from one extreme to the other, 27 is above average as is 17 .

A rather bleak overcast sky here with a few spots of rain. Still on track for some patchy light rain and shower activity to continue moving across southern QLD and eastern NSW today but with mainly low totals. On and west of the ranges may do a touch better but still only modest totals there as well. Satpic+radar via WZ above.

Ken, there's bit some articles around suggesting a weakening jet stream may have been responsible for blocking patterns causing the NE Pacific heatwave and the western Europe floods. Could the central China floods also be attributed to that? The timing and pattern would certainly fit.
The China situation is due to the monsoon trough parked right across them, plus a nearby typhoon pushing a converging easterly stream across the northern part.
