I think you need to wake up and take a wider interest in the world around you. Perhaps even thinking a little about the people who put themselves in harms way to defend you.
Ok rant time.
What is the bloody point in tax payers money paying for a bloody radar that works half the time, so we can judge rain amounts. Just so fwit government department can go and throw chaff into the sky to stuff the radar so we cant get an accurate idea of rain.
Just dumb founded

The radar’s actually a bit deceiving at the moment @Flowin because a fair bit of the echoes that look like heavier rain is chaff that happened to originate near where the convection originally was, and is merged with the real rainfall (there were some pretty looking oval shaped contrails over the Lockyer Valley earlier from the Amberley jets as well).
It also shows up in satpic vs radar comparisons where there’s distinct areas of no cloud despite radar echoes in those same areas.

Some of the lighter rain areas are also evaporating before reaching the ground due to the drier lower levels which is common with those setups.
Thanks Ken. Early last night the radar was showing rain over my place, but I went outside and no rain at all, Missed the lot. So that explains it - radar echoes.

@Tsunami it's also worth remembering that dual polarised radars (which a number of radars in Australia now are) have improved abilities to distinguish between real rain and chaff, as well as other different forms of real and anomalous precip.

Unfortunately for the general public though, dual polarised data is only available to forecasters.

P.S. Welcome to spring everyone.

But whats more important? Practicing killing people just in case we need to kill some people from somewhere else that we don't like. Or being able to tell whether rain is coming without opening the window, sticking your head out and having a look?

The first day of spring, and it certainly felt like a change of seasons. It turned into a reasonably humid day with dewpoints in the high teens this afternoon/evening and even flirting with the 20 degree mark (e.g. Port Macquarie's dewpoint got as high as 19.8 degrees). The light winds also made the humidity more noticeable too.

Areas of low cloud developed this afternoon, with bases as low as about 225-250m above the ground, cutting off the top of Smoky Mountain. My photo taken from Rainbow Reach late this afternoon, looking NE towards South West Rocks and the neighbouring Smoky Mountain:

I tried to reply to some posts last night but found I'd already exceeded the number of posts that was allowed by the new Ski pass I bought, doh!

Since the weather in our area looks to be reasonably uneventful in the near future apart from showers, above is justs some of the footage that's been emerging from the remarkable widespread flooding that's been inundating the Northeast in the US over the past few hours.
Records, some long-standing, for both rain rates and flood levels have been broken by big margins in a number of areas.
The footage from Brooklyn in particular strikes a chord with me since I've stayed there for awhile.
The NWS have been issuing flood emergency alerts with flooding to catastrophic levels.
Large multi-vortex tornadoes have also been filmed in New Jersey.... a rare sight in the Northeast compared to the Plains States.

The cause of the tropical deluge is ex-hurricane Ida interacting with a front.

I mentioned earlier this year that the update of the EC EPS ensemble model in May with changes to the ensemble system resolution in vertical levels were expected to produce better consistency between the ensemble control member and the higher resolution deterministic model.
Previously some of the occasional wild differences between the EC EPS control and hi res main model were outstanding.
We are now a few months past May and from what I have seen so far I am becoming impressed with the better consistency but it needs to convince me for a decent rain event and other significant unstable weather events as well.
So I look forward to see how it goes with storms this spring and wet weather next summer…

IMG_6782.jpg

that second photo has an awesome timeless quality to it

If somebody found that photo in a long buried time capsule in say 30 years from now, they would probably not be able to determine the date from the image visual.
Is that 2020s ? or 150 years earlier in 1870s?

Time capsules were popular last century and I haven’t heard much about time capsules this century. Until recently when my father told me about a time capsule he went to the burial event some 50 years ago, and recently went to the digging up event of the same capsule!

I reckon if a time capsule were buried today, then the folk in a few decades from now, that do the rediscovery digging up of the capsule, or whatever technology is used to ‘open’ the ’knowledge doorway’ of the capsule would be interesthing to watch …. Maybe they use radar or a scanner LOL
They would probably resort to determining the date of the photo from its digital time stamp

time goes on…..
