WATL prediction up to the 11th of Sep. Nothing for NE NSW or most of our area and northwards. After that, whatever is coming I don"t know. After the change tomorrow a huge high moves right up over Australia, blasting cool dry air well northwards. Looks like any hope of a start to the storm season or any sort of rain will have to wait until the second half of September.

Yep, that next front might bring the outside chance of some showers or patchy rain areas for our area around tomorrow afternoon or evening but even if it does occur, rainfall accumulations east of the ranges look like being very low for the most part.

Another interesting aspect of that huge high is how strong the trade wind flow could get for parts of the northern QLD coast... EC currently has gusts up to 90km/hr in some of the more exposed parts of the coastal fringe and tablelands up there.

September is always a frustrating month. We start to get the heat, but little in the way of moisture. Hopefully we don't have a repeat of last year's horribly dry spring.

I see South Brisbane Storms have said on FB how bad the staplton radar is and how it could risk lives by not working. As no Doppler on the other one.

Chaff returns tend to show up much less in lower elevation radar scans during the early stages when it's still higher up @Tsunami . After awhile, the chaff eventually falls out to lower altitudes and becomes more prominent in lower elevation scans but less prominent in higher elevation scans.
Forecasters look at all elevation scans when diagnosing severe weather but unfortunately, the public radar imagery basically only represents one block of altitudes because it's merged imagery. So once chaff falls into that height range, it fills up the public imagery with lots of echoes. It doesn't take a lot of chaff to cause lots of returns on radar imagery because of its high radar reflectivity on certain wavelengths.

Chaff can also be more easily distinguished from real rain using dual polarised radars like we have now but again, only available to forecasters.

Chaff's a self-defence countermeasure when it's used against the immediate threat of air to air and surface to air missiles in combat but it can also be used to disguise certain manoeuvres against potential prying eyes, especially in the world we live in today.
If knowledge of those manoeuvres falls into the "wrong hands", it then poses a future potential threat to aircrews and national security from a tactical perspective.
Without getting into a political or moral debate, that's just the way it is, like it or not.

So the ADF doesn't set out to annoy people by using chaff or do it for the fun of it, but the annoying by-product is how it appears on weather radars, especially on public radar imagery when it falls through a certain height.

I gotta say the tension in situational awareness is quite sharp for context of recent seasons climate and forecast climate at the moment.
On one hand recent seasons have delivered some difficulty in interpreting the climate signals based on historical climate and on the other hand extremes in climate happening around the world such as fires and floods align to warming planet stresses. So it is really hard to guesstimate what this IOD ish post recent Nina event with upcoming ENSO will give us.

ISS was an awesome sight last night and made a nice arc just below Jupiter travelling to the NE. Not quite as bright as Jupiter, but more obvious than Saturn which is higher in the sky ATM.

My completely neglected azalea's been turning on its spring show (1st pic). 2nd pic above is raindrops glistening on the new spring leaves of my English oak in the early morning sunlight.

A bit of frost here this morning (3rd and 4th pics above) which may be the last frost of the season. If that's the case, that'll fit in with the average pattern here where September is the mean month of the last frost of the season.

I generally maintain a healthy caution about long range season outlooks but I still like to look at them to get some informed indication of potential outlook .
The recent update of EC SEAS5 which I like to keep an eye on (particularly get a comparison with Access S) is tending to show the wetter side of average for this spring. :)
But as usual there is quite wide spread among the ensemble members

Latest EC model (deterministic and EPS control) hinting at a low pressure system in around 8 days..... long lead time though and not prevalent in the ensemble members .....
It is also not supported by other models as well ..... so it may well (probably will) disappear in future runs....

Just an update to what I posted this morning…. Not surprising
This one will add to the EC running score on its 8 day lead time forecast flip flop index…. But that is rather irrelevant as nobody is keeping score

The SE winds are keeping the monthly temp below average 1.1 deg below for days and just 0.6 above for nights. The feels like temp was only 18 deg today despite it being 22.5 deg..

Last couple of mornings have been chilly, 13 deg when the average is 15.8 deg.

I see a slight change on Monday where it goes more northerly and we go to 25/26 deg then back to you guessed it SE winds again lol.

Weird question, I have noticed that although it is clear here there seems to be a lot of haze. Especially Tuesday morning when it technically should have been clear after that little front moved through on Monday and there was yet to be any burnoff fires locally that day?
Is it possible the smoke has blown up and blanketed from Vic with that Southerly wind Mon/Tues as I have just checked the satellite and saw this, this is bushfires yes?
I tried to attach my QT file of the satellite animation but was too dumb.

Howsey gentlemen, Going through a quiet period weather wise, standard for this time of year, beautiful start to spring to, noice pics KK & Sandbank, and write-ups, incl Flowin & rest of the group

I saw the approaching trough for later this week-end the other day showing some promise of a wet-down along with a bit of instability, but low-&-behold, since been down graded, ahh well, bit early to expect too much

Anyways, went for a bit of a Blatt today, dropped into Hinzes Dam, beauty of a day and nice to see its capacity @ 94%'ish,, and the whole SE Grid not bad @ 57.5%, but if take away the 3 dams below 5%, this would change the average of the remaining 21 dams to be @ 81.7% not bad at all comng out of the dry season, funny only 12months or so ago, everybody worried about the Big Dry & Aus being burnt to the ground... can never tell in reality eh..
