Hey everyone I'm new here so to tell a bit about myself, I've only been to the snow once years ago as a kid and did a bit of boarding and loved it at the time. So now on my gap year, I have a season pass to Falls Creek and Hotham and I'm maybe planning to do a fair few weekend trips during the season (3 days 2 nights) but I am trying to keep the cost to a minimum.

I've started to estimate costs based on said trip length factoring return bus fares, resort entry, accommodation (as a loner), food, lessons and gear hire and I'm still approaching close to 1k for each 3 day trip. This does seem about right to me but I have no knowledge of resorts and prices here, if anyone could recommend maybe packages or ways to axe accommodation costs (sharing somehow?) I'd seriously appreciate it, cheers!

Getting weekend accommodation in High season can be difficult. Don't want to put a dampener on your plans, but best you know. Why not plan a week in there somewhere, cuts down on transport costs and booked early ensures accommodation.

Or consider working for a season up there.

No need to work. Has the pass already. Would ride more by saving up before the season and doing a decent stint.

If you've got the cash, I'd suggest trying to pick up a job & accom up there, with as litle work hours as possible. Preferably at night. Or just get accom for the season, no job, and ride all day every day (this might be difficult as accom often comes with a job). As far as I'm aware, you only get a season pass if you work for the lift company, so there's a lot of other (better) jobs available if you already have your pass sorted.

All the replies are greatly appreciated guys! I wish I could stay for the whole season and work there but my other work commitments won't permit it, I can't take leave like that so it's not an option unfortunately. Under a week at a time is my best bet (preferably 3-4 days).

On another note, it's really hard to find cheap accommodation for a single person going only by themselves; is there some sort of site, forum or service where people can all agree to share accommodation? Maybe that might be of help to me

your best bet will be to find a few club lodges that take visitor bookings. then call around and stay where you can.

Camp at Mt beauty and travel up/hitch each day could be an option.

Or have a look at something like Chorki Ski Lodge and be prepared to share accommodation.

Have a look at shared accommodation in Bogong Village as well - between Mt Beauty & Falls Creek, much cheaper than Falls.

You may want to consider Howman's Gap Alpine Centre. Prices include all meals and I don't think they have a minimum stay. 4 klms from the FC village. Not sure if they provide transport, take a look at their site.

Cheer Apresski, I know most lodges and whatnot charge 50% more for the fee if you're staying solo. I would be happy to stay with strangers though if it was do-able, I'm guessing there is no way the lodges would help set this up at all

But cheers for the recommendation I'll give it a look

Brilliant Stansi! That's extremely helpful! Thanks also Chriscross

As for gear, if the cost breaks even with hiring I will, depends on the amount of trips I take.
Kinda hijacking my own thread here but got anyone got any board recommendations of the top of their head for a 6'1 80kg guy?

I know this not related to Falls Creek but when I went to Perisher last year I found a great deal for accommodation on the Wotif site. Doesn't harm to have a look and do a bit of research on the listed places on offer. Check for good reviews on Trip Adviser and what services are offered, pick up/drop off at lifts etc. If you find something that looks good by all means bring the details back here. I'm sure are plenty of FC regulars who would know what's good and what to stay away from. Early and late season will usually be the best times to find a good deal.

No transport but you can get Falls Ck coaches to stop.

The place used to be fairly cheap but these days it'll be over $100 per night in a twin or bunkroom. Yes it includes 3 meals.
