So, it looks like Canberra will have its own indoor ski centre soon:

    http://www.vertikalsnowsports.com

My sense is that this type of business doesn't really have a happy history, though I hope sensible business practices and pricing prove me wrong.

    cheers

I would probably use it for another type of fitness training for during the off season. Then when the season starts I at least won't hurt as much

2 1/2 hours to real snow? This one is more doomed than any of the others, and that is seriously doomed.

So far the score in Australia is about 5 - nil, but anything is possible.

That was my thought when I read the OP.

Good luck to the operators and I hope they make it, but precedent is not on their side.

Probably aiming more for the non winter exercise when the real snow isn't around, as there should be a reasonable number of snow users in Canberra. Depending on pricing I'll at least give it a try.

One of the local skate/board shops has a little park set up that gets a bit of use. I don't do park stuff so haven't tried it out. Been tempted to though.

perhaps people who are heading off for a holiday will use it to brush up their skills the week before they go?

very much a casual activity though and not something your business could rely on

Sharp edges cut up the carpet. The former Sydney operations included skis in the hourly price.

I’m still of the opinion that a proper outdoor dry slope is the way to go. I’d be using a good dry slope weekly in Sydney

I'll be using it, although with them in Canberra and me in Sydney it may just be for one or two post season sessions or one or two pre season sessions.

Mate posted a vid on FB of him on it. He is an expert skier, but it looked like it takes a bit to get used to, he was not as smooth as usual! Apparently they are keen to see someone try tele on it.

My one time on the carpet I felt I needed to initiate with more unweighting than I would on snow. Maybe the carpet is more sticky

I thought it was a close analogy to on snow ski technique, but not the same.

Ever get the feel that the industry in general is just targeting people who ski for one week a year at most, and just trying to mine the shit out of them?

Note the pricing is for an hour lesson, no free skiing.

Bloody Nora! Pricing is not conducive to attracting new users. Perhaps they believe there is a market amongst the very highly paid public servants in the Capital?

What - have they all moved into Local government now? Judging by the amount of housing being built in Canberra, I suspect there is still plenty of money flowing in the capital. My bank statement certainly shows bucket loads of cash being poured that way!

Up to 6 people in a group, max of 3 people on the carpet means half an hour less start / stop times when someone falls

@Jacko4650 it is still a PS town, but not as much as it was, and less so every budget. It still has a high median salary, education, and health levels (not necessarily medical services, more a healthy bunch) compared to the rest of Australia.

IIRC there were construction delays with the building and surrounding area. Bad timing for them.

Does the upcarpet skier have to give way as the down carpet skier slows and comes hurtling up towards them.

With prices like that I cannot see it being a success. Perhaps if they had race nights or timed periods of free skiing and boarding they may attract more regular customers. I would like to support them but not at those prices.

Same, especially over winter. If I paid a monthly membership fee, the session fee is still more than it costs me to do a day trip

The folllwing web site example states "At the professional level..." which is NOT what they have done when it comes to site building considering the alignment mistakes (elemental) and problematic punctuation.

I know a really good skier who tried it and said that he felt like a beginner again. I say it will be suitable for 3, beginners just to get a feel for sliding.

I hope they can make a go of it.

    I'm also hoping for a 3m season.

A 3m season, however, is more likely IMO.

In2ski lasted 18 months, but I'm sure it would have been cheaper to have closed sooner - In2ski seemed to have deep pockets.

As best I can tell from the photos this new place in Canberra has the old In2ski machines and even their skis (which are rubbish).

I'll give them 12 months - depending on how much money they want to lose.

I used In2ski 3 or 4 times and really enjoyed it. It’s not quite the same as skiing but pretty close. One of the best things about it was the giant mirror directly in front of you so you could see exactly what you were doing wrong in real time which made it a much easier and faster process to correct technique. I think it’s a great concept but I agree with others – it’s just too expensive. $60 an hour without the membership fee would be more like it. Especially for out of town visitors that only expect to use it a few times a year.

Making all the same mistakes the failed ones made.

Oh no we wont fail like all the others, we will use the same over pricing, employ a pile of people an rent and expensive premises like all the others same same.
Its a shame people who open these things up don't have the business senses to run lemonade stand.

I can see it being attractive to beginners - or people who are going to take beginners to the snow. With accomodation costs so high, learning the basics before you go makes some sense. Get a lot more out of a weekend/short stay if you can already control a snow plough. A one month membership before going to the snow for the first time looks ok.

Maybe Canberra would have a higher percentage of people likely to go to the snow. Enough to make it viable? probably not

@currawong , except for beginners its often less about the skiing than it is about going to the snow.

If someone wants to ski for an hour long session at this place to see what it's like then it will cost them $130. This seems to be the complete opposite of a good way to build up a business. They could have a reduced rate for the first month or so to try to get some customers - some sort of an opening special.

A quick look at the website of the Brisbane indoor ski centre shows them charging $60 per visit for an equivalent session.

If you skied 4 times a month at the Canberra place then it would cost $81.25 per visit ($65 monthly membership + $65 per session). If you skied 2 times per month it would cost $97.50 per visit.

I bet that they drop their prices pretty quickly when they find they can't get enough customers.
