Will the new Eagle Chair have hoods or have the detachable chairs taken off line every night and parked in building undercover? We need one of these options on all new chairs so when there is wet snow followed by an overnight freeze we do not have to sit in melting ice on the chair for half the next day. Most Japanese resorts have both these features on their chairs with lower temperatures and therefore significantly less frequency of icy chair seats and with significantly lower lift ticket prices. If the Japanese resorts can provide these facilities on their chairs I see no reason why Australian resorts cannot provide them at the much higher prices they charge. Failure to provide these comforts will doom Australian resorts to a continuation of flat line skier numbers while Australian skier numbers in Japan continue to grow strongly.

Our high winds can make hooded chairs a problem, but yes hooded chairs would be fantastic protection form our broken glass like snow

Hoods are nice, but I would have foot rests before hoods. It's not a long ride on the Eagle anyway

The cost of a detachable is far higher than a fixed grip and thats a pretty good reason why they won't do it.

I'll be up at Falls at Easter, staying right near the bottom of Eagle, and will be keen to check out the progress. The last few weeks would have been great up there given how stable the weather has been.

The new Eagle chair is a detachable.

Oh, I had it in my head it was a fixed grip. Had it confused with the new Leichhardt at perisher.

    Ignore what I said then

Ride should be a lot quicker , both in terms of less stoppages at loading and higher upload speed , which mitigates some of the exposure issues per se that i hood might help with .

I would be surprised if they kept the chairs on the line overnight.

Hoods would not have been a bad idea as you do get hit in the face with the southerly/south westerly. Not a pleasant experience for a beginner.

If they put shields/hoods on it, it would be shut 5 days a week on wind hold.

    Dumb idea.

My sceptical self asks what is it going to achieve? Will it enable learner folks from the village to get to cloud nine without a major traverse. I think not. No doubt it will enable skiers to go to RC the back way quicker from the bowl. The big issue is the Gully chair.

It will enable there to be an eagle chair. Old one was too old with spares very hard to get. It wasn't viable to keep the old one going.

Gully will get some hand me downs from eagle which may help.

Not sure what is happening about improving beginner access fro eagle to cloud 9 but they were looking at how to improve it.

I'm hoping it sees more use of monkey bar, which is an excellent beginner run. Plenty of width to work on completing turns, rather than wombats which encourages racing snowplows. Even without improving access to cloud 9, a detach should still take some traffic away from express in the morning.

Was looking at new eagle this past weekend, doesn't look like alot has been done. Old towers are still up, cable been removed and some pulleys are gone, I'm sure there is a schedule to keep, I wonder if they are ahead or behind. Hopefully the new chair will be ready to roll before the first snow falls.
The gully carpark has new towers and pulleys at the ready.
We were up mountain biking....was so much fun.

I'd suggest if the Gully saw an upgrade before Eagle, there may be a bit of a bottle neck at Eagle during some periods. With Eagle getting the upgrade first, they would avoid this. The next obvious move would be to upgrade Gully to increase total lifted capacity across the whole hill, relieving pressure on the FCE quad.

Ski lifts are bits of lego and before you know it, it will be looking almost complete, for example it will take a day to put in the new towers and pull the old ones out.

Can you do a racing telemark snowplow? I may have been guilty of this a time or three when getting my legs back.

Eagle was run on slow allot as it serves foot traffic to the look out and Snow mobile tours etc. loading and unloading foot traffic on a detachable is much easier and doesnt slow the actual line speed.

Hoods in Australia is a bad idea. Wind as mentioned, also they are horrible on sunny warm days which we get allot of, you roast in them in direct sunlight. I could also see vandalism as a problem with them here unfortunately.

Why would it operate any different to Falls Express? I've rarely been on FX when its been stopped or slow. Very nice ride.

I assume they'll use the existing pads, so it's fairly simple to heli lift out the old towers and replace with new ones.

Yes there appear to be new footings. Check the link to the live cam at the top of this thread (maybe not at the moment as all you see is fog) but the alignment of the lift appears to be different to the old one

i think it was a dig at fc towies not running a very tight ship.

quite frankly i usually enjoy the more relaxed queues at fc. if it's not busy i don't care if every chair isn't filled and i'd rather they erred on the side of safety than minimising stops. i don't like incompetent bumping (better recently) and i get homicidal about not controlling singles lines

Exactly, detachable will always stop less than fixed. I think people like to complain about falls stops because there are a few fixed chairs that run on highish speeds like towers which can be a shit show on weekends both top and bottom. Getting people down that ramp in time to load can be hard and the ramp up top isnt friendly when wind blown and icey. Drovers chair unload ramp can be carnage too, its steep and on a beginner run, bad combo!

The new detachable eagle will not have 90% of these problems.

Is the top station in the same spot as the old one?

it's going to be a few metres closer to the base. this allows a bigger area immediately after offload for people to stand around getting their bearings. there will also be one less tower. (this info was provided last year - assume it is still correct)

Isn’t this chair pretty much an access chair? Has there been any new runs “summer groomed”
    Or any additional skiing?
I’ve only ever used it to access ruined castle etc. Never been in a big queue .. in fact hardly ever a queue at all .

I like a chairlift with no hoods that gets smashed by the wind and still runs
Keeps the punters away and guarantees wind blown pow right through to closing lifts
Kosciusko at Thredders is brilliant at that

We can only hope, but it will make the y’s and expressway area more attractive than a slow old ride up or traverse from summit

Yep, mainly access but old enough to need replacing. It can get very long queues at time. Some people staying high in the village may also choose to use an improved eagle rather than going down to halleys, shortening queues there a little. If they can improve the link to cloud 9 then that could be significant

That reminds me of another story.

Was at Buller on Bk St getting on the Abom Chair, pulled out my big head to toe rain shell and put it on.
Lifties looking at me and the other like WTF is this goof doing with the big rain coat.
It was clam and sunny at bottom station, but I could see what was ahead of us looking up the hill.

So we get on, chair was full and some knob slams the bar down while I'm trying to tuck the jacket under my legs and and the rest of them lean on the bar so no hope of lifting it to yank my shell out form the stop
Said WTF, how about telling the rest of us your going to pull the bar down or at least make sure others are clear of it FFS.
    Muttered something I didn't hear.

So the other guys on the left are looking me up and down at my rain shell wondering why I'm wearing it.
    I smiled back.

As we crested top of Bk St the wind started, by the time we made the next tower it was blasting ice sideways.
I was covered fully under the shell and hood and peeked out around the corner of the hoodie to get a look at them
By next tower all of them are cowering with arms over their faces to stop the ice blasting, it didn't help, they were coping it big time,
Bar slammer was to the right side and taking the full brunt of it.

As we went to unload I pulled the hood back and said loudly.
"Yeah how about the wind eh", laughed and skied off.

    Buller life.

If Gully speeds could be improved it would take some load off Inter and Halley's.

And the groomers have been doing more to even out that route from Eagle to Cloud 9.

I reckon if they can improve the traverse from top of eagle to cloud 9 the hill might be more cohesive,

Are we forgetting the amount of snow Japan receives each season versus Australia. I'm pretty sure Australians are not flocking to Japan for hooded chairlifts!

The drum of cable went through town on its way to Falls a couple of weeks ago. That pic shows to me cable on the sheaves both sides and they had the Pretty Valley road closed for a few days last week presumably to put on the cable as it runs across the road.

Panomax cam is fantastic and the Eagle Express looks like it is coming along. I'd assume they would be making the most of today's weather. The Panomax Cam will give a good idea of how much snow there is later this week. It would be great if a camera like this was a permanent fixture.

Falls is extremely unlikely to run anything prior to opening weekend.
Buller being so much closer to Melbourne may choose to do that sort of thing.
