Even so, i would have though he would want feedback on stuff that isn't working. In many cases that will be something he knows about or isn't surprised about because he's working on something that could cause the problem. In some cases it could be very useful information.
What is your default centre click action? Open in new tab?
Describe 'failure' please, just nothing happens or something weird happens like half working dialogue screens but then nothing?
Sounds like memory leak, what the is age of pc and do you happen to know your amount of ram 2,4,8,16 gb?
Thanks in advance for detail.
Default click is open in new tab
The tab starts to open and then disappears
PC is about 18 months old
16 gig of RAM
8 gig of RAM (I thought I asked for 16 - oh well)
And this morning it has been stable.
Seriously liking it!
Win10 current, Chrome current, doing nothing different from what I used to do like ... this morning!
He does now if he didnt before
I'm guessing the new theme had sfa to do with the db problem
Although a commitment to make big changes will always bring risks
(Psst...It's still there, just on top of MS-DOS)
That's a post count on the page, singles let you go up and down by one post, doubles to the top or bottom post on the page. The Nav bar we were talking about earlier in the thread.
yup, moving host after 15 years with the one provider is taking a lot of prep.
Fixed emoji sizing in post and editor
did the horsey's eat all their breakfast?
Minor issue, presumably with new theme
Sometimes the forum menu items do not show (galaxy tab a tablet with chrome). This is happening less frequently than when the theme was first available.
Sometimes rotating to portrait will fix it. Sometimes it is necessary to navigate to another page
Example - the block between the black and blue headers is blank when it should have menu items. On this occasion rotating fixed it
I've also had that. And also getting less frequent. Twice yesterday. Rotating my phone to landscape & back "fixed" it both times.
I've noticed that too. It's always on tablets and phones.
It is entirely related to changes of viewport hiding and revealing the menu. Something in the css must be just one or two pixels trigger happy.
I've not done much with the theme lately. Have been distracted with organising and testing the site move to AWS.
I want to re-organise the menu but any changes with global setting will effect both themes. I don't like the wasted space of the first row with just the logo.
It's well and truly a beta
absolutely understand that it is a beta without a lot of priority for minor stuff. Just reporting something for the list in case it wasn't already there
Much work done on the new theme overnight.
I encourage everyone to continue testing it.
The new theme will become default within a few weeks. The old theme will remain available but will no longer be attended to with fixes.
the row of links
Support & Feedback Announcements Active Topics
seems to have a smaller, paler font?
Active Topics is the link I use most often
older eyes like mine might prefer larger and darker
another odd thing: I typed the names of those links above with 4 spaces between each but they only have one when posted
7 thumbs up.
I think this is the same platform that Pugski uses. They don't have Active Topics, just New Unviewed.
What annoys me about New Unviewed is that once you've read a thread, it disappears from the view until someone else posts in it. I like using Active Topics as my default view here, and being able to go back into a read thread to reply to it or just re-read it.
Yay @Richard ! User bar and Nav bar combined!
On the very small complaint front, I liked the colour of the user bar better
Very minor thing - the "x new alerts" popup is still appearing (on desktop Chrome) but when clicked on, doesn't seem to do anything any more. Been like this for a couple of weeks.
So did I, I'll get round to a colour switch later
mobile or desktop?
I should have said that was on iDevices
the desktop version is better with the black bar, but not sure how that would look in a smaller version
actually, on another look it's a different format altogether?
I seriously miss "new unviewed". I mostly use that with "active topics" only when I want to go back to something recent that hasn't been updated.
I'll pick what I'm interested in using "new" then progressively mark sub forums as read so they completely disappear from my feed.
New Unviewed is now 'Newest Posts' (same as Big Footy) available in sub menu from 'Forums' or 'Active Topics'.
I spent many hours getting Active Topics always in view as a nav item for both desktop and mobile. Can't fit it and Newest Posts across the board as well - maybe on medium viewport and above I can
Couldn't agree more. I can go weeks without using active topics but use new unviewed constantly.
But if we are in the minority then i guess we'll just have to cope. On desktop i have bookmark in the bar so i just click that to refresh the new unviewed list.
I've just taken a bit more notice of how I use this site: On desktop, I keep "New Unviewed" open in the first tab of a window. I open interesting looking threads in a bunch of new tabs. Next time, I go back to the first tab and get the latest "New Unviewed". If the list is a bit long, I'll open less interesting sub forums (sports/USA/Japan/etc) in a new tab then mark them as unread. Upshot is I don't need unviewed on thread pages for desktop. Mobile, definitely want it somewhere within reach. If not at the page top, then maybe the bottom?
Could new unviewed go in with support & feedback? If not I'll just have to learn to live with active topics. World won't end!
You do know the newest posts is in forum sub menu on mobile yes
Technically the categories are a loop. Travel Snow, Après Help Resort's- So if new posts is in one it's in them all.
Yes. I'll change my "workflow". Adds one click and page refresh to get to it. Being one of the few I'll live with that.
Mark forums read has gone from individual forums. Can only see it from "top level" pages.
I have discerned that this is a result of constant updates to the css files during devs. They are huge, sharded, and load with some sort of dependency approach where a couple async in late and the dom takes ages to paint or stalls.
Should be fine once the updates settle and css can cache for long periods.
I dont notice it on my desktop or iP7 at all, but have bought one of those 7" Aldi Andriod tablets and the combo of weak ass wifi chip and slow processor speed reveals the slow paint after every refresh.
I'm guessing that down your way you don't enjoy the same phat pipe ftth NBN I do and/or its an older GTab.
My win phone and 5yo iPad is also revealing this to a lessor extent with their older process speeds. There is no doubt that the iP7 SoC approach totally minces sophisticated js/css layouts at a rate of knots - and is not representative of the other 80% experience.
Can you clarify what you mean with screen grab from other theme pls.
Im presuming you mean Mark Forums Read as one of the items in the 'Forum' submenu which is global on the 1.1 theme and now is only active when within that group.
Is there any one besides myself who actually likes the new category navigation that shows more of what is on offer?
A big objective is to reveal more of the topics with more intuitive traditional navigation for new members.
I personally find the over reliance on active topics as gateway to the forums drives a bit of a filter bubble of our own making. It is (imo) a Power User tool that has most value once one has past muster as committed community member. But any new member just sees a mountain of 'casual conversation' and they are late to the party - its not that inviting.
It was frequent when the new theme was first available then settled down to only happen occassionally. It's been more frequent again lately, presumably as you have been making a flurry of changes that mean stuff isn't in cache.
I can see what you are getting at. People contributing to this thread are unlikely to be the audience that you are thinking of in this respect. I think that as a new member i looked at things forum by forum. Active topics/new posts probably came with venturing into convo.
I think you are on the right track to try to make the various individual forums more visible for new/casual users. I'm not sure that the current small grey writing achieves this as much as you want but it's a step in that direction.
