Hi again - Just wondering if anyone can comment on whether NYD is typically a super-hectic day on the slopes (and roads?)

This is my changeover day from Nozawa Onsen to Shiga Kogen, so I'm thinking it could be a good opportunity to stop by in Madarao or somewhere else. I have the option to ski Nozawa, anywhere else locally or just head to the hotel in Shiga K (have car).

I'm quite a fan of a low key NYE and TBH my son aged 11 won't be able to stay up late anyway. So I'm hoping NYD could be a great opportunity for some uncrowded first tracks :)

While I'm at it, ideas on an estimated driving time from Shiga to Nagano station on Sat Jan 4th, to pick up a train to Tokyo at 17:00 would also be useful - Is this going to be the equivalent of trying to get out of Perisher on a school holiday saturday in a storm at 17:00? For all I know this could be Japan's busiest day on the roads, but I hope not!

Something to consider. If the damaged shinkansens don't return to service before NYE . Just hopping on your desired train may be a bit more difficult than anticipate. Ie it will be madness.
*i've had this happen to me twice. Over CNY.

You could ski at Ryuo or Kijimadaira on the way from Nozawa to Shiga Kogen. They are both about half way between the two.

Go somewhere east facing and get up there early. Myoko (AK) open the gondola about 1 hour before sunrise, no ticket required. It is pretty special wacthing the sunrise over Madarao and Shiga.

Is this new? I am sure it was free 1/1/18, but I could be mis-remembering a very cheap ticket as a free ticket. It was only for 1 ride up, not a day pass

They probably weren't checking tickets. Never heard of it being free.

Can you bring skis on the gondola at that time? Would be fun to ski down after watching sunrise

I will be staying at Suginohara in February, definitely would drive up there and check it out I think
