Amazing scenes from my weather station in Queenstown today…not technically valid as monitor sits in direct sun but very warm and inviting out there today

Anyone thoughts on Southern lakes versus MacKenzie for tomorrow nights snow? Looks like it might hit more from the S, SE and favour further north? Will there still be decent accumulation in southern lakes?? Would ohau cop the S, SE better than say wanaka region?

That sort of system tends to favour Mackenzie and canterbury. Ohau is probably on the edge of it. Dobson and roundhill will likely get more. Hutt more still but good luck with the sheeple up there when the weather clears.

Remarks today
20210803_104430.jpg

Also saw Blake Marshall shredding around here this morning. Watched him send it over some gnarly rock, ice, and tussock right below us from the lift!
If I'm honest the cover isn't great here.
Just adds a bit of spice

Blake Marshall put a clip of me on a Hutt pow day on his Instagram story and said I looked like a panda. Been thinking about some new goggs since he said that

Dobson was epic today. No queues 25cm of the good dry stuff and sun out.

Looks so nice!!! We thought about a dash up there but that didn't eventuate....
Looks like the wind had a good go at it, but still so jealous!
Dobo is so often closed the day after significant storms which is in some ways good because you can hit somewhere else then go there next day for freshies, but it often gets pounded by wind by the time you get there

It definitely had some wind but it was light enough snow that it was easy to smash through it.

was definitely a better option than Hutt today. Looking real good for next week now :)

Back to ohau today

Sun and/or Wind crust on many aspects but found this little zone still riding very well

Nice! I was heading there today, looked a bit cloudy, went to round hill instead and it was flat light and the heritage was closed. you have just proved I made the wrong decision :)

Only the directly south facing slopes were any good tbh and don't think roundhill has any? In tekapo now wondering if we'll see snow on the ground here soon :)

For sure. You might be there for a few days :)

we were planning to get out for an overnight tour near tekapo this weekend but decided to head home and hunker down with a lot of firewood

Mt Dobson closed today.
We should be in our hire car on our way to Fairlie from CHC for 2 days at Dobson. Looks like good snow on the way. I have noticed its been closed quite often lately. If we get to go again I dont think I will be buying tickets in advance.

Wind is often the problem there. It is pretty high elevation ~1700m to ~2100m
But I think you'll find if they are closed for the day and you have prepaid tickets you can use them another day

It’s a good way to get cheap passes but maybe best to buy them 3 or 4 days in advance once there’s a good weather forecast. Crowd closures are a new thing there this season. Although the capacity is limited by car parks so the queues are still way smaller than somewhere like hutt.

Dobo had 30-40cm so far and still snowing. Won't be open until Tuesday. Ohau 5-15cm and no doubt they will be open tomorrow because they hardly ever close. Good Monday/Tuesday combo lined up :)

The North Island is really bearing the brunt of it today. Multiple road closures across central areas of the island and flurries to near sea level around Wellington and Wairarapa. Even the Coromandel Ranges across the Hauraki Gulf from downtown Auckland have received a dusting.

Yeh, you can see it running up the east coast of the south island on that animated satellite imagery, pretty much perfect for snow on the north island.

Lambing is underway across the North Island. Going to be a tough ask for a newborn to survive heavy wet snow. Fortunately milder weather moves in fairly quickly tomorrow.
