A few pics from yesterday arvo.
Was a spare Hagglund so we went for a tourist drive out to Penney Bay.
Views of the bay, Robinsons ridge and the Peterson glacier.
Light wasn't the best but not a breathe of wind.

Rule of thumb 1 kt is1kg of force.
So anything up around 70kg , that's not tied down , will be getting pushed around.
People included.
Wondering how the BOM observer managed launching the 10pm balloon.

Managed a last minute trip out to the Browning Peninsula on the weekend.
Vanderford Glacier , full moon and possibly the most intense cold I have ever experienced was indelibly etched into my soul.
More pics later when I sort thru the Go Pro and big camera.
Here's a couple of quick shots off the phone.

Threading the needle of cloud and high wind at this time of year. Looks like some breaks ahead though. I'm not doing this flight, but you'll be in good hands. Enjoy readjustment to the real world. Loved the TR - looking fwd to your next one next year ;)
Got the ice in my veins for sure.
Sights now set on Macca & Mawson ......

Welcome back to reality mate:) did the missus fly down?
Thx. and No.
Impossible plan in advance with any confidence.
Headed up to Q next week for a couple of weeks.
Was watching the changing forecasts ping on my phone and looking at the wx obs as I was paddling along the Murray with the missus and kids. Gusting 51kts and <1000m visibility in blowing snow early, but dropped off later improving the vis. They threaded the needle just nicely. See you in October :)
yep.
was rather nasty when we got up there around 1430.
Snowbird eta around 1600, I was sceptical tho the viz was good.
winds abated while I stood there waiting outside, for my last fix of extreme and endurance ....
great job by the BOM forecasters and Skytraders experience to pull the trigger.

How far north are you coming? Summer this time around has been pretty mild compared to past years. It's actually quite bearable ATM and is always good drinking weather:cheers:

Brisvegas & Straddie - maybe a side trip up to Sunny coast.
Mrs nfip badly twisted her ankle and foot, so planned bushwalks are on hold pending the healing process.

the other replied "they still are" ....

I lmuch prefer sweet fresh pineapple more than City smoke, even if I have to wait a while to taste it.

So as not to derail the other Mont thread.
..Katabatic winds?
Yep.
Reverse sea breeze if you like.
Cold / heavy air pushing down hill.
More common and stronger over at Mawson I believe,
most days at Casey winds are worse in the mornings and abate in the afternoon.
Some days you can see a distinct line where the blowing snow stops settling out on the offshore islands.

All safe and well.
I have quite a few friends on there ......
This team of expeditioners have been down south since October 2019.
COVID prevented the Basslers (DC3's) travelling from Canada - Argentina - Antarctica,
then leap frogging around to our stations as per typical and transporting them from Davis / Mawson back to Casey fly out on the return / backload of the summer inbound flights last year.
Also quite a few have been onboard since they departed Casey end of January.
They where unable to leave the ship in Hobart due to COVID quarantine / isolation requirements.

I have an old VHS of a film a guy I know made in the 90's on a self funded climbing trip, he is in a tent with the voice over going, highest, driest, then the sound comes up and you hear the rain on the tent.

He mentions GW.

In Antarctica ?,
and comments in relation to observed climate trends and confirmed by ongoing scientific studies ?

fwiw I swear it rained that night last summer ,
not for long and not real hard ..... but enough to wake me with that familiar sound but I should not be hearing in that location.
