Maybe too much snow for one tourist.

Search continues for Australian missing in Japan

By North Asia correspondent Mark Willacy

Posted 2 hours 24 minutes ago

Police on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido are searching for an Australian man who disappeared from a ski resort more than 48 hours ago.

The 27-year-old Brisbane man was reported missing after spending Thursday evening in a popular bar in the Japanese ski resort of Niseko in Hokkaido.

The man was part of a group of nine Australian tourists staying in a hotel 10-15 minutes' walk from the bar.

Locals reported heavy snow on the night he went missing.

The ABC has been told 40 police, firefighters and volunteers have carried out searches in the area but no trace of the Australian has been found.

The search is expected to resume at first light and the man's father is scheduled to arrive in Japan later in the day.

The resort town is popular with Australian skiers and snowboarders.

I believe they are trying to locate his position through his mobile. Not much luck yet though. Hope this has a happy ending but things aren't looking good.

Sounds odd to me....unless he was heavily intoxicated and fallen, knocked himself out, snow has covered him.

    or

depending what time he left the bar decided to go night skiing and get a few runs in. Went into the trees, hit a tree and knocked himself out.

I am actually surprised you dont hear of any fatalities with what they allow in night skiing. Go at your own risk as far as you want into the trees. I made sure wife and I had transiever on us at night, not for avi purpose, but if she or I was to hit a tree night skiing when we were deep in them, at least you could locate them if they were knocked out. Otherwise it would almost be impossile to find them when the snow is so deep and carp all light.

    Anyways...hope they find the guy.

He left the bar (Wild Bills) at about 1:30am so defintitely wasn't out night skiing. He was staying down near Gentem restaurant area which is a fair walk. If he did fall over unconsious somewhere then we've definitely had enough snow to completely cover him. I really hope he is ok but it's not looking good.

I remember last year I was night boarding when I thought I heard a female yelling out in the tree line about 30 minutes before close but after a sweep there was no one about. Had my ears pinned in the location of where the sound came from but it appeared that the party was OK and had moved on. It can be dangerous only due to the lack of people about.

Saw that headline at Sydney airport just arriving back. First thought it was someone lost in the backcountry after some of the recent big storms. Has been strong winds and plenty of snow in Aomori region this last week. But no, should have guessed it was Niseko and someone getting lost after a big night out.

    Yea, this is awful [IMG]

Still no sign of him, and that's the latest as of now.

Saw search & rescue crews a few times in the village, and they have been checking many big snow drifts and piles around the village with long thin poles.

    It does not look good.

Not surprising after the recent snow falls. Any news on the Aus guy missing? Surely they would have found him by now? Otherwise might have to wait until spring now...which aint that far away.

There have been some wicked pockets of powder snow lately - we have hit some genuine (wind-driven) face shots, and some great powder runs through the Annaupri bowls and around upper Hanazono.

    Sweeeet.

It's actually not my photo guys, it's from a staff member at Niseko Village. I had to work that day much to my disgust but I just wanted to let people know how good it's been.

Niseko Annupuri just cracked 4.5m of snowdepth today. Pretty good in a season of below average snowfalls!

Big storm last night in Niseko with more than 40cm falling and massive drift development. Going to be deep up there today!

Niseko starts winding down areas of the mountain and they still have 1.5m at the bottom and 3.5+ at the top. Crazy...

It's really, really quiet here currently. Lift companies will just be losing money if they don't scale back. Been great the last week or so though. The last week of March had what many here considered some of the best conditions of the whole season and best of all we barely had to share them with anyone!

The amount of resorts that stay open after March 31st is still amazing to me. Snow or no snow it really doesnt make sense to have 300 plus resorts still trying to get a small piece of the pie.

On or around april 3rd Japanese students go back to school. usally on a Friday as well. Thus parents dont want to drag the kids on a holiday.

Around the second week of april club sports at school ramp up and have various tournments warming up for the big matches in may and june. Again cant cart the kids off.

New cycle of workers enter their companies in Japan. Again hard to grab those young people at that time.

The Sakura season starts and people love those darn flowers here.

The mountain passes start to open and people can snow hike or get into low elevations. Fuji is open now.

So although there is snow it isnt always about the snow.
