those Rusutsu runs with 20 cm of new are truly magic, if it's untracked
chopped up later is not so much fun , boarding at least.

smitty484, its the Olympus uTough-6010 still dig camera in video mode. Water & shock proof and apparently works well in the cold. We had our you beaut JVC video camera but it wouldn't focus, maybe due to the cold, or maybe due to user error.
The +1 did a good job i thought.

    How bout another pic.

    Great Pics!

Does anybody know if the lifts spun at Iwanai this year? (Go Native?)

Anyone do a day there, if so, how as it? They must have had some massive accumulation there this season.

Really want to do a day there sometime.

If staying in either one of those towns you would probably need to hire a car. For Kutchan I would advise the following hotel/onsen http://hotel-youtei.jp/index.html
Not sure about anything in Niseko Town but I'll do a search later.
If you wanted to book that hotel I can help you get it done.

Nope, got to the rope of the avalanche boundary but never crossed it. I'll duck a rope now and then but not in areas like that.

anyone know if they have a bumps course set up at any of the resorts there - jnr LTB would like to get some training in if possible??

Did a little afternoon ski up Iwaonupuri from Goshikionsen today and met up with Rabid K9 and his +1 quite coincidentally. Was a beautiful afternoon with some reasonable snow quality.

About 20 mins up from the car looking back down to Goshikionsen

Looking back over to Annupuri with a few tracks in the bowls above the onsen

Top of the first steep bit and Iwaonupuri appears

Didn't realise it at this stage but that's Rabid K9 whose just dropped the bowl

Rabid K9 with Annupuri in the background

And the smarter half whose on skis with Nitoannupuri in the background

Shot of Chisenupuri on the way back to Kutchan

Great day to be out in the backcountry and was good to meet up with some ski.com.au guys.

Thanks GN - just arrived home this morning after 24hrs straight travel, ironically almost missed flight out of Chitose due to heavy snow & closed roads yesterday.

Was a glorious day in the hills on Sunday, very hard leaving with fresh snow on Monday, trying to ward off the post-trip blues, after the honesty & helpfullness of the Japanese, arrived home to find some filthy pirate has drained our rainwater tank right under the noses of the housesitters!! In the relentless dry heat our summer, rainwater is worth more than fuel.

Plenty of photos from Sunday, will upload more in TR for overall trip but here's a couple of tasters...

Go Native in his adopted backyard, a fine one to adopt I would say!!

Rabid having a terrible day in the hills, different angle of line from GN's post above.

The arguably 'smarter one' showing West Aussies can rip in the snow as well...

Enjoy RR. We leave midnight on Wednesday so will be skiing by Friday. I know we all knock the forecasts on snow-forecast.com but I'm hoping it comes off cos it looks like good snowfalls from Friday over the weekend and cold!!!

Any gems, food tips, stashes you've found. PM's fine if locals don't want it broadcast. How are the "crowds" ? [IMG]

Have a great holiday LTB - hope the +1's back holds up!

I noticed in the weather thread that you are staying in the Vale - excellent choice. We stayed there in early Feb. Ski in, ski out, can walk to anywhere for dinner, and the onsen is to die for - you will hardly use your own shower after the first day!

Hope the snow and cold weather comes through.

Well back home today and I can honestly say that all the good stuff I've heard about Niseko is true. I've never seen anywhere snow like it and in late March when every one is packing up. Unbelievable! The only lift lines we copped were on Monday and that was because all the upper lifts were on wind hold and it was a public holiday and school holidays.

LTB you are in for a good time, yesterday morning it was puking and there is still so much base it's ridiculous! The Vale is a great place, we stayed directly across the road at Snow Crystal in the penthouse, needless to say we were happy campers. Good coffee at the bottom of your building. Randy from top shots was brewing up a storm but he packed up yesterday. Also good coffee at Sekka deli across the street. As for food, we didn't strike a bad meal in any of the Japanese places though the names of just about all of them escape me. The cafe next door to Sekka is great.

Good value and free internet. Wild bills has some very good Mexican food. My number one tip if it's on and if it's open is HIKE THE PEAK!

Niseko just keeps delivering the white stuff: http://tweetphoto.com/16522467

After 15 metres / 50 feet of snowfall since the lifts started, Niseko might have almost reached peak snowdepth for the season. Despite the resort being largely empty (and with some good discounts about), Niseko probably had more snowfall in March than some Australian resorts receive in an entire winter season.

Well GN gets a little carried away in The Bear Pit from time to time and gets given a time out. His nicer alter ego, Kutchanboy, then appears for awhile. The bad boy is back! [IMG]

Oh there's a fair group of us who live here year round. Plus quite a number of NZ'ers, Americans, Canadians and Poms. There's also some from Sweden, Denmark, Sth Africa and a smattering of other countries. Quite a little multicultural community we have here throughout the year.

Oh how I miss Niseko, a couple of swedes at the backpackers I stayed at made some sweet videos of their trip, can be seen here.

    http://vimeo.com/maxlarsson/videos/sort:date

On their last day they climbed Mt Yotei, was perfect conditions, bluebird day... Shame, it seems they don't have any footage of it on Vimeo.

From my own observations over the entire season from 31 Oct (first snow to village level) right through April I put it at over 15m at village level and over 18m at the top. Not too bad a season at all. Just went out today for a little backcountry on Iwaonupuri. Still plenty of snow left out there.

Really not sure. Japanese resorts don't seem to realise the marketing potential of the prodigious amounts of snow they receive and don't keep snowfall records.

The biggest snowfall year in Kutchan was 69/70 when they received a bit over 20m. Up high on the mountain that year they would have got close to 30m I'd think.

The conservative estimate is over 15 metres, but there are some estimates around 18 metres for the season.
GN reflects the local Niseko rule of dumpage; that the peaks typically get about 50% more than Kutchan.
I was there in January when the hill was smothered with 1.5 metres over four days.
