Last year we were cranking separate threads for both Niseko and Hakuba, it's a good idea as it can be get a bit hectic with info flying in everywhere in the general Japan thread.

The 2010 30 page Niseko thread is here. Have a look through, theres some good info in there.

I emailed the lodge a few days ago and told them thier camera is pointing towards the ground and not across the lower village as in the past, they are going to fix it when they open the lodge this week.

    Re: Niseko 2011

hey everyone got a few questions.
has anyone stayed at pension kanon. good/bad and do they have curfews like i have seen a few others have?
can anyone recommend a good guide to get a scope of the place? was looking at black diamond. also have have a few mates with me that have never ridden pow, so would be good if they could get a few tips while doing it.
and lastly onsens. looking forward to the experience but the boys are interested if you can have a beer in them. sounds like the perfect end to a day.
    thanks in advance guys

    Re: Niseko 2011

Stayed in pension Kanon around 10 years ago (the last time I was in Niseko). There were two places actually the pension and Kanon log - more of a cabin. In the pension village, can walk to lifts but easier to get town bus, Nice views of the forest. get used to cabbage for breakfast - but that seems pretty standard for Japan. No curfews that I can remember - we had some good nights at Hanks and had no dramas. Mixture of western and japanese rooms from what I remember - some rooms with lofts.

Beers are generally ok in onsens esp if they are outdoor ones - can vary though, so use a bit of common sense and follow the general onsen etiquite.

Yeah beer in onsens is normally ok but just don't be rowdy. The onsen is a place to relax not party [IMG]

Make sure you don't have too many beers before or during the onsen or when you get out you may be feel sheethouse like I did one time. [IMG]

You'll work out how to ride powder easily enough after a little trial and error.

Smitty, I think it's between Hot Shots cafe and NBS Ski hire shop, a bit above them.

Maybe a dumb question but is there night skiing at Annupuri? I've only ever done it at Hirafu, judging by the cam at night I guess there is? Heaps of lights!

Yep, they sure do and both times I've been there has been less people that Hirafu, great if your accommodation is down that way. I believe that Niseko Villege also has night skiing but I haven't tried that yet, hopefully I will check it out this year as we are staying there rather than Hirafu this time.

Where is the strawberry fields area? From what I can work out, its out Gate 5 at top of Hanzano then down through the trees back to Hanzano hooded quad. Is that right?

Thanks. And the bowls are out through the gates, traverse a bit, then down and loop back to the lift? (I know that they don't all go back to the lift).

Yep, on a clear day you can follow others, I wouldn't recommend that you head out to locate the bowls on those normal days when there is little visibility. There will nearly always be someone in the lodge who can maybe show show you the way. The tracks out from the Annapuri Bowls can be a little tricky on a board, particularly over/around the creek.

That's a negative... Strawberry's is by the Hanozono Quad #1. There is a gate (Gates 6?) Skiers right of the lift there... in the trees skiers left of Silver Dream is Strawbs.

Annupuri Bowl is via Gate 1 and 2. Gate 1 starts you low in the trees, Gate 2 is a short hike then a traverse to get to the better stuff in the more open part of Annupuri Bowl. I think (?) you can get to the Back Bowls via the peak from there but some go over the top via the peak Gates King Lift #4.

    EDIT Nice map Donza [IMG]

    Ok, so thats:

    - Strawberrys: by the Hanozono Quad #1. There is a gate (Gates 6?) Skiers right of the lift there... in the trees skiers left of Silver Dream is Strawbs.

    - Annupuri Bowl is via Gate 1 and 2. Gate 1 starts you low in the trees, Gate 2 is a short hike then a traverse to get to the better stuff in the more open part of Annupuri Bowl

    - Back Bowls over the top via the peak Gates King Lift #4.

    Where goes G7 go?
    Where is blueberry fields then?
    What is the peak like?

G7: IIRC is a nice little natural half pipe like feature along the side of Annupuri .
Exiting down near the base ready to jump back on the Gondola - but my memory of all those bits I only headed to once are a bit mixed up...

Blueberry: Opposite side to Strawberries - tree's are tighter. #3bear cubs favourite.

The Peak: A big walk up. But something like this:

Do you mean opposite side of the Hanozono Quad? Or opposite side of the resort (so Annupuri side)?

    Opposite side of the run.
If you are coming down from Grand Hirafu then just after the FLAT spot (ya will know it when ya get there - damn!)
as you approach the top of the Hanazono Quad you decide - straight ahead for red piste, right/out the gate for strawberries, left to the black, or left into the tree's for blueberries.

Skiers left of 'stairway to heaven' red piste, skiers right of 'legend of shinya' black piste, and IIRC bit less tight through the tree's from the black than from the red.
Tight tree's not my favourite thing so I didn't head there often, usually begrudgingly following one of the kids. I much rather strawberries all chopped up than fresh blueberries [IMG]

I'd rather Rob Roys or waterfall.
