The Aussie barista and his dog were there last season. I think he said he lives in Otaru the rest of the year.

Does look nice doesn't it. Feb this year I saw way too much of it, for Niseko standards anyway. The year before I saw the sun for about 2 hours in 15 days, versus 7 days out of 15.

We were in Hokkaido for nearly four weeks up to 15 January, actually in Niseko Jan 5 - 15, and I never thought I would say it but I just wished for one bluebird day. Never saw the sun once! Was crazy.........

Bluebird days means people can see all the good spots you've been skiing, and can follow you around easier. Stuff that I dont care if it's snowing its tits off the whole time i'm there.

Had 9 days in Niseko in Feb over the Chinese new year - I hear you about having too many bluebirds when you are hoping for deep pow days..

I ski Perisher if I want the tan. My 14 days in Niseko last January saw powder every day. The sun came out as the bus left on the last day. Winter magic. I just love the place.

Coming up to our 6th trip back in early Feb and every day we have had fresh tracks....even on blue bird days. You just need to know where to go, but the knowledge is reluctantly shared despite many of the shared experiences on this forum.

Happy to share the love at the time if you're with us, but I can't bring myself to offer any more than that.

    I love the place too.

You reminded me of a guide that said he preferred working in stormy weather with bad vis so that the customer felt that they were lucky having a guide. It is much easier to impress when no one can see anything.

Whats the feeling on the ground for the number of expected visitors to Niseko this season? are the accommodation bookings still down?

That's what I'm hearing too. However if you look at the crew list on SJ most people seem headed for Hokkaido rather than Honshu (the opposite of here) so not absolutely sure. Hokkaido tends to rely on a lot of bookings from elsewhere in Asia so that might be telling.

keep in mind part of the road near there is heated!

heavy snow this morning - i would call it moderate now. there are lots of hints around town (all completely heresay) that bookings are substantially down on last year (granted it was apparently the busiest yet)

You got that right..........we got a peak of it for 15 mins in January when we were there. It was our last day.... enough to take a few pics and then it was gone!

Looks like lots of people are taking advantage of the clearer weather this morning. Lucky buggers [IMG]

Hey, has anyone heard much about the World Downhill Championships being on on Niseko
from March 4?People will be staying at Hilton NV. 700 competitors plus guests presumably.
We normally go 1st week of March cause of work commitments plus its a bit quieter on the hill and around the village.
Maybe not so quiet with al those extra people!

off to Niseko in Feb, staying at Owashi from 7th-20th, pretty keen to hit the back country. I was there 4 years ago, and we had a guide take us for a slide down the back country off the peak, but I was only 14 back then and am pretty hazy on the whole thing. Is it easy to find your way around the BC and not get lost? I don't want to end up having to hunker down in a cave for the night, if possible.

I don't think you really need a BC guide again, just look at that maps and talk to people about it. All gates are great fun and pretty mellow.

looks like clouds have rolled back in and i'ts dumping again.. 190cm depth already is pretty great, this time last year there was around 30cm!

    It is amazing
The only time I've experienced something similar was a supercold dump at Courchevel about 12 years ago.

Sorry Ish, you don't get off that easy.

Back seat driving is a misnomer when it comes to skiing. Because you can't drive skis from the back of your boots! (dog dammit!!) A real friend would hit you (hard) with a ski pole every time to correct your ways.

You don't box from your heels. So don't ski from them either.

Ski like you fornicate, not like you defecate.

Improve or I will send someone around.

No worries. You should also hit them with your pole. I wasn't joking about that. Any real friend would beat the backseat out of a skiing buddy. They'll thank you for it in the end [hitting on the elbow hurts the most and doesn't harm any organs or large muscles].

Oh, and bad news for you: that drink that you like hot, it is spelt sake, and not pronounced saki. Solly.
