Niseko-based Peter Murphy Managing Director of SkiJapan.com is very excited about the reopening of the resort's gondola today.

"The new -eight seat Grand Hirafu Gondola has the double capacity and twice as fast as the original gondola it has replaced. This will provide a quicker and more comfortable ride, it will reduce morning bottlenecks and it offers quicker access, particularly on powder days, to ski or board iconic runs.â€

Hirafu Gondola is the first new lift to be built at Niseko. It replaces a slower, four-speed gondola and the new cabins will provide sensational views of Mt Annupuri, the Mt Fuji-looking Mt Yotei and the ski town of Hirafu.

This is definitely the start of a new era for what was once the domain of the powderhounds but now entices Australian families and lots of first-timers from other, nearby countries such as China, Singapore and Hong Kong.

"Niseko is becoming more family-friendly after the powder boom a decade ago when the powderhounds put Niseko on the map," said Anthony Trovatello a key member of SkiJapan.com's team based in Niseko.

"There's a special energy right now. A lot of people here are dedicated and want to support Japan. It is the best start to winter I've seen in the four years I've been here. The amount of snow and the snow quality is amazing.â€

Pics or vid please of the serious pow skiing that we're missing out on.

Mostly over several trips we've been there in Jan but this time around, I have to wait 'til 2nd Feb and really, I'm NOT HAPPY.

Please keep us amused with heaps of pics and vid as soon as possible.

Hotsaki I've booked via skymark last few years, it's easy and cheap. The earlier you book the cheaper, so get on it!

Can't believe how good a start Niseko / Rusutsu are getting and I'm not going this year, f@@@@@rk!!! I'm already missing it so much.I'm considering incurring a divorce (our 3rd is due mid-January) and going for a quick1 week quick trip anyway.

And next season, I'm looking to go to the states (or CAN). The start of the season Japow v. States are chalk and cheese so far this year. No wonder Carveman has been lurking ;-)

Hi all, just a quick question. Why are the roofs in Niseko made flat ? Wouldn't it make more sense to build pitched roofs so the snow falls off.

Usually, you do just as well, if not better, going through the airline's website rather than through an agent.

I used skymark yesterday for a flight from narita to asahikawa, was great,
I just booked online using their site. Easy to use and accepts Aussie credit cards.

Can only book flights up to 2 months before you actually want to fly and the discount tickets go real quick, the site nearly crashes when you try to book with everyone else when the tickets go onsale at 9:30 (japan time)
