Some pics from The Peak opening.

Almost at the top. The Peak is approximately a 20min walk from the top lift and the terrain it accesses is worth every step.

Looks like the slope under the cornice above Jacksons.

A bit different from back in 1990 when everyone skied back down the trail groomed for the walk up.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for you guys that are going this season.

BUT, f@rk this is f@rked! I have been 3 of the last 6 f@rking seasons, and every other year that I didn't go shapes up as being legendary, I turn up and its ho-hum (which is still awesome but I wanna get smashed!).

Heading stateside Feb 13, don't go if you want epic powder dumpage during that time.

Hi all! I joined the forums to ask a question in this thread :)

My partner and I are thinking of going to Niseko (and poss Rusutsu) this March. We are kiwis who have only boarded in New Zealand and are wondering what the conditions are like! I know amazing, pure powder etc, but my main question is about all the snowing. We boarded here whilst it was snowing and it was horrible, as you couldn't see a thing and it stuck all over your goggles. How do you manage to board in Japan whilst snowing? Is it different there as I never see anyone complaining about having to board in snow...

Also, have heard different things about gear. Can we use our own boards or do we need specific powder boards? I have a Ride Promise, and my other half has a Ride Antic.

Thanks for any help!!! The pictures look just delicious. Never get powder days on ruapehu, usually packed groomed runs which get either icy or slushy by days end....

As far as conditions in Niseko are concerned if you don't like skiing while it is snowing then you may be out of luck, although March will generally have more fine days than February. What you need is a good pair of goggles and preferably also a spare pair if you fill one with snow. Riding in snowy conditions in Japan is however much easier than in NZ because of course there are trees (which will be a new experience for you) which give you a much better read of terrain. You can also ride quite extensive terrain at night if you feel like it and the lights highlight the terrain very well even in flat light.

Can't help you with the board gear. There will be others who will have an idea.

What size are your snowboards?.... I ride pretty much the same board in Japan as I do downunder..Heinz is correct about the goggles....a good two pairs will suffice. Also nowhere is worse in a blizzard than ruapehu.

According to the avy report there appears to have been an avalanche in the backbowls yesterday.

"There has been an avalanche in the Backbowl yesterday."

I remember reading a month or so ago about a new 'niseko rules map' but I can't seem to find it. The daily avalanche reports often refers to it and I think it would be very helpful to have, has anyone found it..?

    Cheers.

GN, can you please shed some light on today's avalanche report

"...Traversing below the cornice areas around coordinate E6F5 is very dangerous. Stay away!"

Are they referring to the cornice above the Annupuri bowl or the one over at Jacksons or somewhere else?

Warhol, my understanding is it's the annapuri bowl cornice out of gate 2 (the top one out of annapuri). The coordinates given refer to the niseko rules map that GN posted the link to above.

Thanks for this. I couldn't see any reference point but now it makes sense.

Makes me wonder if patrol would ever release the cornice. It must get huge by season's end.

It can be an imposing site looking up from the trees below.

This is killing me! Not only am I an ACO devotee who attends 3 concerts a year but I'm a massive Radiohead fan as well. And for $30!!! Wish I could be there this year. Anyway, I'm looking forward to Noz in Feb but all these pow pics of Nis are doing my head in.
