Just doing some more research for our trip coming up in just over a month, and found a ski school in hirafu ( the official grand hirafu ski school), that has a dedicated kids area. This is it's 2nd season in operation. Anyone have any feedback on it for the younger kids? Was going to go NBS, but like the idea of the younger kids being separated and having magic carpet. My kids are 6 and nearly 4.

Ohhh!!! Looks like they have constructed something new between the Gondola and the Holiday Pair lift! I didn't notice it last season, and haven't been back this season. Separate facilities for small children who are beginners is a great idea.

FYI they have an area that's separate with a carpet, mini gates, beginner park etc at Hanazono, and they have always had a very small magic carpet in an enclosed area just below the two King Pair lifts for the littlies lessons.

Thanks mamabear :), and thanks for posting link (it's a bit painful in the phone). I likes the idea of the setup over at Hanazono, but the travel over and back each day is a bit painful, especially since the kids really won't be able to ski it yet. I know proski set up a ski school too, but I think it's a seperate one as well. Your sin works over there doesn't he? If you have any more info, feel free to pm me, it's tough trying to get the right place since my boy who has seperation issues, and a slight language delay, and he is a cheeky stubborn thing (but so darn cute, ESP when today he was on his skis in the lounge practicing his jumps!!), I just want to get him in the right place so I'm not hearing mummy mummy from the top of the hill!!

    No problem StuckinQld.
    'my sin'
[IMG]. Love it!! So apt even if it's a typo.
But no he's not there yet, was supposed to be but that all fell through.
He would be great with your son though - very patient and understanding of individual differences.

Can I recommend you request an appropriate instructor for your son from the start? Often the tots beginner instructors are the least qualified and least experienced (not always), and the chances you stumble upon one that can adapt to your sons needs is reduced. If you tell the ski school what you want and why they will probably have one or two instructors that jump to mind immediately. And don't be afraid to go back to them if it's not working and request someone else. I'd also recommend private lessons, maybe for the two of them at your sons pace.

Hehe, your sin! Yes, a Freudian typo maybe? Thanks for your suggestions, some good approaches there to consider.

Home now. 2.5 metres of snow in two weeks. Leg sore but happy. My daughter is still there, waiting for the dump later this week.

Me too, waiting for this dump! It is nice out in the sunshine though we are quite happy now for the weather to come in. It is funny how spoilt we get here and say the snow is not great but if we were at home it would of been superb [IMG]

One of the gun boarders in my daughter's crew busted a collarbone today landing a jump badly. A few days ago he would have probably landed in powder.

    Looks like another sunny day!

Anybody see anything on the horizon? Looking pretty bland on the old snow-forecast.

WC, I have a belief system that does not include Haks. It works really well for me. I would suggest that others only try it at their own risk.

If you use the same thinking as the boys are going by on the Japanese weather thread then we are in for at least 1.5m of snow from Friday through to Monday. They times it by about 5.

Doesn't work like that in Hokkaido because the "lake effect" is not as strong in Hokkaido.

    Hey guys,

Just read this thread to do some research for an upcoming trip.

Webberchoked looked like you had an amazing experience.

Going to Furano for 3 days and the Niseko area for 8.
Theres just two of us, and we are intermediate boarders without that much experience. This will be our first time in Japan.

Read most of Go Natives advice about which gates to choose so its obvious which was to go and so you don't get stuck hiking uphill in deep pow back to the lifts and printed off the map showing gates.

Any recommendations to help us find some not too tracked up runs? Anyone have experience or recommendations with a guide company?
We don't have av beacons and probably don't have the skill to go too backcountry anyway, more looking off piste inbounds or sidecountry.

Also looking at hitting up Moiwa and Rusutsu. Any advice on transport to Rusutsu and any other local mountains would be great. The Mowia bus information is pretty good in english, so I shouldn't have too many dramas there.

I'll be in Niseko from the 12th till the 20th of Feb, so if anyone wants to catch up for a drink and some ramen let me know :)

All tips and advice about where to go, what to eat, etc etc very welcome.

Hey Brendan we are in niseko for our 3rd time 15th to 27th. There are 6 of us (no boarders though) we are doing a couple of days at rutusu and cat skiing + backcountry. If you want to catch up let us know we are staying in the lower village.

Check out the guys at Black Diamond. They do a daily "Powder Hunter" tour that will get to the gates, peak and back bowls on Annupuri or over to Rusutsu if the weather is crap (but Rusutsu trees usually still good). You can bus there too but slow and limited trips.

You can catch the Donan bus to Rusutsu from the bus stop next to the Seico Mart in Hirafu, it departs at 8:30am and the return bus departs Rusutsu at 4:30pm. Trip takes about an hour and its 1000 yen each way.

Get a 6 hour pass and head to Mt Isola when you get there.

But it's a terrible place so don't go there [IMG].

    Thanks for all the replies.

Bowralzak, you sound like your crew has a bit of experience under your belt. I'd be very keen for to catch up but wouldn't want to slow you down, which i'm sure we would if the terrain gets interesting for us. But a quick tour around Niseko if you get a chance would be hugely appreciated and i'm happy to shout the first round :)

Also, would you be keen on splitting a hire car to get to Rusutsu. I'm happy to be an international permit, and if there is 8 of us it would work out pretty cheap. Niseko auto hires vans for 11,500 yen a day + fuel. 8 x 2000 yen bus tickets is 16000. So i'm sure the overall cost would be similar, but we could get there early for the first lifts and have flexibility when we come back? I think we are staying in the upper villiage, Lodge Koropokkuru.

Thanks Sourmash, I've only heard good reports from black diamond now. Might be good to get an early tour so we know where to go for the rest of the trip.

Toxteth, thanks for the information about the Donan bus! Its all images on their website and all japanese obviously so I couldn't translate it. Despite this and all the above Rusustu talk... you have confirmed is definitely not a place to go, I will steer well clear ;)

Webber stop having so much fun, i'm getting highly jealous.

I'd recommend Black Diamond or one of the day trip type buses for Rusutsu. I went last week on Donan. The bus was 30 mins late, and by the time we get to the west side of the mountain where the hotels are and then basically 3 gondolas to the top of Mt Isola, the fresh ain't fresh any more.

Yep, that's exactly what I did. Did a solo tour with BD and then drove in mates hire car the next time. We then had the inside on where the (unsigned in english) closest car park was and more importantly how to tackle some of the tricky run outs from the trees when everything is covered in fresh. Hirafu can be closed up top, gloomy, windy and crowded while you can still have blast at Rusutsu, see some footage below...

    Howdy kids,

Has anyone used the ski school in Niseko Village at the Hilton? We have a couple of beginner boarders who are hoping to not have to wander back to Hirafu for their classes. Anyone got any experience or anecdotes they can share?

    Muchas gracias!!!!

We had a private lesson for our son who came from NAC - He was kiwi, so only minor language challenge. I think them and a few others that aren't tied to the group lessons will meet you anywhere in Hirafu area as long as the terrain is suitable for level they are teaching. Probably not the cheapest, but split between two it may be a good way to get started.

Undies, you will find that the NVSS team is awesome I think! More of the staff are here every season, if not year round so you don't get that young punk doesn't give a shit attitude that you find in some of the other ski schools that are majority foreign staff in my opinion.

Niseko Village is also a great area to learn, less people compared to Hirafu, good areas to learn on and some of Niseko's best terrain to progress to.

I may have sleep through the earthquake but was woken up by the ski patrol blasting from 5:30 until about 7:00, sounds like they have had a busy morning.

No rain here (that I've noticed), top of mountain must have got between 20-40 since yesterday. Over knee deep on some side pistes & closeby trees. Boot deep on some pistes. Avi warning against OOB at top chair.

Hirafu on shut down today. We shuttled to Hanazono in the afternoon (only 1 and 2 lifts were running) and played around there for a few hours but tracked out quickly. Waterfall gate offered some fresh tracks on the way back.

30cm to 40cm fresh up the top would be a minimum at my guess.

Anyone know how much of rusutsu was open today? Good day at niseko, not much open so what was open got tracked out quick but plenty to keep us entertained.

All of it, barely any wind either.
This is an artists impression of how it looked.
