I'd be going to Annu, the chair will still be running, or like I said head to Chisenupuri. You dont need a car to get to Annu so get over yourself.

in that case I suppose Moiwa is worth a look.
PB did exactly that a couple of weeks ago. They had fun, fairly cruisey, reminded him of Iwatake. It's better than standing in a 20 minute queue!

    And that's a good thing!
No one there consistently leads to no lifts running anymore.
If you can jag a day where it feels like no one is there - awesome, but really no one there - ever...that's a death sentence.

    Could be a good thing.
PB and crew gave a guy a lift back to Hirafu, he had gone exploring, got a bit lost, felt out of his depth but pushed on (solo) and ended up at Moiwa, no idea how to get back so asked the first Aussie accent he heard.

Let it loose, let it be average

That specks is Mrs TW last year.Only speck around.
I had to wait a while, had time to do my nails in truth. Had to take off my mighty Black Diamond mittens. Moiwa is actually freaking something special for those who need simple things, like safe powder, empty green runs. Long may the lifts run, just beware of the creek.

Wiki assures me lemmings are rodents, not mustelids, so I can end the working week complete.

epic day at Rusutsu. The report was calling 50 cents, certainly felt like it.

For those asking about Moiwa on bad weather days, don't bother if its windy. Went there yesterday and the quad was closed, the main double closed soon after we arrived and only the bunny lift was open.

Rusutsu is probably a better option. Lifts were open all day there today, whereas from what i heard the Niseko high lifts all closed around lunch. In saying that Rusutsu was completely closed yesterday because of the wind.

Never experienced so much wind in Niseko. It is seriously wild out there right now.

Well we tried to head over to Moiwa today from the top lift at Hirafu but ended up in one of the back bowls that took us down to Annupuri base. Wind picked up so couldn't get back to the summit, then the Gondola closed not long after.

Jumbo Quad was the only chair going for the afternoon, so we made the most of what was open.

We were going to bus it to Moiwa tomorrow but from the above advice that might not be the best choice given the wind.

Just putting it out there - will be in Niseko from this sunday (10-2) to Friday 15th and might be looking for back country partners depending on conditions. Will be skiing with the family most of the time who are probably not that way inclined. Will bring my skins and av gear just in case. Staying at Shizenkan lodge in Hirafu. Maybe see y'all out on the hill.

We stayed at NV (1-3Feb) and found the buses full of people fom Annupuri, because of the wind & lift closures.
When we departed Chitose (13:00 7Feb) in the 'blizzard' the aircraft took a couple of big hits on the way up. Thought there may have been some risk of CTS closing later in the day.
Tokyo landing was also nasty (very windy swinging the AC on touchdown).

30cm fresh overnight. Weather was still pretty wild in the morning and the top two gates stayed shut. Snowed for most of the afternoon, but has cleared up now.

Those are Clivia Texy. I'm extremely proud of the younuns.
It may be a metaphor, though, if thats' a reference to pics of Clivia being better than nothing, but mainly it was a reference , perhaps an allusion? to a post re GN, who has gone silent after being quite voluble.

    Hi All
Getting very close now (only couple days) before my first trip. Thanks to all for the wealth of info on this forum, I think I have read nearly everything on it (great info and appreciated).
I have a question. Where/How do you find out about the snow conditions/Avalanche reports while in the village. The snow reports seam to come out about mid morning, so how do you get early info, Is there a site you look up.

    Cheers Hatto

Any clues on crowds for late Feb? Should we be expecting things to be tracked out by 10am and therefore need to head out the gates? (If so, am grabbing me a guide and some gear). Or might we be at the slowing of the season, and able to snag some quieter days?

Wasn't going to take snowshoes, but if we be heading out the gates, might as well.

It will be quieter than now for sure, you'll find the crowds incrementally decrease from Chinese NY
No need for snow shoes out the gates.. The gates you hike from will either have a groomer track, or boot pack.
The other gates are situated at the top of the area.
Don't be scared by the gates, just be aware. Some areas are sketchier than others... PM me if you want some more info.

Hi donza, I would classify myself as a novice when it comes to BC, would you consider gate 2 be one of the sketchier ones when opened. I never duck ropes but always get nervous when reading those signs.

Gate 2 is one of the sketchier in that you have a icy little hike (~5 mins) out of the gate and are strapping in (assuming you're on a board) on a crusty face, then are required to traverse on the crusty face around a bit to get the good snow (a nightmare for goofy footers). That's about as sketchy as it gets. After that you won't go wrong when you drop into the bowl as you'll hit the creek and ski out back to annapuri. There is also risk that everyone traversing around to the second bowl could trigger a slide.

If you've never been in the Niseko backcountry, I'd recommend getting on a guided tour with a reputable company for the day. this will get you familiar with the terrain and you can pick the guide's brain about what is and isn't on in the Niseko sidecountry. Blackdiamond do a good backbowls tour which will get you familiar with the sidecountry and they provide all the backcountry gear too (and you can hire it off them for the rest of your trip if you want). The other great thing with the blackdiamond backbowls tour is usually you end the day skiing off the back side of the mountain over to an onsen on the other side of the range, which you'd have no way getting home from if you didn't have them with a car to pick you up. The Onsen is great and even has floating trays to put your beer in!
