Thanks, I have 5 days in Niseko and am considering 1 or 1/2 day there (less crowds maybe?) to break things up..

Moiwa is a good day trip but there is a lot to discover at Hanazono/Hirafu/NV/Annupuri if you haven't been before and you only have 5 days.

The current weather this winer is 40 odd kph nonstop NW winds with moderate snowfalls
Moiwa is to windward so theres even less cover than Annupuri
So a good 1+m of bamboo showing plus lotsa wind effected hardpack

    Great overall

    That's terrible! :(

I made a huge snowman a couple of years back - he got yellow snowed and his head kicked off on NYE that year. I was sad enough about that - if I'd come out to my car window smashed I'd be ropable!

Most places off piste have a bit less base than usual for this time in January. Lots of sasa, small trees showing through where you normally only see the tops. I had a bit of bush bashing out of the gates recently in places that are normally filled in, plus traversing snow bridges over creeks with big holes in them. Gotta be careful out there.

    Moiwa today.

It's small but if you want a break from the crowds...

Took the opportunity of few people to really open it up on piste, I do love a nice carve. But the trees are easily accessed, nicely spaced, and you've got gate accessed BC as well.

    Hi,

I am currently at Niseko (staying at Owashi Lodge in Hirafu). I have 17 days of snowboarding left here and looking for anybody of similar skill level to snowboard with for a couple runs or a day or whatever. I am here on my own.

I have snowboarded 6 days in NZ at Mt Hutt and 8 days in Austria at Hopfgarten. Been here 3 days now and have started boarding black diamond runs with relative ease although never been in decent consistent powder like this before today. Got a board specifically for boarding in powder tonight and going to keep exploring powder tomorrow.

Would love to find someone with some expertise (even if it means paying) willing to go back country with me as I will not go off the map on my own for obvIous reasons. Also happy for a tag along if you dont know the mountain but are similar skill level (not back country!). happy to board with a skier/s. Any advise welcome. Does anyone know of mountain tours or anything of the like I could tag along on?

Also a couple people have recommended I go for a day trip or two to other mountains, what other mountains are accessible from here for just a day trip? and what would I find there that I havent got at Niseko, this resort seems pretty big so I cant imagine running out of places to explore. I see BoofHead recommended Moira.

Thanks for any responses, hoping I can find few friends to board with, it is good to be to be on my own to go at my own pace and wherever I like but also some company would be sweet!

If you are here for that long you might want to spend a day at Kiroro and Rusutsu as well as Moiwa.
    Cheers

dragged a guy out of the Moiwa creek this morning,
gang of Yo Bro powhunters zoomed by, a helping hand would of been nice,
Ski Patrol not interested , despite it was their 'safety' rope that tripped the guy up

Good job essjaywhy! More guys like you required. Given he would've been wet that is a pretty serious situation for hypothermia... He's lucky a quality individual like yourself happened by.

Nice out the side of Annapuri this morning. Still lots of sasa and sticks to dodge but the base is building, deep and dry.

No takers to board with me? Got stood up this morning. Changed boards tonight and going to go looking for groomed areas tomorrow with heaps of lumps/small jumps and probably hit up some proper jumps in arvo.
I haven`t even been outside of the hirafu and hanozono areas yet. Heaps still to explore :)

There are some real fwits here in town. The other night on the way home 2 guys were walking behind us and yelling at us to join them for a "beer and some billies" back at their place. When we declined they got progressively more abusive, with some fairly pointed threats being made about our welfare. Tools.

Meanwhile, back to the pow. Really cold morning, snow hammered down until lunchtime, just snowing lightly now. Had a great few hours in Mizuno no Sawa and other treed areas of Nis Village, knee deep at the top. The avalanche zone is now just another gate, no lecture in Japanese in the old gondola shed or special passes any more, so it is more popular. The top is wide enough to spread riders out but the run out down through the last gully gets a bit hectic. A few brightly coloured Scandinavian ol' mates tried bombing through and ended up in the creek.
Deep soft turns through the top trees elsewhere followed by powder bumps on lower Superstition or powder in the bottom gully. Nice.
Then a feed of Goyoza at Tozanken. Bliss

Constant snow is great, Hokkaido January quality, but we still lack about a metre and half of base for this time of year. Lots of those tree snakes down low that like grabbing your tips.

Sayonara Niseko. Now for a few weeks R&R before heading to Hakuba. Sounds like the fat skis will get benched and the Mantras might get a run.

Into Niseko tomorrow lunchtime. Beyond excited. So whats the word on the ground on snow depth off-piste? Sounds like the pesky bamboo grass stuff is almost covered? How much more is needed before its pure powder through the trees with nothing to snag yourself on? A metre? How Strawberry Fields skiing?

Most sasa grass is covered. Still a few branches lurking just under the snow to catch ankles. My mate caught 3 yesterday at Rusutsu. Generally pretty good, though.

Strab Fields was good this morning, although the whole mount is tracked out about an hour and a half after open. It's amazing watching the locusts descend.

Yeh some favourite runs such as Strawbs, Miharashi etc in recent years get so tracked each day that they are rutted out quickly even after the good regular snow we have been having. I just head for the gates either side of the mountain as quickly as I can, or a couple of sneaky little runs that don't get as much attention.
In the last week the sasa etc has filled in nicely, but the base is still building to get above the thickets of little whippy trees. The open glades are deeeeep though. Cold smoke deep.

It was the little twiggy trees that got me a few times, the Sasa not so much on the board. Went over the handle bars and face first into a pow cake a few times - there are usually not so many of the little blighters to dodge. But they are starting to vanish
unless you are getting a voucher/pre buy discount then no...it's no cheaper, just buy on the day. There is no real time saving like in Aus either.

Hey All. Me and four other friends will be getting a private transfer from Annupuri on Sunday 13 March to Sapporo airport to catch a 5pm plane (to arrive at 4pm). Any group of 2 interested in jumping on board with us so you still can have lunch and a morning of skiing/boarding before leaving? Cost would be roughly 5071 Yen PP . The times of the public shuttles (or public transport) aren't ideal if you have a flight leaving between 3 and 5.30pm.

Since todays a wash, just wondering if there are any walk in gyms (pay for the day) around annupuri. Also how much is it to use the hilton gym over in the village? And er, can you if youre not a guest?
