Yes. today has been frustrating to say the least. Its been snowing on and off since early morning, sometimes heavier, but the wind hold on most lifts has made it a day for mostly inside activities. We got out for a few hours in the morning and rode the chair that runs under Hirafu Gondola finding some nice deep fresh stuff off to the side but really not a very long ride. Ended up bailing for a long lunch at Abu Cha 2 on main street. Thinking night skiing might have some nice fresh to hit up before dinner.....

I'm touching down in Japan on 30 Jan. I've booked to go to naeba but the first week of feb is looking warm so I might head to Niseko instead.

I've been before so I'd like to do a couple days at Rusutsu - anyone know what time the bus runs from niseko to Rusutsu? This is the regular bus not the day trip bus. Or where I can find he timetable?

Any recommendations for accom in Rusutsu? I've got niseko sorted - likely heading back to full note.

There's an 8:30 and 15:30 Donan bus each day, book at the Welcome centre. It gets to Rusutsu an hour later, so if you go in the morning by the time it drops you at the Resort hotel and you get across to East Mt you will be behind a lot of skiers.
    I like Pension Lila Huset.

I've stayed at Full Note a couple of times, it's a great place. In Rusutsu I stayed at Pension Lilla Huset. No complaints other than the 'breakfast soup' they served up.

Yum - fish, omlette, rice, salad, miso soup.
Not so fond of the glass of custard with the seafood products in it (or natto).

I did one - was epic. Look back on the Niseko forum from 2011 you should find the details. Don't go with anyone else it was the real deal.

I think HBC operate their snowmobile tours at Black Diamond, just below Niseko Village (10-15 mins walk down the road from the bottom lifts or 20 minute drive from Hirafu).

Not too bad. First day here after three in Rusutsu. Spent most of the day on King 3 triple. A couple of times there was a 3 minute wait but mostly ski straight up to the turnstile. Plenty of shin/knee deep for everyone. Hana 3, there was no line at all. I try to avoid going 'down' once I am 'up' so can't comment on the Gondola. My son's comment was that there was a bit of a queue at the gondola in the afternoon but it moved quickly.

hi all, so im off next month to Niseko for the first time, The "plan is....to not ski groomed pistes" i have spare money so i was thinking getting a guide per day to go explore?
anyone used guides before? its just that because i will be going alone- i want to maximise skiing rather than stopping, feeling lost and and guessing where im going?....plus its not safe to ski alone.
that photo olgreg posted before is what im after!

or...is it easy to join a group- do i email companies and ask if they have any small groups who need numbers?
cheers all. Hope everyone is enjoying the snow

J_ski, hit up Adrian from thepowderguides.com
He or one of the guys on his team will take you out gates and finding secret stashes all day while not getting lost. Riding by yourself in some of those places solo Is a bad idea.......and that's in good weather

Mine was Darren at Niseko Photography. Used him three times in different areas.
It's not just about finding the right spot and riding safely, it's finding the right way out at the bottom. You can become seriously lost out the gates.
    Have fun@j_ski.

Was at Kiroro today (11am-3pm) and probably didn't see more than what seemed like 50 people on the mountain (excluding base area). The car park was almost empty. Be aware that all inbounds trees are now classified as out of bounds & that has implications for snow insurance cover.

I posted this in "Niseko 2015" by mistake, so I'll post here (Niseko 2016) too.

Some local media are reporting today Shimamaki-mura will start Mt.Kariba backcountry Cat tour from tomorrow (February 6th) to April 20th everyday. Simamaki-mura is a ski resort-less small village in Shiribeshi Subprefecture (Niseko is also in Shiribeshi).
    http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/hokkaido/news/20160204-OYTNT50013.html

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shimamaki,_Hokkaido

From the red circle(520m), the CAT goes up to East Kariba Mountain(=the blue circle = 1,318m). You can ski down to the red circle place(about 800m vertical drop) or hike up to Kariba Mountain(=the green circle =1,520m), then ski down to the red circle place(about 1,000m vertical drop).

This video was filmed on December 15th, and I assume January, February and early March are a lot better.

I'm in Niseko for the first time at the moment, and skiing is great! But it definitely lives up to the nickname 'Bali of the snow'!
