Mind you...that was Hano308...when there's no other competition, the punters will pay.

Ah yes, that would be the King Crab Ramen. Worth every penny (or yen).

I'll pay more attention to prices next trip. I'm pretty bad - just live it and worry about the costs later.

I reckon i paid 1100Y at Aizukogen Nango, but that was in the middle of nowhere. Then again, that place had a smoking hot American girl working in the kitchen, and a hotel that was a mini Cortina, so i'm not sure what was going on there.

The best katsucurry I had was believe it or not from a roadstop on the Tohoku Expressway somewhere around Shirakawa.

    cheers

    BDL :

"We used to take professional athletes, and our lodge and tours guests to Rankoshi Town's Chisenupuri ski area quite often. It was my go to place for the "real Japan hidden gem". Everyone always gave rave reviews about the entire experience. The snow, the scenery and the hot spring all made it extra special, so it was truly disappointing to hear that the lift was past it's limit and was closing forever two years ago...

We are proud to announce that JRT Trading (our parent company) was chosen to take over the lease from Rankoshi Town. While it will most definitely take a lot of hard work, funding and a number of years of research before we rebuild the lift, we will sincerely do all we can to help revitalize Rankoshi town through adventure tourism as soon as possible.

In the meantime, while the sustainability of a new lift is being decided, locals and foreigners will be able to ride our snow cats and experience Chisenupuri Powder once again. Stay tuned for more exciting news in the weeks to come!"

Heading for Niseko tomorrow for the second time! Will post further tips here.
One question - is it easy to do a day trip to Rusutsu and how exactly do you do it? (OK two questions)

lucky. it just started snowing again this afternoon.
assume without a car, you can book with a few bus companies. ive used big runs before. they have a little office next to the welcome center. the most difficult part is waking up on time and getting to the bus stop in the morning ;)

Easy and a good option when Niseko on wind hold. Most of Rusutsu's chairs are sheltered in valleys and rarely go on hold. This trip I'm driving there from Niseko and staying a night in Lake Toya which is about 20mins south of Ru.

    Options:
    1. Donan bus leaves Hirafu welcome centre 8:30am and returns 3:30pm, see http://www.nisekotourism.com/images/uploads/2013-14_Winter_CTS_Sapporo_Bus_Timetable_ENG_(1).pdf

    2. Get a private transfer $A80-$100 each way from memory, try Andy at Hokkaido travel http://www.hokkaidotravel.com.au/docs/index.php/Home.html

    3. Drive your hire car

Thanks - no hire car. Donan looks good. Returns 17.45 though which is even better.

Almost as efficient as staying home in Niseko. You'll save a whopping 10 minutes

turns out the other day that BD now claim Exclusive Full Access, with the right to tell my fellow skitourers to piss off

so please display the middle finger to BD,

they only have Commercial operating rights,

as Japan common law allows for free mountain access to independents.

based on the reputation of BD, i'm surprised that they're not claiming the whole of hokkaido is for their exclusive full access.

I wonder if this has just happened or BD hire this out to other operations? I cat skied with Noasc at Chisenupuri last season. As for BD nine months notice for an enquiry and multiple emails ignored. There excuse... in the junk mail folder. I'll definitely use alternatives like my last trip. I'm certainly raising the middle finger at BD

So many ski lesson companies available! Anyone have any tips? Looking at intermediate to advanced. Not powder specific just general red/black runs.

I'd like to add a big tip. If you have the time, take a train and visit Otaru. Great little town with awesome glass everything. Really good for presents and stuff for home. Lovely seafood and scenic canal, even in winter.

From today's Niseko Avalanche report... http://niseko.nadare.info/

Some troubles have occurred between hikers walking in a closed ski resort and the cat operation company running in there yesterday. Under the Japanese legislation, no ski resort operators have the right to ban people from hiking up Public Park areas, even if these hikers were interfering the CAT’s running course, machine operators have heavier safety responsibilities than walking people.

This information is issued for the sake of resort users stepping out of bounds, as well as for the same people recreationally entering Niseko’s surround mountains. Municipality areas, national forest or Hokkaido forest have no differences in the mountains, and snowcats and snowmobile are severely restricted in National park areas. We’re hoping no further troubles would occur on this matter.

One of my mates customers had a group photo up yesterday on FB with him tagged from their day at Chis. I haven't spoken to him as to whether they had any run ins but they've been guiding there for years even when the lifts were running. He's from Whiteroom and they have a good relationship with BD, so maybe they're just cool with some guiding companies and not others.

    I might ask the question.
