Um .... is there a reason why they aren't firing the guns up at Thredbo? I know it has been a little warm the past day or so but I haven't seen them running for a little why. Hopefully not a money-saving thing considering they are still selling tickets in advance for school holidays, etc.... Thoughts?
There are a couple of reasons why Thredbo has not been running their snowmaking system over the past days and weeks It has been unseasonably warm most nights over the past couple of weeks, meaning it has not been cold enough on average for them to use snowmaking. Thredbo typically concludes snowmaking for the season towards the end of August. It is normal that snowmaking is not used in September (and in fact the snowmaking conducted on Sunday was more of a surprise to many than the lack of it otherwise). THREDBO'S SNOWMAKING SYSTEM HAS BEEN BROKEN FOR WEEKS. As a result of damage to the compressed air pipe that supplies the snowmaking system, a majority of the system (all of their lance guns) has been offline for many weeks now. They have attempted a fix, but it was unsuccessful - it will require some work over summer to resolve the situation. In the meantime, they have borrowed a limited number of fan guns from Perisher to compliment their own limited number of fan guns - these have operated where possible - but that has been very limited due to conditions and power requirements. Hope that answers your question
All good! Has been discussed at length in the conditions thread so that probably where some of that concern came from. It is unfortunate, and has probably contributed to the early death of Supertrail and High Noon which finished up last weekend, and also Friday Flat will be done for by this weekend. They are now discounting the lift tickets, due to the limited terrain.
Don't worry, I have told a lot of friends about it, and they had no idea at all. It broke late July, so basically a natural season for them since then, first since the 80's, ouch!
Was the main compressed air pipe ever designed for the continual extension of the system? Did it get overloaded, did it corrode and pop, or a bit of both?
