This thread might be early but so too in the winter weather for the NW states this weekend.
Some resorts in Montana May see over a foot of fresh snow this weekend, with this intense polar low.

AO currently heading into the neg too.

Even though I'm not headed back to Big Sky this winter, can't help but pay attention to the early winter storm. This is weather warning for Big Sky and Bridger, near Bozeman, Montana. I-90 is the major east-west highway and there is a major pass between Bozeman and Billings to the east. Bozeman Pass is at almost 6000 ft.

Could get up to 2 feet and possibly more at the peaks and upper mountains in MT.
And this is only in the next 72 hours.

Note, the above image is likely taken from a drift zone, as you can see the roof on the background holds little more than half a foot.

The webcams and totals for Big Sky and Bridger aren't that impressive. Only a few inches. Monarch and Discovery did better. Still, any early snow and cold temps are a good sign.

The Long Range (next 10 days) is looking particular unsettled for the Pac Nor West & West Canada. back to back systems lined up on GFS & GFS Ensembles.
Looking at the Northern PV, it's strengthening quickly and has a North American bias at the moment.

One heck of a ground cooler.

The cold and the snow keeps coming for the Inland PNW.
Mainly around the 6" to 18" inches range for much of the state in Montana.
Snowfall also extends to the Dakotas, and maybe even to the family in Minneapolis.
All in the first half of October.

And the gradient between the Western cold air and the East Coast warm air:

Winter stepping on the gas pedal next week in the mid-West, East of The Rockies.

A series of reinforced cold outbreaks due through the Rockies over the next 2 days.
CO resorts should see at least 10-14 inches over the coming days. And record breaking cold temps (for October) extending right down into the Taxas Pan Handle, by Thursday.

The system then intensifies Eastward to the Great Lakes region (Friday) where snowfalls exceeding 18 inches is possible on the Canadian Great Lakes.

NE of continental US is down for a big cold outbreak over the next week to ten days.
Mid-Winterlike so breaking records in November will be inevitable.

Certainly an anomalous start to the season with heaps of deep cold around.
Assisted by the early snow season in Siberia and Northern Canada.

I like this conclusion since it's really good for the southeast (NC, VA, WV) where I'll be skiing in Dec-Jan. :)
The meteorologist who does the forecast for SkiSoutheast usually doesn't have to start until late November. But he did his first video forecast a few days ago. Snowmaking has begun at over half of the ski areas already, which is unusual. Brad is based in Charlotte, NC. Doesn't get to ski much locally, but takes a ski vacation in the Rockies every year.

Everyone in the U.S. northeast is pretty excited about the incoming snowstorm. I've mostly been following NY State from Whiteface in Lake Placid and south to Hunter and Belleayre in the Catskills (a couple hours north of NYC). When my daughter was in school in Lake Placid, we would spend Thanksgiving there (2013-16). It usually snowed. When I was a student at the same school long ago, one year there was plenty of snow by early November to hike for turns on the small hill on campus.

Winter storm warning for Nov. 11-12, 2019

Certainly will be deep for the tiny hills just west of Buffalo or Rochester. But from a skier's perspective, more interesting that the system seems as if it's going to hit Whiteface more than the ski hills just east of Rochester. McCauley (2-4" + 5-9") is forecast to get a little more than Snow Ridge (1-3" + 4-8") in the next 24 hours. The guys on the NYSkiBlog talk about Snow Ridge when it comes to powder skiing on lake effect snow.

In addition to the Winter Storm Warning, there is now a Winter Storm Watch that includes the NY Adirondacks for Nov. 11-12.

...WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 1 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO 1 PM EST TUESDAY...

WHAT...Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches.

WHERE...The Adirondacks of New York and most of central and northern Vermont.

WHEN...From 1 PM Monday to 1 PM EST Tuesday.

OpenSnow 5 day forecast for New York starting Nov. 11, 2019
Whiteface showing 15", Hunter (Catskills) showing 1" but could be more at the end of the week

The more traditional forecast map for the NY Adirondacks and northern New England from the Whiteface Facebook page. Whiteface posted the total could be 12 inches on the mountain.

The other way to see totals across a region is to check locations on a multi-resort pass on OpenSnow. Not only has Epic, Ikon, and MCP, also covers the Indy Pass, Freedom Pass, Powder Alliance, and a few regional combinations such as Colorado GEMS.

Ikon beats Epic for the current storm system. Sugarbush looks to get the most at 12" over 5 days. The Boyne resorts in Maine (Sunday River, Sugarloaf) do well and that makes people in Boston happy. I have friends who have seasonal rentals at Sunday River who make the 3-4 hour drive on weekends. They had a good time on opening day last weekend, even with only one lift open only loading every other chair. Plus Tremblant could get 10+ inches by the time the storm blows thru. Epic only has Stowe in the deep zone, with a 5-day forecast of 17".

OpenSnow 5-day for northeast Ikon, starting Nov. 11

Can confirm! The cold has arrived. Up here in southern Wisconsin we already broke snow records for October, hoping for the same for November!

Relatively frigid temps for November in the southeast means that almost every ski area from Washington DC south and west (VA, WV, NC) starting blowing snow last night. Many could continue during daylight hours. At Massanutten, the high was around 26ºF at mid-mountain. There was a dusting of snow yesterday in Asheville, western NC mountains. My daughter sent a pic. She wasn't thrilled the temp was 16ºF when she got up this morning.

Cataloochee is a small ski hill an hour from Asheville that typical opens early. Was first to open in the east, beating out Killington in Vermont by a couple hours on Nov. 9.

Canaan Valley in West Virginia got about 5 inches out of the storm. It's about an hour north of Snowshoe, which is owned by Alterra.

Whistler is still waiting. Will be only a partial opening up high, Sun Peaks is looking the goods with 55cm on the upper and 30 down low. 23/11 for them. Whistler will get a big storm soon enough, Pity about last weeks 86cm

In south central Wisconsin we've received 16" of snow so far this season, when the average to this date is only about 1.5". Not quite record breaking for November but getting there! We already broke all-time October snowfall records in my city (Madison).
