1939 was a year of remarkable high temperature extremes, massive fires (at least in Victoria - not sure about NSW?). But seems that today's maximums and massive bushfires will be up there to rival 1939.

Still 23 here with a southerly but believe it or not, the air is quite dry with only 32% humidity. It's very rare to get such a dry southerly, yet it has happened a few times this summer.

Smoke is next level in Canberra this morning. Real bad. We knew it was coming. Had a day or so of lower levels ( still well above hazardous levels but with a mask was not too bad) but there's no way were going out in that today. Better than fire I know but still totally fcukt up and a real nasty harbinger of where things are headed

My view. Going nowhere.

Looks like Dehli on a bad day

Someone earlier in the thread someone explained that this heat is not ‘going away’ just being bounced back and forth across Australia. Does anyone know when this is likely to break up and the South East of the country go back to more ‘normal’ conditions?

This is the new normal I fear.

Another rain band coming through ACT region
Not raining apart from a few dirty drops in Tuggeranong. Pea soup outside right now - taking visitors to the Portrait Gallery. I too fear that these conditions will become more frequent in summers to come.

Edit: most of the institutions are closed due to the poor air quality

Still hot out in the central west. Just ran some calcs for here. In the 30 days since the passing of that early december cold front (the one that dropped heaps of snow in the mounntains) our average daily maximum is 38. Thats from 5 December onwards. And the forecast maximums for the next 6 days are all above 38.

My grandmother used to talk about 1939 and remind us again every summer.

Amazing 24 hours in Cooma:
4pm yesterday: 34.3 (max temp yesterday 36.9)
4pm today: 9.3 (max temp today: 12.8)

Not too often in Australia would you be able to experience a variation to this extent from one day to the next.
Such an unprecedented event for so many reasons.

January 1939 did have legendary heat, but for Sydney at least, it finished an average month, with an average temperature range of 18.8 to 26.1. After a record 45.3° on the 14th, it didn’t reach 30° again for a month. In fact it didn’t reach 23° again for six days. I would have liked to have been able check another site, but online data, especially daily, is rare as hens teeth before the 1960s.

Richmond (UWS) had an average maximum of 31.6° in January 1939, about 2° above the average for that site (1907-1975). December 1938 was very hot at Richmond (av max 33.2, over 4 above average), while the OH average was 26.5 (about 1 above average).

At Sydney OH, December 1938 was very dry (11.7 mm), January was a bit below average (82 mm).

I might surmise on the basis of the above that the first half of Summer 1938/39 was dry, hot inland and mild/slightly above average on the coast with strong sea breezes, like many days so far this Summer. Then in mid January it flipped into a milder, wetter pattern.

What happened next? February was very dry (3 mm) and very hot inland (Richmond av max 34.9). March was cool and wet.

Any lessons for the months to come? Probably not.
