There’s warm air aloft. Sites that experience inversions, including the usual cold hollows, still cooled down. Sites that don’t experience inversions strongly, where the wind kept up all night, stayed warm. This includes those on local hills (OH, Mt Boyce, Terrey Hills) and those right on the coast.

There’s certainly a wide difference in minima, from 7-9° in the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley to 18-19° at OH and costal sites.

I wonder how many Sydney sites will crack 30 today, Penrith, Bankstown and Sydney Airport already there

There are dome very low dew-points around Sydney, many negative, with single-digit humidity. Sydney OH just cracked 30° with a dew point of -3.6° for a humidity of 11%.

There’s a bit of a temperature gradient Southwards. While it’s close to 30° across Sydney and almost as warm in the Wollongong area, it’s only about 25° in the Nowra and Jervis Bay area, apparently South of the main tongue of warm air. It’s fairly chilly South of Ulladulla where the cool change has reached.

The change seems to have stalled somewhat as well.
It's taking a long time to get from Moruya AP to Ulludulla.
And yes, it is much, much cooler behind the change.

The NW-WNW winds are very gusty in Sydney at present.

The SW component of the change is starting to cool down (temp drop noticeable here) hence the temp gradient between the underlying airmass and the coastal southerly is decreasing. That's why the coastal change is slowing down. It also meets increased resistance from the westerly between Ulladulla and Nowra, as the westerlies penetrate the gap in the range around Nerriga.

Massive contrast in temps between the inland/south and coast/north today in NSW: Wagga only reached 14° C vs. 30° C in Sydney, with an especially sharp latitudinal gradient between 34°–33° S; Young (380 m) maxed at 16° C vs. 19° C at Orange (945 m). An equally strong longitudinal gradient was noted, with Forbes (230 m) almost as cool as Orange at the same latitude.

Down here it topped at just 7° C (948 m)—currently 4.4° C under low, heavy cloud (94% RH).

Heat or last night's excesses making you ill?

Was in yard both days this weekend. Hot and windy. Loved it. Backyard Davis Pro topped out at 30.4 this afternoon.
First beer at end of day is a joy that cannot be matched by anything else.
Summer crop of herbs and veg ready to go.
Self induced coma now for next 4 days.

I reckon I got heatstroke working in the backyard today.
Felt really ill .
Was legit warm in the sun.
Tomorrow will be a shock at 16 degrees.
Warm on the sand as well. Beaut day although a bit too windy in the early afternoon.
Yeah tomorrow and then the hourly forecast on WZ has 7°C at 4am on Tuesday with rain falling. That is genuinely cold.
Also noticed the mention of small hail possible for tomorrow.

The wind was pretty full on here in the BM's. Gusts of 60km/h + and sustained of about 35-40km/h for much of the day. Cracked 31c in Glenbrook.

This from 00z GFS spells it out nicely:

There are many days when Wagga 'beats' Canberra and even Bungendore for maximum temp, but rarely does it beat Orange so convincingly. The mid winter max averages for Wagga and Canberra- when westerlies and inland inversions dominate- aren't actually all that different. It's the inverse in summer when low altitude coastal locations are cooler than Canberra by day. The mean 24 hour temps are still cooler in Canberra in both cases, though.

Lucky that there has been some rain recently on the coast, otherwise today could have been challenging for fires. The fire season should be mandatorily declared on September 1, at least for all areas on and east of the ranges. An early start has been declared for many of these regions, though. There was still a bushfire near Morisset though; that area has a suspicious amount of ignitions, along with Cessnock and Raymond Terrace...

After a bright, sunny morning it's become quite overcast and cooled down here in the last hour or so. There was a brief large-drop shower a few minutes ago. The Sydney radar is starting to look quite busy Southwards.

The BOM are going for 10-25 mm of rain in Sydney over the next few days, mostly tomorrow.

Short burst of sun at B1. Temp almost half yesterdays max. Cumulus are glaciating and producing virga but little rain on the driveway.

8-15mm tomorrow, could of sworn it was 25mm a few days ago on the forecast

Bungendore
There are reports of snow flurries on the Oberon Plateau. Unsurprising given the instability and cold air aloft. Lake Bathurst (near Tarago) copped a short hailstorm earlier with the temp getting down as low as 3C. That area is only 700 m ASL but boy does it cop some storms. As usual, nothing much in Bungendore, just some cold rain. Cold downdrafts in the stronger cells such as these may produce some flakes above 1000 m.

The SE change- which has taken forever to get from the southern side of Bungendore to my northern side- is just hitting here now. There is a minor cell riding the change but I don't think it will produce anything here, even though temps shot up to 11C in a lengthy sunny period. Storms love any bit of sunshine in setups like this, but Bungendore hasn't got the terrain working in its favour. Things look to be a bit more stable behind that front.

Castle Hill - Sydney
Not much rain at Lane Cove today at work (one short shower about 10 am), but drove through some heavy rain on my way home between Epping and Castle Hill.
Once home, and driving into my driveway, I noticed the below pics. One of the most intensely colourful rainbows I've ever seen, from the heavy rain I had just driven through. Also, it was distinctly colder at home, 30 minutes after I had left work at Lane Cove. About 11 degrees compared to 16 at work.
