Strange because the pressure is lower to the north with that low up there off the SE Qld coast.
Anyway, there might be other influences at play.
All good.
Yeah was 15mm to 25mm forecast for the Illawarra.

The lookout from Scammells Ridge two days ago (Wed 20th Jul). Healthy snow cover, despite the recent bombardment of warm and sunny days here on the west side of the divide. July's done a total 180 on June RE westerly activity.

Not that strange though, we are further south but get more orographic influence with the escarpment and indeed that has been the case. There's a few 10mm + totals at rain gauges on and just east of the escarpment. Upper Calderwood which is about 5km west of Albion Park AWS scored 18mm so far since 9am which beats out all the Sydney Metro sites.

An overcast, showery day. The showers were mostly light here, but there were a couple of heavier falls. There were also patches of blue sky and a few sunny breaks, allowing OH to spike to nearly 18° around lunch time. I had commitments that kept me mostly indoors - probably a good day for it.

The Sydney radar is now far less busy than it has been for much of the day. Small white blobs pop up just off shore, head WNW , grow and develop blue, green, yellow, sometimes red cores as they cross the coast. OH is currently in the path of such a rain train, now on 10 mm since 9:00 and counting.

But better times are just around the corner. While the longer term forecast is depressing, maybe we get a break for late Winter.

What's this clearing edge you talking about?
All I see is unending cloud moving in from both the east and the west. Seems like today is another write off.

It's just raining from nothing here now. Occasionally there's a hazy hint of sun but it is just going from drizzle to heavier rain and back again. Even looks like there's a hint of blue above us through the misty cloud but it continues to drizzle/rain.

A lazy 71mm in the Nylex this week. 12 month running total to date is 2,722mm in that old, yellow plastic tube.

There definitely was a clearing edge down here, now it's just been replaced with dry StratoCu. Hope it burns off so we can get some proper sunshine, although with humidity expected to be in the 70-80% range all day I doubt it will clear. Usually needs to be about 60-65% humidity or less for that to happen.

Thankfully next week actually looks pretty good for the most part. But most extended GFS runs are showing showery weather with E/SE winds for the first week of August.

In Wollongong we are in a drying SW flow.
You can see the showers beginning to dissipate.

It was a dank, dark mizzly day here today in the Hills District.
There were a couple of brighter periods, but they didn't last long. It barely cleared at any stage.
It remained surprisingly cool. Barely reaching above 15 degrees.
It was still drizzling an hour ago.

I'm really looking forward to a somewhat drier week this week.
I was in Parramatta this morning and it wasn't much better.
The river was flowing nicely.

Bright, cool and sunny here, at least the part of the sky I can see. Looking at “Layers”, Sydney is under a gap in the cloud cover, so it might not last. The ECL is now well out to sea now but the general circulation still looks SE on the coast. We need the ridge of high pressure to pass overhead to protect us from crap blowing in off the Tasman Sea - maybe this afternoon.

EDIT: looking at Homer’s post and the Windsor traffic cam (https://www.livetraffic.com/incident-details/cam-a000016), the blob over Western Sydney seems to be fog. There’s still thicker cloud to the South and East.

There has been less rain than I thought today so far, which is good. But showers look like moving their way onshore by the radar for later this afternoon.

I have done a quick look at Sydney Monthly Rain Records, particularly how "strong" or "weak" a record is. This year there have been two record rainfall months at OH, March and July. I had never really looked at the records before, but July is the weakest record OH has. The previous record of 336mm was only 3.5x the monthly average, which is the lowest for any month. November's record of 517mm is the strongest, at 6.2x the monthly average.

That’s an interesting take on strong and weak records.
July has just hit 400mm for Sydney OH now, which is a lot stronger.
July is not usually a time of year for big rain events.
Locally we have had 325mm of rain for July at Maitland Airport, and 294mm at Tocal - which is a long term record.
Williamtown (Newcastle Airport) also has had a record 324mm for July.
The last week of July looks like having negligible or only trace amounts of rain, so the tally won’t go up much from here, and pretty average temperatures.

Yep I've got washing on too.

I think for me it's just nice putting it on and knowing it'll be dry in the same day instead of like 5 days. Then doing some cleaning after that.

Wow what an exciting Sunday.

My Sunday as well. Plus, the grocery shopping and some business paperwork. Yippee!!
Sun just breaking through the fog here now, although no blue sky yet. It won't be long though.

A look at the 'marginal' snow line areas in northwest KNP. This line is traditionally around 1,350–1,400 m AMSL; defined where snow cover is present for most of the wintry season, even through sunny periods.

11 °C and largely uninterrupted sunshine at Kiandra:

It turned out to be a fine day, mostly sunny with a bit of afternoon cloud. It even got fairly warm, hitting 20° at a few Sydney sites including OH.

Here’s the view from Streeton Lookout, overlooking the Hawkesbury River near Richmond, early this afternoon.

E30-C8913-EDCC-4-F46-A253-D4-A32-B883-CF1.jpg

The area was flooded just a few weeks ago. The river banks have been stripped of vegetation and in places severely eroded. There is still a lot of mud and standing water about.

Beautiful blue-sky morning here. Great to see.

There’s been a lot of fog around Sydney, as shown in WZ Layers (visible) at 8:00:

6-C20885-A-2108-42-B9-AFC7-D298-D1-B28764.jpg

We have fog flowing out of Broken Bay instead of mud. The sinewy threads are valley fogs and there’s a foggy blob over much of Western Sydney. There’s fairly a benign-looking cloud bank out to sea which we see in Y_FZ’s picture.

Fog only cleared here in Stanhope Gardens just before 12pm. Temperature now started to rise rapidly, just hit 13’c. You would mistaken for being in Canberra with this half day fogs.

Yes indeed it was a nice day.
Sprayed as many lawns as possible today, hopefully I can get ahead start on the weeds.

Interesting forecast for the Hunter tomorrow, chance of a thunderstorm in the morning and arvo, I'd be happy with that providing it don't p!ss down too much precip.

Beautiful day down this way, and a light NE sea breeze.
LIGHT?

Must have been around lunch I guess.

I went down to North Gong. Crazy as sea gales with a massive groundswell.

My car was covered in sea spray and I was parked 500m from the beach.
