Well the last three days have overshot, averaging over 20C. The month-to-date average max is now 16.96C with three cool days to come. If the forecast is right, we'll end up at 16.86C, though I suspect with multiple sun icons Obs Hill will overshoot again.
It’s now 16° at OH and seems to be on its way to about 19°. That’s a big overshoot. Was the BOM expecting a cold front? Or maybe more cloud?

Not that I’m complaining - another beautiful day.

Yeah we had 15 forecast here in wollongong.
Its around that temperature right by the ocean. Under a cool maritime breeze.
However , in the sun and away from the coast. Quite nice.

Further to my earlier post, the winds turned Southerly and freshened around lunch time, with the temperature peaking at 16.4° around 1:00 PM, so it seems to have been a front, albeit one not marked even on NZ Met’s chart. Just a small overshoot today.

Another fresh morning in Lithgow. Yards completely white, dog’s water bowls frozen, outdoor taps not working….

Very chilly tonight near the Southern shore of Lake Macquarie. The car thermometer was showing 8° at around 8:30 PM. Cooranbong near the Western shore of the Lake is now below 5°, but that site does seem to be a bit of a frost hollow.

One thing you see here that you don’t see in Sydney - the Milky Way.

====

The BOM seems to be undershooting both maxima and rainfall totals for Sydney lately. During today, 850 temps over Sydney were around 1-2°, so 15-16° was not unreasonable. However, the OH site is warm on calm, sunny days when the sea breeze is asleep. Most of Sydney maxed around 17-18° rounded but OH was warmest.

Could be a chilly day if this high cloud doesn't bugger off.
Yep and all models have the cloud increasing throughout the day so the forecast max of 18 for Penrith will be way off. I think 12-13°C will be about the max in the west today and maybe 15-16°C for the eastern suburbs. But could easily stay below 10 in places like Camden and Richmond until early arvo IMO. Glad I'm working out in western Sydney tomorrow and not today.

It was very cold this morning with a heavy dew. Don’t know what the temperature was, maybe the 3.8° at Gosford gives an indication. Cooranbong got down to 1.4°. The cloud bank seems to have arrived around dawn.

There’s blue sky to the West here (Doyalson area).

4c was my overnight minimum.
Nice enough day here despite the high cloud, enough sunny periods to have warmed things up.

A couple of pics from last night attempts at the meteor shower, saw a handfull but I don't think I captured any, yet to go through all the images.

We almost got there, and some places did.
There was some filtered sunshine around mid-morning here, and the wind picked up during that time. It felt decidedly warmer for a while and raised some temps to the levels @Steve777 suggested would happen.
Yet, the cloud (and fog) must have been thicker and longer lasting at places like Camden (max 13.3), Badgerys Creek (max 14.9) and Campbelltown max 15.1), which is what we suggested (may) happen.
The rest of the metro ended up with max's between 16 and 19 deg's C.
The Illawarra was similar, except for the two outlying places in the Southern Highlands.

I observed a daytime inversion down in the Murray Valley…accompanied by wind and rain! It was raining at 8 °C when I left Tumbarumba, but when I got to Jingellic it was only 5 °C in the afternoon—that's not more than 300 m AMSL.

At Walwa it was shockingly cold; on the lower end of 4 °C under the heaviest showers, and I could've sworn it were sleet in some of the rain drops! Walwa seems to have maxed at just 6 °C today—that's only a degree warmer than at nearby Hunters Hill which stands about 700 metres higher.

Yeah I definitely got it wrong. There was more wind than I was expecting and the lowish humidity at the surface I guess made it easier for the inversions to break.

Although down the coast it was decently cold and calm with Bega only reaching 10.2°C. Khancoban only reached 4.9°C today which concurs with @Adaminaby Angler 's obs.

I remember when I did a trip through the Upper Murray valley in May last year I camped near Jingellic which was at 6°C when I left in the morning. Anyway the coldest spot on that whole drive was at Walwa which was sitting on 4°C at about 11am with very thick fog. Then crossing the next valley to Khancoban it was sunny and 7°C. Walwa is definitely a very cold spot and I reckon would get more all day fogs and colder daytime temps than Khancoban at times.
Amd at Jindabyne at about 1pm the temp was 13°C.

I think you'll find the Milky Way is setting at this time of the year.

When it's rising, the Emu's head (Coal Sack nebula next to Southern Cross) is going up, not down as in this photo.

The photos were looking in a north-east direction, the milkyway was at the time more directly above, I don't quite have a wide enough lens to capture it all.

Continuing the trend of way below average sunshine this past 12 months, July 2022 averaged 5.0 hours of sunshine per day, the 3rd lowest since 1990 (lowest was 4.4 hours).
A run of sunny days at the end of the month managed to bump the daily average sunshine to a relatively respectable 5.0 hours, about 50% of the possible amount. The first week of July had 3.1 hours in total.

July average temperatures at OH ranged from 9.4° to 17.0°, respective 0.5° above and 0.9° below recent decade averages. A run of relatively warm days at the end of the month dragged the average maximum out of the 16’s but it was still the coolest since 1998. There was a total of 404 mm of rainfall in July, about five times the recent decade average. About 70% of this fell in a very wet first week.

I recall having to occasionally scrape ice off the windscreen when I lived in Bankstown. Sometimes it would quickly refreeze after I washed it away.

Anyway, the cold won’t last. We’ve got a warm spell coming up, with 850 temps over Sydney as high as a Summer-like 14° on Thursday. There will be cloud, with some showers Thursday. Even so, I would be adding at least two degrees to Sydney’s forecast maxima this working week, including today.

Things cool back down on the weekend, although it will be fine.

I stand corrected. I thought I could see the Coal Sack Nebula.

Lots of bluish stars in the northern section of the Milky Way I have found from close examination of some photos I took at Mt Augustus in 2018.

I've told the boss to get ****** and that I'm having the day off, just such a nice day not to have off.
I've noticed plenty of pollen coming off the pines in the strong winds last week, at one of my jobs there's a few pines so I gave a tree a shake and sure enough plenty of pollen came off, see video.

Beautiful day in Canberra today before the big storm starts to impact the region tomorrow. BOM have possibly severe thunderstorms in the forecast and a large 60-100mm for Thursday, thats some rain for Canberra.

Even more expected to the west with a Moderate to Major floodwatch for the Tumut river.

Still surprised at how there's been no discussion of the upcoming event here. Falls forecast between 150-400 mm, probably around the 200 mm but that's massive for you guys. Moderate falls extending all the way up inland NSW as well.
