Very strong westerly is in full force here, 30-40km/h sustained and gusting around 80km/h would be my guess. Albion Park is not far behind either, so will probably be a matter of time before Bellambi gets it.
Least the wind wasn’t as bad as forecast last night. Quick check of models = status quo, boring stable pattern to continue, couple of short wave’ers but still no precipitation for 95% of the State. Hope August fares better.
Yeah I reckon below zero will be achieved in places like Camden and Richmond. Here could also get close to zero if the wind drops. I suspect it won't drop enough in this area though.
It got to 20-21 degrees across Sydney today. The sea breeze was even briefly awakened. The BOM undershot Sydney's forecast by nearly 2 degrees. They've also been overshooting minima by a degree or so, with wind keeping it from getting too cold. But the wind has now dropped right off. With completely clear skies tonight does look like being cold. I think that we're in for 6 or maybe 7 more consecutive 20+ days, including next week's mini-heatwave, before a weak front next Wednesday, but that just looks like a blip in the pattern according to GFS. EDIT: This morning's Access shows a significant cold front on Saturday week (27th), but it's early days yet.
IMO, Wednesday will definitely be below 20C so that would make 5 more consecutive days. You have probably posted this before, but what is the record for amount of consecutive days above 20 in July? Seems like runs like this happen almost yearly nowadays. I would love a proper ECL right about now!
The wind certainly did not drop in this area with gusts of 61km/h not long ago at Albion Park. Here the wind is much lighter but still about 20-30km/h I would guess. Meanwhile Camden and Richmond both dipped below zero with the latter dropping to -2.5°C. Most other suburbs were between 0 and 3 degrees, with suburbs closer to the coast dropping to around 7 to 8°C
Temperatures plummeted overnight with record lows being recorded. Notable minimums include Taree (0.4°C), Grafton (0.1°C), Kempsey(-0.7°C), Richmond (-2.4°C), Gunnedah (-4.0°C), Tamworth (-4.2°C), Mudgee (-4.6°C). GlenInnes went one level further, dropping to -12.3°C at 6.30am this morning. This is the coldest temperature recorded in Australia this year! The ‘feels like’ temperature got down to -18!
4.0C here, the coldest so far this year. I am beginning to realise this location is warmer than where I grew up (not far away)
-12.3°C is crazy cold and there could be a round 2 tonight if the wind drops with dew points currently -15 and 11% RH at Glen Innes.
Got down to -0.4 degrees here this morning, temperatures are certainly rising fast though. Looks like another stunning day with shorts and t-shirt weather.
Yeah it's an amazing day outside, certainly does feel warm in the sun. Obs Hill has cracked the 20 degree mark again.
I bottomed out at 1.7c this morning at 05:09 on my PWS Parklea, the coldest morning of the year so far. This July is currently averaging out slightly warmer by 0.1c (18.6v18.5) than the past month, but I am expecting this to go higher with the new week warm spell.
Yes those light westerlies during the past few nights have stopped the temp from going low here, although this morning the temp was 9c at 5.15am and by 6am it was 4.3c. Maxed out at 18.4c. Currently the temp is 7.7c, could be my coldest night of the year coming up, but that depends on the breeze.
Doing the same here, may even go close to the first frost of the year. But like previous nights the temp was quick to plummet before the Norwesterly breeze drifted in spiking the temp back into the teens for a fair portion of the night. It would be nice to see a frost, even if its a patchy one.
Last night and tonight could be the two coldest nights of the year here. From tomorrow night onwards the minimums warm up. Doesn't look like this dry spell is going to end anytime soon.
Been a strange winter indeed. Wondering whether any half decent snow will fall around here for rest of the season. Should have our first frost for a week or so out here in the morning. Strange weather out here.
1.2 at Albion Park this morning which is cold, but I think we had a couple of colder nights in June. Shaping up to a pretty nice day and looks like the first proper NE sea breeze of the warm season will occur. Other cold minimums worth mentioning are the rounded -7's at Marrangaroo and Cooma Ap.
Yeah the lake moderates it. Coldest I've seen is Neg 7 here. You need altitude and location like a bowl. Ie Cooma itself gets colder than the Cooma AP. Meanwhile at Perisher last night it hit -20 dp. At plus 3!
Ended up having my coldest night of the year 3.7c, but could have been lower if that breeze didn't get up for an hour or so just after midnight. Anyway a stunning day here this morning.
Today continued the pattern of warm, clear, sunny days and cold nights in Sydney. Great outdoor weather: It also continued the pattern of the BOM undershooting "Sydney's" forecast maxima and minima by 1 degree. Sydney OH is tracking 9.5 to 19.3 degrees for July so far, +0.8 to +1.9 with respect to 1981-2010 averages, including today. By the end of the forecast period it will be 9.1 to 19.6, or 9.4 to 19.8 if you add 1 to all the forecast max & min. It's hard to tell what's average now at OH, however. Parramatta might be a better indication of how Sydney is tracking, as of today 6.4 to 18.7, assuming that today's max was a bit over 20. That's +0.2 to +1.2 against the long term (51 year) average. By next Saturday, this would be 6.4 to 19.1 if the forecast is correct. Richmond is tracking 3.8 to 18.8, +0.3 to +1.1. In a week's time the average max will be about 0.3 higher, the average min about the same.
To be fair the Airport site started reporting at the end of 1996. Prior to that the official Town site was from the Post Office, and a much 'warmer' site than the frost hollow at the Airport.... still. a -12 is pretty impressive !
Hi it’s Kino and it’s been 12 days since my last drop of rain ... and looking to be another 10 more via models.
Interesting discussion in the Stratopheric thread - looks like potential snow weather mid/late August. August has been good for snow east of the higher peaks so straws crossed.
That potential snow on Wednesday morning has completely gone now. Pretty disappointing as I'll likely be too busy after this week to do any snow chasing for the rest of the winter.
Warm and windy here today with a NW'ly. It feels like at least 22°C out here. I notice Bellambi and Albion Park have sea breezes.
Hi Kino, dont fall off the bandwagon now!! Its much the same here, 13 days. Anyway a very spring like day here, currently 22.7c could have been warmer than that as we have had a power outage for the past three and half hours and my station stops during power failures.
Some recent statistics for Richmond, 55 km WNW of Sydney: The temperature there has dropped below zero on 5 of the last 6 days and six of the last 8. The temerature range today was -0.8° to 24.6°, i.e. 25.4°. In the old money that's 30.6°F to 76.3°F.
Cessnock also got a decent diurnal range. Min was -2.5°C and max was 22.7°C. Today was a great day reaching 23°C here. It started feeling cold basically right when the sun went down and it is currently 9°C so we should be in store for another cold night.
From the Yass farmer's markets to the tablelands astride Bookham and Burrinjuck; 550-800 m AMSL. At noon, with a South-Westerly squall and a temperature straddling 5°-7° C (Thursday)—absolutely no sign of "drought" in the slightest: Spoiler About to descend into the valleys of Burrinjuck, of which I shall post later: Spoiler
Today felt like late Spring in NW Sydney, my maximum temperature reached 24.2c on my PWS Parklea. It has now pushed the average maximum temperature for the month up to 19c, 0.5 warmer then June. So far this winter I have not had a single frost, and the Tulips in the front garden think it is mid spring too. A perfect bluebird day Kurrajong Heights was easily visible from The Ponds.
There's a wide range of temperatures across Sydney at the moment. The usual hollows are now cold, including Sydney Olympic Park (9.6), Campbelltown (9.5) and Richmond (8.6). Meanwhile, places that don't get inversions are around 16-17, including OH at 16.2, Mt Boyce (9.9, equivalent to about 17 at Sea level), Terry Hills, 16.7 (about 18 at sea level) and coastal sites. Walking in my neighbourhood earlier this evening, the air felt cold air near the railway, where the air flows downhill and piles against the embankment. There were even small patches of cold air higher up. I think you'd get some reasonable differences between sites a few tens of metres apart.
I am noticing that at my location too. There is a 4c temperature difference between my location which is at the top of the hill and the frost hollows of Stanhope Gardens which are only about 20-40m lower in altitude.
Couple of showers on the radar over the higher peaks associated with a short wave’er passing by. Doubt it’ll amount to anything anywhere else.
It's a full 8/8 mid level cloudy sky this morning in Western Sydney. I think today's forecast 23 all depends on timing, if this cloud bank stays longer than forecast, the temp would fall well short of forecast.
