Why run when you can walk? Nothing too spectacular this far, and nothing super inspiring yet in the longer range outlook.

The prospect of a "weak/non-traditional" El Nino is fairly ambiguous as far as outlook goes. There is probably an expectation of enhanced SW flow which is typically good for the Southern Lakes. Above average SSTs persist, and the outlook for winter temperature wise is mild at this stage. That said, the precip outlook is normal to above normal, and snow cover duration in the region of our southern ski areas is more sensitive to variability in precipitation than temperature. If I could define a "fairly normal" ski season for the lower South Island, that's what I'd be predicting. Probably a bit scratchier in eastern ranges of Canterbury.

Yeah, they along with other higher spots in the Southern Lakes should have picked up 5 - 15 cm today. Wind will be having an impact now I suspect.

Freakin' miserable in Dunedin this morning. Long way out but could be a good season starter?

I don't know much about reading the different charts but this is still looking promising from my naive eye? Firing up the stoke for 2019

On the main divide, but it doesn't look like a season starter.

Yep, Canterbury should do well. I can't see Cardrona opening in any meaningful way this weekend.

Is mountainwatch even credible anymore? They predict 171cm at Shutt (if it eventuated it will be Shutt!)

    I call bullshit!

Remarks claiming 60cm fresh snow in the past 3 days and Hutt opening today with a base of 50-100cm, not too shabby to start the season!

Yes, its a warm NW front blowing in tonight
just wait for 3 consecutive storms in july to build a base,
avoid the family august madness and ski the S Island,
await the cream corn in sept - nov ...

Keen interest in the current charts as we plonk in QT Monday for 10 days
The NZ picture has been crazy variable with the discussions around the system coming to the Australian Alps around the 29th also affecting NZ next week
EC has been the most promising with AXS-G being truly schizophrenic variously promising Tropical temps to Antarctic blasts, dry to wet
Seems EC GFS are lining up as the predictions for the systems coming from the West stabilise
Hopefully see some snow from Monday through Friday based on GFS and EC
That's a major upgrade from a week ago!

Heading to Q'town for a week 05/07, looking scant + Aus school holidays so crowded.
Will have to weigh up some alternative (non skiing options) when we get there.

    Agree
Charts have really chopped and changed and when they do that it's rarely a cold wet upgrade
Hopeful for something around Weds Thurs Fri

I'm not sure there'll be quite that much snow, but if it does come as snow, CP should get a little too. TC may do best, which they'd be thankful for.

Took the kids to Cardrona yesterday and was really impressed with what they've done with the snow making. Off piste looking very sad though.

    Bit better
I went 30 for Cardies and Remarks because they always seem to get more moisture but I agree it's optimistic
10-20 probably but cold through to the weekend from Weds night is good for snowmaking too
