That's frightening. However, my experience at Cardies is that the lifties were very sharp with stopping the lifts when people had trouble loading. At times, they erred too much on the side of caution and stopped too often.

I cant really understand how the lift was never stopped? Must have been a major lapse of attention by the lifties

Sadly yes. Unless maybe if we are able to stop the leakages over the border during that time? Can only dream.
Yeah unless a true had border is imposed with NSW, which they did last year properly but they have indicated they won't this time around I doubt NZ will want to open to Australia once the 8 weeks are up.

.Looks like 2022 NZ trip, NZ air have my money so unless other OS opens for us with out HQ we could fly somewhere for a ski via NZ. Cananda?

Yep people are still crossing the NSW / Vic border freely = no checks so NZ wont make a distinction sadly .
HMH still fly late Sept. and am pretty sure Mt Cook region could be awesome into October?

HMH have told me they aim to continue into October so am keeping that option open, but as NSW have fcukt this so badly it is only a remote possibility.

Only hope is Nz open the border to vaccinate people.
Current situation in nsw is nothing short of a cluster fuxk. I recon they will still be battling this till Christmas at the current rates of progres.

It is all looking grim. Outside chance evaporating for late Oct with the climb in NSW cases. Even if it was to swing around NZ would want weeks of no cases or little transmission outside quarantine. The other issue I have with credits is spring through summer the tariffs are higher so I have to chuck more in and then run the risk of a snap border closure again.

Yeah, NSW is completely fcukt. Gladys has given up with restrictions, thrown her hands in the air and going all in on a vaccination strategy which will take months to get results.

And any chance of sneaking into Thredbo or Perisher for a quick trip (from Qld) is non-existent. I'm getting accustomed to the idea that it'll be over two years between ski trips (Northern winter last year to souther winter next year).

Yeah I had a photo trip planned for regional NSW and then a dash across to the snowfields as a back up to a failed NZ trip reschedule (my third) and I have to can that now too.

I realise this may pain some people locked down in Australia; I sympathise.

I was very lucky to fly over to Queenstown just before the bubble burst.

It has not been the busiest or snowiest season in the Southern Lakes, but still have had some good conditions and good photo opportunities.

Here's some kiwi snow porn from the first half of the winter for you to enjoy.

Holy hell, that looks absolutely incredible.

Hell, I live in New Zealand and haven't had anywhere near the same skiing opportunities, mostly just groomers and very ordinary offpiste skiing for me! I have had some bad luck with missing powder days due to work or being in the wrong part of the country at the time, though o_O

Heli skiing looks like a bit of a dream come true! Hopefully the second half of your season is just as epic as the first.

This is the worst freaking timing. This lockdown happening just one or two days later would have been a lot easier to bear.

The Canterbury ski fields are all loaded with tons of fresh pow, and they've been mostly closed for the past two days while the storms were ongoing. Accumulations of 40+ cm. Wednesday/Thursday were gonna be MEGA.

Now all that pow is just gonna sit there, untouched, and deteriorate. What a waste. Would have been nice to ski it before going into lockdown

((maybe it'll still be good on the weekend, maybe we'll escape lockdown after only 3 days... maybe))

What actually happens to tourists over there? They can't go home and many stay in the holiday parks, which they close down or in camping grounds, which they also shut down.

So much good snow going unridden.

I’ve been doing 15 hour days since last week so I could get away for a few days when the storm cleared. Even amuri is loaded.
Talking to some people who were skiing on Tuesday and saying they've never ridden powder like that before in NZ, dry and deep. Heliskiing is also fully booked for this Saturday

Unfortunately I don't think anyone is going heliskiing on Saturday.

Good storm though, stayed mild in Dunedin while the precip and just cold enough temps hit the Southern Alps, that's what you want for big accumulation. My suspicion is that this was probably not particularly dry snow (even by NZ standards), but people were probably noticing a lack of wind effect in many places as the wind dropped while the snow persisted.

That’s true. The storm from Friday 13 aug was light density (at the tail end of the storm) and some truly suburb skiing by anyone’s international standard (for a 30cm dump). This last storm was good but noticeably heavier sitting around 4F in density. Was great skiing at coronet yesterday, but not blower. The winds reduced from gale at 3am and to light/calm at 6am, the bits of snow after that covered up any wind effect on the snow from 16 august and all was good.

Late August last year (forget the exact date, but it was a big'n) was blower pow at Coronet. That was a very cold storm, there was snow on the ground from Milton all the way through on the drive over.

I would have been in Queenstown today after a couple of weeks in Wanaka and due to fly home on Sunday so also having to do HQ.

Gladys is responsible for this whole shit show.
