The Mayor of Queenstown said today that 25-30% unemployment was likely in the Southern Lakes area.

Having spent 2-4 weeks in QT for the past 20+ years I always felt there was a bit of a House of Cards feeling to to it's success
When the cockney spruikers arrive with their packaged "experiences" from the other side of the World you start wondering what it would take to make it all go "poof"
I pondered if flight shaming might gnaw away at it, but I don't think Indians and Chinese were particularly affected by those sensibilities
Will be interesting to see how long the Covid effect lasts

I know right. It’s like the tulip frenzy in Holland in the 17th century. It will be interesting to see which operators can successfully pivot away from the business model that’s been built on overcharging foreign (Chinese let’s face it) tourists to do sometimes pretty ordinary stuff. If the market is now going to be essentially domestic, NZers simply won’t pay 400 bucks to go zip trekking or take a helicopter ride to the top of a glacier or any of the rest of it. The outdoors and the glorious spine of mountains that Tasman called “a land uplifted high” in 1642 are our birthright.

So Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton has had an ANZAC moment and said that he would like to be able to ease travel restrictions between Australia and Aotearoa by the second half of the year. We are, apparently, a natural partner, which must be about the nicest thing he’s ever said about us. Jacinda’s not playing ball though yet. Borders staying shut until we’re sure it’s safe to open it again. Presumably there will have to be a whole lot of new kit at the airports, thermal imaging, contact tracing tech for all arrivals and so on.

Probably. You’ll be getting one back though as soon as we can ship out that lunatic in Christchurch since he’s changed his plea to guilty.
I would have thought you would want to keep him to make sure he serves his sentence, given what happened with the French and the Rainbow Warrior bombers. Dunno what the legalities are with incarcerating someone convicted in a foreign jurisdiction. We do have a substantial Middle East gang member population in Oz prisons, so he would be bound to receive a hearty welcome.

Nah - looks like we’re going to be too skint to spend the millions keeping him in the big house for the rest of his natural. You guys do it.

There’s always Aussies to rip off hopefully by mid winter? Until then I reckon locals could just about haggle their way to a good accommodation deal? Those rates in the southern Lakes have been steadily March above inflation (like Oz!) and this pandemic will be a bit of a wake up call.

Most Aussies will drift back to NZ, it might just take till 21’ to get most on board again?

And if Japan/ Nth Am remains off limits over summer NZ could do very well come winter 21’ from some very frustrated pow chasers?

We like coming over but we avoid getting ripped off. :)
Yes, it's been a while since I was unknowingly forced to shelter the unwelcome lodger through the backdoor
I continue to hand over $10 for a carton of chips at the ski fields quite willingly though

Whale spotted by the interislander wharf this morning
world gone mad
Then there was the two guys in Hawkes Bay who put their cars into the drive thru at Maccas last night, went home to bed and then returned to them at 5 am.

That whale (a juvenile humpback) was back in Wellington Harbour again today. No queues anymore at the supermarket which, I suppose is a good spinoff from the stupid queues at maccas.

They were expecting 25% of normal customers I think. With the assumption it could be locals only.
So now that domestic travel is allowed it should be a brighter outlook even under level 2

TBH, even if we are able to travel to NZ, we’ll probably still stick with Australia this year. Our flights with Emirates were cancelled and while we will be able to rebook them at no extra cost, I’m assuming that the Dubai-Sydney-Christchurch flights won’t be happening anytime soon.

At this point, we’re looking at pulling the kids out of school for a week in early September and going down to Perisher. I’m also supposed to be going to Thredbo with uni for social week in July.

@Peanut What period of time were your cancelled Emirates flights?

We have flights SYD - CHC in early August still showing on their system but like you I doubt they'll have aircraft over here by then.

They were for early July. We were going to go over during the school holidays. I know the snow is better in August, but I’m a teacher, and have to go when the school holidays are on.

There was an article this morning saying they are looking at travel bubbles. So states that are doing well might be able to look at direct travel to NZ. Still very early days.

Nope.
Jacinda has repeatedly said NO agreements with Australia until all the borders are open and it’s a single agreement not piecemeal with individual states.

I did see Air NZ is restarting Auckland to Tokyo flights - but only once a week from 25th of June.

Interesting given there are quite a few cases still popping up in Tokyo. Are they doing quarantine or exempt? Testing? I assume it’s mainly diplomatic/business related travel at this stage - like the flights Aus/NZ

On Tuesday, NZ Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said it was up to Australia whether the travel bubble would be between New Zealand and select states, or if all internal travel restrictions would have to be removed first.

“[Prime Minister Scott Morrison] has actually left that open,” she told a New Zealand radio station.

“We’ve said that’s a matter for Australia, we’re not necessarily here determining that it has to be country-wide.

“They have very deliberately left the option of opening up individual states.”

Mr Morrison has expressed his own frustrations at interstate border restrictions put in place by state premiers.

In May, he said some states had to “get out from under the Doona sometime”.

He said interstate travel restrictions “do harm the economy, they do harm to jobs and it is important that we get those removed as soon as possible”.

Ahhh ok
I saw it reported earlier on a number of occasions. Including a video of a speech of hers at some stage, few weeks back though.
I took note given I have an offer of accom in Wanaka and we are behind the iron ore curtain here in Perth ;). Good to know that may have changed. Although it’ll still be us that holds out and doesn’t do flights, our eastern states mates shouldn’t miss out!

Found this video interesting this morning:

NZ jumped on it very early like Taiwan. Look what Sweden's herd mentality strategy got them though not as bad as the UK.

I think that Sweden knew what they were doing, even though that path was not a good one.
IMO, the UK NEVER knew what they were doing, and I don't think they do, even now...
