I went to NZ this year with my dad and my aunt. Between us we have plenty of snow, dirt and 4wd driving experience.

The roads are AWESOME and the driving is fun and definitely a "pro" for NZ skiing for me. And we only had a soft roader Rav4, with a diesel Prado it would have been so cool.

At the end of the day at Mt Hutt, lock the diff, put it in 1st and walk it down the hill without even having to touch the brakes, soak in the views, appreciate a well gritted and cambered corner, aah bliss.

I might even go so far as to say there's no such thing as bad roads, only bad drivers! I'll continue to sell NZ as a combined skiing/4wdriving holiday to friends who enjoy a good dirt road.

Mt Olympus access road. Not fun when you get a flat tyre on the way up.

I've heard good things about awakino, a trip up there in a legacy cost someone I know $2000...

Let's not forget the road into Skippers Canyon. Looks scarier than it really is.

No driving rental cars on that road. Insurance companies don't like it.

Yeah pretty much every rental car in NZ is driven like this. Either that or extremely slowly braking heavily into every single corner.

My first drive up Craigieburn was in 60cm of powder. That was pretty. Especially when we got there and only 16 people on the mountain for the whole day.

Yeah especially with new snow. The steep section just above the lower hut was treacherous last time I was there. 4wd's needed two sets of chains. Some young guys came within a hairs breath of toppling off the edge as their mums Prado with chains slid backwards down the road. If not for a touch of luck it was gone. Quite an interesting morning.

There was snow on the road from the bottom to the top when we went up. Not 60cm but was very glad we had 4wd.

How the 'clubbie' spirit in that shot. Love the old dozer, more rust than paint, but still charging avy prone slopes.

What do you think the animal tracks are 30m or so above dozer? Deer maybe?

I am still trying to recover from the anxiety of skiing Olympus. The clubbie's are great though. The guy operating the access rope tow from the "car park" correctly thought I looked unduly nervous and promptly gave me a glass of whiskey - you don't get service like that in most ski areas.

Don't need guard rails on flat roads? The objective on a mountain road is the same, stay on the road. They also complicate snow clearing and make it harder to three pount turn grit trucks.

Haha I wasn't being sarcastic...guardrails not required! That section is the connector between the main lower carpark and the buildings at Cheeseman, and to fit in the space on the ridge it's actually really steep above and below the hairpin. I had to use the brakes pretty heavily.

The locals there reckoned they originally wanted to build the road into Tarn Basin and site the original upper huts there...but they couldn't get a road in there with just a dozer. Hence the Mt Cheeseman ski club actually ending up one bowl further north, on Mt Cockayne. They got the same guy who built the Hutt road to build the upper Cheeseman road.

Similar stories abound for many NZ ski areas, supposedly Porters ended up in the wrong basin because the dozer driver got lost putting the road in.

Fun drive in a Fiat Punto rental last year. Less fun when you are driving solo, chains on, and you get a flat tire driving down on the upper 1/4 of the road.

I'm most uncomfortable with NZ access roads.

Was at Olympus recently. I was laughed at when, leaving Christchurch for Olympus, I mentioned that I was terrified of the road to Cheeseman.

Did the nevis in the wifes Xtrail the other weekend. Surprisingly it made it with only a slightly ****ed rear bumper cause i hooved it though a ford and a flat tyre which wasnt an issue till back out above garston. 8/10 will take my navara next time.
