Not sure where the numbers are coming from, but Metservice are predicting 27cm or Porters for Saturday? I se some snow but not that much.. http://www.metservice.com/skifields/porters
Looking pretty good this morning and its now visible on the rain radar. Looks like +20cm for Canterbury. Lets hope the wind dies down because it is really windy today. Mt Hutt and Porters closed. The following system on Monday looks better for queenstown/wanaka Nice day yesterday. I hiked up to Crystal :
Recent days have been nice in Queenstown, fairly mild and only dropped to about 2c last night. You can really notice the days getting longer. It's been great to be out working in the garden. An early spring might be on the cards.
I note it's quiet in here of late. With some of the other threads showing a few major storms over the next or for Aus alps, any comments from the experts on here for CP, Remarkables & Cardrona? Self interest as I'm there from 27 Aug on-wards for the week. Cheers in advance.
Hey guys, heading over tomorrow and noticed that some decent winds are forecast. What's the go with wind hold at remarks and coro? As in what speeds can they handle etc Cheers
Snowing hard ATM in the Canty fields, hoping for a good amount from this to keep the season going a bit longer . Been very wet in CHCH since lunchtime . Great fetch coming in under the banks peninsula so looking good
What looked to be lining up perfectly turned into not much as the winds swung SW and pushed the moisture back to the coast.....
It has been an exceptionally dry August in Queenstown, just 8 mm of rain (11% of normal). It really only feels like we've had 4 weeks of 'proper' winter this year, from mid-July to mid-August.
Been a very crap season here in Canterbury. Apart from a short 3 week period mid winter there has been very little snow. Big mama never did open at Porters. I see something on the way on the 7th. Possibly a nice topup for the south.
It took us 7 hours to drive to Temple Basin from christchurch yesterday and we had to drive 120kms of the 200kms with chains on @ about 50kms/h. The furthest I have ever driven with chains on. I was freakin out that they would break. Had to fit chains in Springfield and we got as far as Arthors Pass where the road was closed. They would not let us drive the last 4kms to the bottom of Temple. We then left the car and hiked from Authors Pass cafe to the lodge at Temple with 20kg packs w/snowboards. Snow was unreal. 40-60cm with 100cm drifts Splitfest 2016 is on at Temple this weekend.
I observe NZ looking pretty shit-hot from space (taken today) after last weeks dump... go.nasa.gov/2ct6w0z
Be a nice way to end things. Been a lean winter really. Below 1700 odd m the snowpack is disappearing rapidly, if it hasn't already.
There sure has been a marked contrast in the garden between this spring and last year. Growth this year has been amazing and I've only deployed frost fleece on the spuds once so far. That said, it looks like we're in for decent snow above about 1000m over the next few days.
Heavy wet snow has settled quite thickly at my place at Kawarau Falls overnight which is about 350asl. Turning back to rain now which is good since I really don't want a clearance and the subsequent frost.
Certainly a hefty fall of snow and quite the transformation from 2 days ago: Looks like some natural avalanche activity up Remarks:
Are any of the mountains opening for these conditions ? The mountains over there look amazing at the minute and I noticed the chairs are still on the lifts unlike Aus where they pretty much take them off the day after the season closes making it quite difficult to open even a couple of lifts if we have a fall like we did 2 days after the season closed.
Looks like Mt. Hutt had about 10-20cm today with possibly up to +50cm by the weekend out of the next storm
The NZ mountains won't open for the same reason Aus can't: all the staff have gone home. You need lifities, groomers, patrol, etc, etc, etc. Extending the season can only happen if there is a massive base in the lead up to close of season, and the decision will be made weeks before the official close date. Far too late now.
Metservice forecast Mt. Hutt +34cm tomorrow. So if it happens thats +50cm in last 4 days. Anyone know the easiest place to access the snow from Christchurch ? Porters maybe ?? Mt. Hutt site says road is closed after Zeds creek.
Tell me about it! My broadbeans are fruiting like made already and ive got some chillis to plant!! Luckly that snow didnt get me down here so i didnt have any damage besides a few broadbeans snapped in the wind. Another blast of snow over night. Should be a good weekend in the skintrack!
Mt. Hutt just got what looks like 30cm or so last 24 hours on top of 30cm or so last friday. Pics from the webcams this afternoon :
