Thought it was time to put up an observations thread for New Zealand as I am heading that way at the end of July.

It will be handy for anyone heading there soon as there is nothing natural on the ground at the moment. Please post anything that you see as relevant.

Noticed there was a little light stuff at Cardrona overnight but nothing exciting.

I observe $2,500+ missing from my bank account, rocks and grass at South Island resorts towards the end of June, and as a result, stress.

Well I'm here in Qtown for a few weeks on Uni holidays and it's all a bit disheartening at the moment. On Sunday afternoon we had a SE change come through Qtown but that barely resulted in a drop in temperature, and there was no precipitation associated. Pretty frustrating as I had family driving to Dunedin and Invercargill that night, and on both trips they experienced steady/heavy rain from about an hour out of Queenstown all the way to their destinations. Some of it reached the Crown Range however, as there was a dusting of fresh snow there yday, and like Fozzy observed that also reached Cardies. I haven't been in Qtown for very long this winter but it already feels out of the ordinary (an obvious observation admittedly). I usually find at this time of year that when there aren't snowfall events passing through, then the days are usually crisp if not pretty cold. At my place we will usually have some kinda hoar/permafrost type thing going on in the back yard too because it receives no sun at this time of year. But theres none of that currently, and as far as I can recall there have been more days with a maximum temperature in double figures than single figures since I've been here.

I drove the inland route from Otago to Canterbury and back yesterday and apart from a dusting on the Crown, Pisa and St Bathan's Ranges and, of course the main massifs of the Southern Alps (which always have snow) there was no snow anywhere. I stopped in Twizel for a coffee and was really surprised at how mild the temperature was.

From memory (which probably isn't that reliable), I can only recall about 5 frosts in the last month and a bit.

I'm heading over the same time as you Fozzy. Not so worried yet as things can change at the drop of a hat but i feel i may be packing the moutain bike instead of the snowboard if things continue this way hahah

Hopefully some of this weather that is currently hitting Tasmania will make its way across the Tasman and puke with snow.

I observe that's it's fkcuing warm at the moment.

Was just standing outside at 11pm in a t-shirt and mild breeze on me at 11.2C

Temperature got up to around 4C today and then around 6pm it started to rise.

Tele - wtf - I observe I'm in the gold coast, oz - we havehad 3 frosts where I am, I went for a run b4 work at 6:30 this morn, bins car windows and street signs icy, grass frost and the predicted low for Brisbane tonight is 5, gold coast 4! We crack well under zero where I am - near a creek about 6m amsl in a valley - and not classed as hinterland - and it's currently 6.7 degrees with , hang on I'll check, 39 percent humidity!
If we get cold enough, an the humidity stays down, we could crank snow guns here tonight with those figureS! last nights low was -1.0 lowest thus year last week -2.1
I observe so odd winter trends in nz IMO!

Ruapehu getting some love from the snow gods...this from the Dom-Post

Snow has started falling at Mt Ruapehu at last.

Ruapehu Alpine Lifts (RAL) marketing manager Mike Smith said snow began falling about mid afternoon today.

"It's pumping, there's about 6-7 centimetres on the ground at the carpark on the Whakapapa side of the mountain.

"We probably have 10-15cm on the upper slopes near Knoll Ridge and also over on the Giant."

Temperatures had dropped to 1 degree Celsius at Ohakune and snow was falling at Turoa skifield.

RAL management will meet tomorrow to decide whether to open the skifield as planned on Saturday.

Opening had been held over to July 2, when there looked to be no snow forecast.

If there was enough snow cover the field may open, Mr Smith said.

"We have four days of cold weather forecast and this should be good for decent snowmaking into next week.

Well, at least we have some white stuff coming down in NZ. It is a start.

You wont be standing outside in a T shirt tonight Tele. Just checked the temp in Qtn and it is 1 degree and going down to -5 tonight.

I think all snow guns were firing last night at were on for most of the day on the top half of the mountain.

Looking out the window, it appears all the guns are back on again this evening.

I'm going to stick my neck out and claim Coronet Peak will be the first place in NZ to open for skiing on June 30th.

Yet another system has totally bypassed Otago so we wait yet another week...meanwhile the (mostly) North Island based media go all out reporting on 'the icy polar bast' moving up the country which, I guess, just shows how mild this winter has been so far.

its been - degrees for a few days, doesnt that mean that they can at least crank their guns? or does it have to be the magical -6C to get them started??

Off topic sorry..but where did you get the -6C figure krayzie?
Depending on humidity some snow can be made up to +1-2 degrees is my understanding.

CP had the guns firing all night last night. Remarks have been making good snow too.
I take it you're referring to the temps in Queenstown krayzie? Bear in mind that inversion sometimes means that while it is below zero in the valleys the actually freezing level may not be low enough to allow snowmaking - we've had a lot of that this winter.

Well, my prediction was for the 30th. Might be bang on the money.

Was looking at the slopes through my binoculars and it looks like a pretty complete cover. Guess they want to get a little more down on the high traffic areas.

Quite cold last night, -5C at my place.

Certainly cold last night, if only that was the case up the slopes - I think there may have been an inversion going on overnight. There certainly is now; currently -0.2C at Qtown airport but apparently 4.8C at Coronet and 7.8C at Remarks

Bit of a nor-wester creeping in today. Temps will be mild tomorrow IMO, a sign the change is coming.
